CTG Recipe Help!

I'm curious what others did for an Egyptian meal?? Thinking fish, pita bread....We haven't done anything huge up to this point, I was sick for two of the Jewish festivals so we skipped them (catch them next time around) and I would like to do something fun for the kids. Thanks!! :) Hi Andrea, We ar...

Re: Science in the Beginning question

Thanks so much ladies! My kiddos LOVE science and are used to doing it 4 days a week, so doing it 3 days should not be an issue. Thanks again! :-)

Re: Question about 1850-Mod vs Adventures

I thought I would chime in since this is where I am at this year. :-) I have an 8th grader, 5th grader, and a 2nd grader. I was planning on doing 1850 to modern and Adventures until I talked at length to someone at the MFW booth at a convention. She persuaded me that I would be very overwhelmed tryi...

Re: rosetta stone on my iMac question...

Hi, I'll chime in since we had the same issues. I, too, did not want to deal with tech support. I had the same issue with the USB mic, but when I switched it to the built-in mic, it worked. If your mac has that, I would try that. One other issue we had was that RS would not recognize my son's voice ...

Re: OT: Reading for Junior High Boys

Anna, you bring up some very valid points, because my son can also be very picky about what he reads. I think that may be part of the problem along with his high reading level. He has read so many of the classics for his age, C.S. Lewis, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Newberry Award winners that...

Re: Apologia Physical Science Coop?

Hi, I paid $25 for the year which included all lab supplies, photocopies, and a binder. The teacher's then provided all the supplies from the "fund". There were some labs that my son had to do at home that were not conducive to a classroom, but I didn't need anything extra for them. I should clarify...

Re: Apologia Physical Science Coop?

I thought I would chime in also...hope this helps to answer your questions. This past year my 7th grade ds took an Apologia General Science class at a co-op. It met once a week for a total of 32 weeks. There were breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter, and spring. All the reading, OYO questions,...

Re: Mega Field Trip to D.C.

Hi, We went on this free walking tour of the monuments in D.C. a couple of years ago and loved it! The guides are very informative and you gain historical knowledge of the city that is not found in most history books...and all they ask for is a small donation! It was my kids favorite thing we did th...

Readers (esp. for CTG)

Does anyone have any great books they could recommend for a 4th grader, reading at or slightly above grade level? If there are such books out there that would go along with CTG, that would be great, but I will take any recommendations! Hi, We just finished CtG this year. I had done some extensive r...

Re: EFTRU, Logos, question

Hi Crystal, I love words so this piqued my interest and we will be on this word in a few weeks. Like you, I did not come up with much in my research, but thinking out loud here... Could it because legends are told stories (thus involving words) that are passed down orally? That was my first inclinat...

MFW Reading with Older DC (Multiples)

I chose to get on Christian Book Distributors and search for historical fiction books that had to do with what we were studying in CtG this year. I came up with the following for my 5th grader. I use them for independent reading time and use the book basket books as read alouds. So far he has enjoye...

EFRU - Help with specific words / possible errors

Error Correction - Sauros Hi, At this moment, we are trying to do our "sauros" vocabulary card. My oldest son is questioning the EFTRU book and I tend to agree with him. The greek root stego does mean roof, but they have the meaning of stegosaurus as a lizard with a shell on his back. They have the...

Re: Lifesize wigwam

Not sure if this will be of help to you, because it ends up looking more like a teepee, but when we did Adventures two years ago, my boys gathered very long sticks from the woods and we leaned them up against a huge tree trunk. We got several large blankets out of the closet and wrapped them careful...

Russia permafrost idea

We are on our first week of Russia and my oldest ds did not like the idea of putting soil over jello. So I found another idea in one of Janice Van Cleave's science books using crushed Oreo cookies for the soil and vanilla ice cream for the snow. You let the ice cream melt through the Oreos and the J...

EX1850 - Squanto details vary in different resources

Hi, I just wanted to mention something that my son and I noticed today while doing our unit on the Pilgrims. In Exploring American History, page 54-55, it says, "He had been stolen by some sailors and carried to England...". While reading our read-aloud (Squanto), we could find nothing that said Squ...

My now 8 yr old ds also had issues with handwriting. I believe it is just taking him longer to get the fine motor processes down. I had him do his handwriting on graph paper. It comes in squares of all sizes. It worked much better for us because he had trouble with the dashed lines in regular manusc...

Just a thought...another things you might try is playing Simon Says using left and right, i.e. "Simon says raise your left foot..." and playing the "Hokie Pokie". Both os these helped my ds when he was in preschool.

I think consistency is the key to chores, as above, having set chores for each child and doing them at the same time or the same day. I had to laugh at the topic of this thread, bc just this morning I overheard my two ds discussing that it was laundry day and how they were going to sort the laundry....

Thanks everyone, your insights have been very helpful! I tend to be one of those moms who can overdo. I have to constantly pray that I do not push my kids farther than they are able. My ds is quite gifted in math, but each child is different and I cannot expect my other ds to be the same. That is wh...
