Re: My Fathers World Vs. Rod and Staff

Hi, I'm another who uses R+S for some of the 3 R's along w/ MFW. I really, really like the math! I tried several different ones and this gets the job done SO well. It works for my dc. I will NOT be switching again! I also use the spelling. I like that they use the words in context w/in the lessons s...

7-year-old - 1st for "2nd grade"?

First and Adventures Has anyone used MFW 1st for 2nd grade and Adventures for 3rd? I haven't started 1st with my 6 yr old ds yet because he was not ready for the Proverbs copywork yet. His reading is progressing, but slowly. I figured the Bible Reader would get too hard too fast if I started in Sep...

Re: Using CtG...in high school?

Thanks, Crystal. What you wrote out is more what I was thinking. Using Streams w/ its materials, not simply as CtG uses it. That's what I talked about by "beefing it up." I probably wasn't as clear either. ;) And, yes, as you talked about, it's more what will be easier for the family to adapt to mak...

Re: Extending MFW first grade into second grade

Don't worry about how it'll "line up." It's more important to do what she needs, particularly w/ reading. I am using 1rst at the moment w/ ds in 2nd (he's an older 2nd). He is needing the phonics review. I did this last yr w/ K when he hit a wall w/ silent 'e.' I think 1rst moves right along. For my...

Re: Disgruntled third grader :(

This sounds a lot like my oldest. He was at private school, then 1 yr of ps before coming home in 5th. He was here for 3 yrs, then went to the ps in 8th and 9th. He is back home now in 10th. It's been a loooong yr, and we are still working through things. It's been harder to do this time around. He ...

Re: Is it possible to use Adventures with a 4th grader?

well, I'm going to be the dissenting voice. I am using it this yr w/ ds in 2nd and dd in 4th. We haven't had a lot of solid history teaching and I wanted to keep them together. (I also wanted to keep to American history to give them a solid base about our country, not ready for ECC - which is on my ...

Re: MFW-K Planning questions and handwriting help

Another thought would be to use markers for him. They are a little easier to use than a pencil. Or, get one of the thicker pencils to use at first. (These are also harder for the tips to break. LOL) The writing of their letters wasn't too bad. It is generally just the upper and lower case, so not mu...

Spelling programs - what do you think?

For first grade I added another spelling and our daughter likes it alot. However it takes over 30 minutes for us. This is where "Spelling by Sound and Structure" comes in. I read it only takes 15 minutes a day and is easy to implement. Now I don't know which one to get for 2nd grade. What do you th...

Re: New to HSing: enough is enough?

I'm coming into this conversation a bit late, but I just wanted to reiterate what some of the other ladies have said and share some of my experiences. You can research until you're blue in the face, even later on. Trust me, I have failed at some things here at home because I kept trying to see what ...

Re: How do I?

LOL Did you keep reading the post and see how to combine them next yr as well? You could do it that way, but if you honestly feel the phonics/reading instruction in 1rst would not be as helpful for your younger dc, then you can always use a different phonics for that yr. Your older dc would be ready...

Couldn't you do the week that has the Battle and then skip the week that has Alfred?

Re: Kingdom Tales in ECC

We have only begun this book and I think it's fabulous! I too liked the Juggler's story - and that our differences are what make us special and can be used for wonderful things. I can't wait to continue on - thanks for the heads-up about the other stories, I will probably need to have tissues on han...

Re: Rosetta Stone too difficult for my 2nd grader -curriculu

Call me crazy, and this may go against some people's thoughts, but why don't you just drop it? If you still want to do something w/ her, then find some books at the library. I would look for the ones that have things labeled, and then use those terms in everyday life. She's still young and if she's ...

Re: Helpful book? And routines vs. schedules

MOTH did not fit well overall. My dc did not take well to a strict schedule and if we had to adjust it at all, they would get really upset, especially oldest ds. Also, when I didn't follow it to a 'T' then dh was upset w/ me. He thought I should be able to just start following it w/out an adjustment...

Re: What to do if chronically behind? *long*

It sounds like you are doing a great job! I have been "behind" from the get-go this yr. Financially we had to wait to order materials. I had started doing one thing w/ ds in 6th but it wasn't working like I thought it would, so turned around and ordered ECC upgrade, returning other materials. So, wh...

Time Line Help (1st)

We are getting ready to start the time line in 1st grade, and though I've done this before I need some help! I remember from when my oldest was in first that it ended up that we didn't have enough space in the first section. I know the spaces are to be the same length, but "how long" are they to be...

Re: Anyone switched from HOD to MFW????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had tried to use it but it didn't flow well for me. I looked at trying it again this yr but would have needed 3 programs, 1 w/ the extension. This would have been waaay to expensive. My dc were just not into all the finger plays and things either. As the pp mentioned, they do a lot of things drama...

I just wanted to share w/ you a way I made the raisins even living in a cool area and starting this in the fall. We put the grapes in a container on the window sill near the stove. Whenever I was going to use the oven, I would be sure to check out the progress of our grapes/raisins. Then when I was...
