Re: Apologia Online science classes-anyone tried them?

We have used several Virtual Homeschool Group AYOP (at your own pace) classes and found them handy for review and reinforcement. My daughter used them for Advanced biology, and we have used them for General and Physical sciences. Donations are now closed, but if you volunteer to teach you might stil...

Re: Rosetta Stone for Highschool Question

The biggest issue is if your kid will play NCAA sports at a Division 1 or 2 school. If that is the case, you *must* have a spine (there is a whole approval process students must go through, and experience from other homeschoolers say, you have to have some kind of book for each class). The NCAA will...

Re: Rosetta Stone for Highschool Question

So, NCAA will not accept just Rosetta Stone for high school. Colleges might or might not. NCAA want to see a textbook or workbook, and then Rosetta Stone as a supplemental. We had so much trouble with Rosetta Stone we went to a co-op for Spanish and then supplemented with DuoLingo. I know other moms...

Re: What are your plans for 2018-2019?

My oldest is graduated (I actually graduated her last December), and started at the local university in January. She will continue there this fall. She got a 4.0 her first semester (12 credits), and between that, dual enrollment the previous semester (7 credits), and CLEP tests, she starts the fall ...

You go back and repeat Exploring Countries and Cultures, adding in the 7th/8th grade supplement for the 8th grader. The 6th grader would then do CTG and RTR the next two years after that.

Agree! Start the Ancient History and Literature program. Explorers to 1850 and 1850 to Modern Times are not high school level, and you would have to do a lot of work to beef them up.

Re: What do you do with twins?

I have twins... Do math and the teaching of reading separately. Try to do games and fun hands on together. I kept mine together for a little bit, but then I realized one was probably dyslexic, and would get discouraged by his brother "getting" things faster. Sometimes it is a motivator, but usually ...

Re: Using High School level for an Advanced Middle Schooler

I would not do AHL with a 7th grader. There is a maturity level needed for the topics covered. I would have her do CTG, but do the extra projects in the front of the chapters of Streams of Civilization, and make sure she is doing the book basket books. Maybe add a progeny press guide or two for a co...

Hey Grace, I don't know anything about homeschooling in South Carolina, but a friend of mine did some research just in case they moved there. She said to check out: http://www.tschaa.com/faqs.html and https://thirdoptionhomeschooling.blogspot.com/2016/09/following-third-option-law.html Maybe one of ...

You will be fine doing MFW 1st, after Abeka K. It will feel a lot easier, but that's fine. MFW is meant to be "gentle."

Re: New School Year Hopes and Dreams

I began homeschooling because my daughter had a medical issue and she would need to go to the bathroom every 2 hours. I figured I'd have to teach her what she missed, anyway, so why not homeschool (and I had plenty of friends who homeschooled). Anyway, by the time she was halfway through 3rd grade, ...

Rhonda, Sounds like you may have a mixed set of lesson plans and Notgrass books. The current TOC for the current Notgrass book is here: https://history.notgrass.com/content/in_their_words.pdf From that, the Watchman is written by LM Montgomery... It's in a couple of places... https://www.poemhunter....

homeschool buyer's co op does offer just the Julius Caesar video. It's about 12 dollars. It's just below the group of 5. click to open each individual title.

Hope that helps!

Re: Help, switching from Abeka/BJU to MFW

Just to encourage you, we switched from Abeka to MFW when my oldest was in 3rd. It does take a bit of getting used to that doing notebook pages is more learning efficient than worksheets. My daughter is now a 12th grader, and taking classes at the community college this fall and will graduate in Dec...

Re: Help, switching from Abeka/BJU to MFW

It is great that your son has covered those first two weeks before! That will come in handy. In ECC, it takes most people until about week 5 to find your "groove" - where you find your rhythm of your subjects. First, are you utilizing the book basket? Several of the recommended books have extra hand...

Re: Questions on writing curriculum

So, my oldest started MFW in 3rd grade. We did Writing Strands starting in 4th. We took a detour in 7th and 8th and did Essentials in Writing (she is dyslexic, and needed more step-by-step explanation). Then we did MFW for 9-11th. This summer she passed her College Composition CLEP - which included ...

Re: Try a New Schedule for 2017-2018

This would be fine, if we didn't have co-op that has deadlines. I find that I'd rather add in "catch-up" weeks when we need them. We know we take 1 week at Thanksgiving, and 2 weeks at Christmas. We generally don't take a Spring break, but we try to take an early family summer trip in early May. The...
