Re: Bakery Field Trip??
I know that Krispy Kreme gives tours in our area. They also have a glass wall that allows you to see the donuts being made f you don't have the tour option. Would that work? I know they are not located everywhere, though. We did not have success with trying to schedule a newspaper tour. Our local ne...

Re: Work during reading?
I have let my kids color history pages before, too. Building with legos and lincoln logs is good for longer reads, too. I do make it a habit to stop during the reading to ask questions. That way I know if they are continuing to listen and I am not just reading to myself.

Re: CTG: English FTRU - second grader?
So my second grade boy is tripping up on the vocabulary. He has been ok with the amount of writing, but this assignment tips the scale. He is reading and writing, but still has to work at it. He is not reading smoothly, yet, but is improving now that we changed his glasses. Today we started big Sis...

spelling power
I'm about to start Spelling Power for the first year. What method works best for you: 1. using the student booklet provided by the company 2. printing off the pages from CD 3. using just a plain notebook We have used a spiral-bound notebook for the past three years and have been pleased. Re: When to start K?
I started my son (Oct. 12th bday) at 4yo because he was wanting to "do school" like his big sister. He had done well with the preschool package and showed strengths already in math-related stuff. Like Crystal and MFW said, I didn't push when we got to harder things. For him, handwriting was harder (...

Re: Any Roman recipes??
I do not have any recipes to share, just some ideas of what we did for our Roman Feast. Maybe the food that we chose would spark some ideas? We served olives, halved brussel sprouts sauteed with a little garlic, salt, and olive oil, boiled eggs, boiled artichokes with butter to dip, a chicken dresse...

Re: Help me understand this history cycle
I just wanted to reassure you that countries/topics will be revisited in later years. We are in Rome to Reformation and this week are learning about Ancient China and Japan. There is a recipe included at the end of our week for stir-fried rice. (Am I the only one that gets hungry before breakfast wh...

Hi Tammie, I don't have specific answers to your questions but just wanted to add that I am using ICDAT for my ds (2nd) instead of GHA in RtoR. I found that it is going well working through the begininning lessons, A-Z. We do it whenever GHA is scheduled (x2 a week). My daughter had only completed t...

Re: FAVE Egypt movies for C to G?
We enjoyed "Building the Great Pyramid", a BBC video (It has Jonathan Stamp as the director, I think?). It really shows the effort, science and resources it took to construct the huge structures. I don't remember any heavy religious themes but I did watch it a year ago. You may want to preview it fi...

Re: Drawing with children seems to be for older children...
I agree with what Crystal posted. I used it with both of my kids in 1st and thought that it gave them a good foundation in drawing. I think kids sometimes get overwhelmed with trying to draw because they "know" how they want something to look but can't make it translate on to paper. DWC helps to giv...

I am sorry you are having a rough day. ((hugs)) I am praying for you, your kids, advice that will be given. All I can offer is that our family sometimes just stops what we are doing and prays about those type of days. Maybe others will have some help and/or links on scheduling with the little ones a...

Re: Library books - frustration
This is one reason we like to start school a few weeks before everyone else does. That way, if there is another family that is on the same topic/week, we will not have a problem finding books and getting them back for someone else to use.

Combining 1st grade & Creation to Greeks
I have a first grader and 4th grader this year. In looking ahead I see some of the same material covered in both the 1st grade and CtoG programs but at different times of the year. For example, Timeline (both beginning with Adam and Eve) starts on day 1 in CtoG but on day 38 in 1st grade; mapping B...

Making the First Day Special
I'm looking for ideas to make the first day of school a little more special. Like taking a picture of each child, making a special "schoolish" snack (pencil cookies or something), etc. Any ideas? In the past we've had back to school parties where the kids pick a favorite meal and we go through thei...

Re: Summer school ideas
IMHO, one of the very best (and most enjoyable things) you can do educationally is to READ. Read books of all kinds together. Get lost in books. Your MFW guide will have a terrific list for your upcoming year of study. I totally agree with this, especially during the summer! A helpful resource that...

Re: Letter writing in ECC - Who?
We have a missionary family we support through our church that we write sometimes. They have children our kids' ages, so that helps to make it fun for everyone involved. Sometimes we do use the time to go back to something we did in PLL (like when it says to write your own ending to a story or write...

Hi Angel, I am currently going through MFWK with my second child and thought I could add a few words of encouragement with using the program. Thinking of coming back to MFW
I used MFW for my girls (7years old & 8 years old) in Kindergarten and first grade. I switched over in second grade to a textbook program, which seems like it's just to much to learn in a year-plus expensive. My son (5 years old) starts kindergarten this year and I am definatly going to use MFW wit...

For adventures, week 31, there is a recipe to make honey peanut butter balls. Does the recipe mean to use cocoa (unsweetened) or cocoa you use to make hot chocolate? Wasn't sure. Thanks! Re: ? adventures magnet set
Just to add... The lessons are scheduled in the TM, but most are just listed as card numbers to do for the day. The cards that come with the kit are what actually have the lessons on them. The TM just adds info/clarification to some of the lessons. As an alternative, did your set come with specific ...

We went last summer with dd5 and ds2. They enjoyed the life size model of the ark, the fish tank, the shows and the dinosaurs. It brought to life and reinforced what we have learned through the Bible. We (parents) enjoyed the Biblically-based, factual information that we could read and explain to th...
