Re: Beefing up Adventures
OK that definitely helps. I didn't realize there was so much world history alongside the American history there. Thanks so much.

Re: Cardstock foldable timeline ?
For 1st grade, I colored and laminated each piece and used velcro on a tri-fold presentation board. The kiddos never looked at it! This year for CTG, I took a plastic page protector and cut off all but an inch long-ways, so I was left with the 3-hole part plus an inch of clear plastic (two layers). ...

Re: New homeschooler needs encouragement
I am certain that if you sat in the public school with a stopwatch and timed the number of minutes that each child is engaged in actual learning as opposed to waiting on the other kids, transitional times, busy work, etc. you would be surprised. I firmly believe that 2 hours of solid learning at hom...

66 books
When I was looking over my 1st grade TM, I noticed that one of the upcoming days includes a brief mention of the 66 books of the Bible. My two littles are tagging along and I thought it would be fun to have something extra for them to do (nothing highly involved here). I am looking for something to...

Anyone going to run 3 programs at once?
I am looking at having a dd in AHL, middle 2 children in CTG, and youngest in K. How doable is this without going crazy? Well your high school student would be mostly independent, so you shouldn't have a problem. I have 2 in CTG and 1 in K this year also. You may want to start your oldest a week or...

ECC/ Hero Tales question
We just started doing Hero Tales yesterday. Today we had to write the character trait down and file it under the Bible section of our notebook. My question is... Are we only supposed to write the character trait name down? Or do we also write out a definition? The manual said it's multi- purposeful...

I don't have a high school student at the moment, but I DO own that book. I agree there are some things that are even difficult for an adult to understand at times! I think it's a great idea to read it aloud or together, especially so you can discuss the information!

God's World News?
How do you use it in your family? We just got our first issues and I've read through them (5th, 2nd and prek) and really like them! Do you just give it to then to read on their own? Do you read it with them? Do you have the kids compare the info they've learned in their own respective issues? Just ...

Re: Quick & Easy Lunch Ideas
We also do the "cheese roll-ups" when we're low on groceries. If I have refried beans on hand, I will add that on them. PB&J with fruit, canned soup, leftovers (especially spaghetti). They love "buttered noodles" as someone else mentioned. Right now my kids make their own lunch (well, the older 7yo ...

Re: White Board or Chalk Board or None at all?
I recommend white boards in whatever size you will use. We have a 4'x8' one on our schoolroom wall that we use for different things (calendar, demonstrations, just fun drawing time) and some personal-size ones that have handwriting lines on them for practicing writers. I also have smaller one I use ...

Re: Butterfly Garden Question
Thanks to the poster who pointed out that sometimes these experiments can end up being sad :( When we did the butterflies, my then 4-going on 5-year old was extremely sensitive. EFTRU in CtG
Are all the Greek roots used from EFTRU? I don't feel like taking the time to go through the manual and count ;) Edited to add: Well, I guess I'm impatient. I decided to count. There are 37 Greek roots in EFTRU and they are all used in CtG. Some of the weeks double up and do 2 words instead of just ...

This will be our first year using MFW, and I'm very excited! It really seems like the curriculum will fit our needs. We're going to begin Adventures in August with my 3rd grader and use the preschool package with my 3 1/2 year old (and possibly a 2 y/o and 3 y/o I may be babysitting). Do I order ex...

Re: teaching 2nd and 1st (and preschooler and toddler)?
My children were those ages 2 years ago and we did Adventures. My 5yo tagged along with most everthing. For her math we used MFW 1st (since we already had it) and for language we ended up using Rod & Staff. So I guess that doesn't answer your question, but that's how we did it.

We just go down the list also but some days either they or I am DONE at a certain point in the day and the rest gets pushed off to the next day and catch up on Friday or sometimes it just gets skipped. We do our History or Geography first so we don't get off track with that.

Re: 34 wks?!
It bugs me when curriculums schedule 180 days. We are required 180 days, so if you do the whole curriculum, you've got no days for field trips and stuff like that. I am amazed at people who are trying to figure out how to fill the extra days - I am always trying to pare down the work to 160 or 170 w...
