EX1850 - Can I use another book if we've already done James?

Christine in TX wrote:My children are going through EX1850 Study on James right now and we won't be starting EX1850 until October. Can I just switch it out with another D4Y study? They are really loving these studies, as I am loving another Inductive Study Series from Arthur. Can we just pick a few and go through them or does it specifically coordinate with James?

You are memorizing the book of James in EX1850 but since you would have already completed the D4Y book I don't think that would be a problem. I would just choose another D4Y book. We are doing Joseph now and it's great!

Thanks Lori - that's what I was wondering. Since they will have already studied James, we'll just pick something else, but they can still memorize James - what a GREAT book to memorize!!!

EX1850 & 1850MOD - Exploring American History

Kim wrote:I used MFW for K,1, and Adv. I just love how Marie ties everything together with Science and History, classical and Charlotte Mason, and includes Nature Walks. We did not use MFW the past two years. I'm ready to talk about Am. History now that my ds will be 11.

I see that MFW uses STOW-3 in their Ex. to 1850 and this is very intriguing to me. I wanted to use STOW-3 as spine. How much is the Exploring American History book used in this year? I have a Catholic American History book that I would like to use instead since we are a Catholic Christian family. Would this be easy to substitute with a bit of tweaking on my part to align with the teachers manual? Or is Ex Am History used as a spine throughout the year and so it would be too much tweaking? Thoughts?

Kim

Exploring Am History is not a spine. SOTW and George Washington's World are used more. I would say the SOTW is the most used through out the year.

We are on week 26 and have to say that it's been a great year, the study of James has been intense but so very good and all three of mine have memorized James 1, 2, 3 and halfway through 4. We are just about to undertake the 6 week state research project, we started our Colorado field trips this last weekend and can't wait to get started on the rest.
God Bless,

Re: EX1850 & 1850MOD - Exploring American History

I've noticed that Ex Amer Hx is often used to fill out history. For instance, we're in 1850MOD and starting to learn about Abraham Lincoln & the Civil War. Story of the World covers that in one chapter, or two days' reading at the most -- not really any more coverage than a similar event might have in another part of the world.

EAH adds stories about Lincoln's childhood and just generally helps stretch the study into two weeks, so my son has time to really absorb this period in history (and to look through all those book basket books that we have :-) ). There are also readings from the Children's Encyclopedia & a read-aloud that we're about to begin, but my son has enjoyed the stories in EAH. Probably no book is perfect to me, but this one seems to be right on target for the age group and to contribute the fact that early Americans prayed & had faith.

That is to say that if you substitute it, consider a narrative focusing on American History as your other book choice.
