Re: Struggling with mythology......

One thing that's great to do when reading Greek mythology is to relate back to the Bible. This is the climate and culture that Paul was preaching too--the Greeks! These were their beliefs! Understanding this helps make sense of the Bible. In Act 14:12, the people call Barnabas 'Zeus' and Paul 'Herme...

Re: High School & "Higher Level Thinking"

Thanks Bret. Someone on another forum said there wasn't much in the way of literary analysis (but of course one person's "not much" is another's "too much," so I had to ask!) So that made me wonder if things like theme and literary devices etc... are covered. I'm not one to want to totally pick apar...

Re: Not really liking Writing Strand

Here's a post I wrote out about how we approached Writing Strands lessons: https://board.mfwbooks.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1088#p52230 I didn't realize the author had passed away! I'm all sad now! Thank you for submitting your conference tape. I listened to that this past fall, and wondered why the...

Re: Not really liking Writing Strand

We haven't been using WS very long, so maybe I just need to keep plowing for a time. Neither of my two have had much for definite instruction with writing but both of them can come up with amazing stories. Honestly, this is very age appropriate for 10 & 11 yo's. I think sometimes we underestimate j...

Re: High School Optional Reading

Thank you both! That's what I was hoping, but wasn't sure if my understanding was correct--glad there is some time set aside--I was thinking it would be nice to mix some easier historical fiction in with the more meaty titles, and I'm so glad there are some suggestions as to what time period to use ...

Re: High School & "Higher Level Thinking"

Merry, Was this the thread you read? Or would this thread be helpful? http://board.mfwbooks.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10164 Yes, that was the thread :-). I was more interested in hearing how MFW facilitates that thinking vs. how I would evaluate whether it's happening. Same topic, different twist ;) ...

Re: Frustrated with spelling - Related question

Can I ask a related question about spelling? My understanding was that spelling has everything to do with phonics. In other words, children who can really hear the phonics sounds, or learn them through practice, have an easier time spelling. For those with more experience than I, is this true? My o...
