Re: Kingdom Tales - you could have warned me
My kids are always expecting me to cry through many stories in A Young Person's Guide to Knowing God , Patricia St. John has an amazing way of pouring out Truth in her modern day parables!! Whew! Also, Courage to Run ! Finished up the story of Harriet Tubman...It's so good that we can be so transpar...

Re: Assignment board? Good, bad or neutral??
I have the same idea. My kids each have a specific checklist to keep them on task when I am working with someone else. It helps them stay focused and take responsiblity for some of their work. They love it, and it has alleviated some power struggles because they do it in whatever order works for the...

2nd grader in need of phonics review
Just wondering what you have done if you found your 2nd grader in desparate need of a phonics review. Is SbSS enough review or did you go through another phonics program or redo 1st? My now first grader is reading okay. She still needs lots of help on some days, which I know is perfectly normal, bu...

Re: Costumes for RTR?
Dressed up for the Roman Feast, which consisted of many costumes because my kids had so many ideas to share what they learned with grandparents...gladiator fight, chariot races, naval battle, poetry reading and a reenactment of the death of Julius Caesar!!! Very entertaining!

Re: Which is better..."fun" stuff in morning or afternoon?
We flip flop...depends on an early bird starting school significantly before the others...that'll start the "independent" stuff first. Then other days we usually start with Bible at or right after breakfast and then the rest of reading/together things. We usually take a break at that point and then ...

Re: Question about Apologia Astronomy in RTR
I'd just like to share... We are just finishing our Astronomy in RTR (LOVED IT). Printed off notebook pages from the "extra's" at the apologia website for that book. They've worked as well as blank paper. BUT, that said, I have a child that will be motivated by using the apologia notebook. I've look...

I'm also a 4 school day family. I work outside the home as well once a week and it varies...it's worked ok over the years and I'm still learning to be flexible :) I just want to encourage you. My older kids do the reading of the day themselves and they catch me up "narration" :) before school the ne...

Re: sick days and more sick days
You're not alone getting behind. I'm sorry you're family is sick and can't shake it! We're in the middle of a move and I started a new job (what great timing huh), but it's the Lord's timing and I'm ok being creative/flexible with school and sometimes that means getting behind. In our transition we'...

Math Facts / Drill - More ideas!
I've started something new for math facts this year. My dd is copying a list each day for drill. After a few weeks she got a lot quicker pulling the facts out of her head and not using her fingers. She's 10 and we're working on multiplication. We've used flashcards. They practice alone for 15 minute...

Re: Thank you MFW staff
Just wanted to add my love for this curriculum and the relationships it builds in my family as we sit and discuss and make connections on a spiritual level as well as academic. Today my 11 y.o. had a "light-bulb" moment as we finished up reading Bronze Bow! Thank you MFW, and glory to God.

Re: Apologia Elementary Science
I am one who has used it on and off...honestly, we love the Flying Creatures book and I used it over THREE years! I did the MFW science, but found other times to fit it in... sometimes it was a day science wasn't scheduled... there was a time where my kids would listen and want to listen about the b...

Re: book baskets?
This may give you another idea about book basket. My kids may find a science experiment or craft project in one of their books and I'll let them do that for their "book basket" time that day...it doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes they just get so excited about a topic they just have to do s...

Usborne links...
I just wanted to say that my kids have really enjoyed the links in our Usborne books this year for RTR, history and science. Re: Two time lines?
I'm kinda like Dawn. The kids put their time line pieces in a fold out accordion style papers glued together as needed, in their history notebook, so we'll be continuing on their CTG with RTR this fall...Then I have one on the wall (actually it under a high counter top in the kitchen) that is just t...

Other years I scrapbooked, well I still have a year or two to finish - but I tell you I have a beautiful hardcover, bound yearboo...

Re: Teaching Life Skills
My kids each rotate being "dinner helper" They obviously help prepare, set table, serve, pray for the meal and get lot's of praise for the wonderful food. I've never seen my kids take such pride and care in something. This is a serious task...if we don't have a family dinner or order pizza or someth...

Re: Just purchased Creation to Greeks...some questions...
I'm finishing up CTG with a 1,3 and 4th graders. We read Children's Homer and my kids loved it. It fits well with the study of Ancient Greece. Pre-read this summer and then make your decision, you can skip parts that may seem too gruesome - which as I remember the part of the Cyclops eating some men...

Hang in there...it really pays off. I think going at the pace of your kids' needs is best. Re: chickening out on starting ECC this fall
I think ECC'll be a great year to do...in 8th grade he'll do it again at the advanced level, so whatever you get out of it next school year will be ok. I did it last year with a 2nd and 3rd grader (and a tag along Ker). We had a blast. Don't chicken out. I think you'll find the year to be a great tr...
