Re: 6th grade math - Finish Singapore? Start Saxon?
I also would go with Singapore, but I did need those guides in 6A and 6B (just using them when we were stuck).

I just wanted to let you know what happened at our house one year. I had always done the Explode the Code primers with my 4 year olds. Well, for some reason, they just didn't get accomplished with child number 5 at that time. I just promised myself I would do better the next year. The next year we d...

Photocopy the entire book??? (I Can Do All Things)
Hi! I just received Adventures in the mail. I did order an extra pack of paint cards. Now that I have the book, I see that if it's to be used with more than one child, I will need to photocopy the entire book! I'm thankful to not have to pay for an extra book, but that sure is a lot of photocopying...

Re: GA Henty for elementary vs. high school
Henty's books do tend to start out slowly. This was a comment from both of my boys even though they do enjoy his books. My boys both read this book on their own while doing Creation to the Greeks, but they would have been 10 and 12. I would not have tried it with my youngers.

MFW not heavily used in older grades?
I've been skimming and deep diving on your board and am intrigued with MFW. My perception is that it is heavily used up to 4th, perhaps 5th 'grade' but not heavily used after that. Is this near correct? Posted: Sun Jun 29, 2008 5:56 pm I found MFW when my oldest where a little older, so I have prim...

2-year-old, K, & Adventures
I will be doing Adv with my two dds ages 8 and 7. I will be doing K with my 5yo ds and I would like to include him in the bible, science and history in Adv. I also have a two year old ds. I feel the need to add that my sons do not play well together unsupervised. If I try to send them off to play t...

Re: How long, realistically?
We are using Tom Sawyer. We did not read the book through before starting. I split each reading assignment over two days. In our book it is 5 chapters. Then the boys do 2-3 pages a day out of the guide. It takes about 5 days to do the 5 chapters and their corresponding questions that way. I agree wi...

My oldest is in 9th. We are doing Algebra 2 this year. (We skipped Geometry to solidify Algebra and will do it next year. He is young enough this schedule will not affect testing.) We use a different math program, but I watch all the video presentations with my oldest and do the practice problems (5...

I didn't realize it was to replace the daily testing with your student. I thought it was somehow for reinforcement. I am using it the way I chose to. I do not think the intent was to replace daily testing. That is just how it has worked out at our house for the older children. We often do not use c...

YES!!! You get a break since you have seven kids. :) A couple of questions... do you use the tutor for 2nd grade and up? And do you use this exclusively (iow, no more calling out spelling lists for every kid, every day -- just one time per kid, over the weekend, you record it into the program -- ri...

How do you use SP digital tutor?
I am doing SP with my oldest son. I was wondering how you used the digital tutor in the SP process. Also, do you have to have a microphone for it to work? I love this, although there have been a couple of glitches. I could not get it to work consistently with Vista. The problem was solved (as their...

I may be the disagreeing voice here, but I am not sure he cares to use the orange crayon, only not to use the white crayon because that is what he was instructed to do. I have a little girl in particular that would like to be in charge of every detail. I am not against giving him a choice of colors,...

I have several to teach too. It can be a challenge. We did year 4 last year. Although it was probably my favorite book, I did have my oldest two read City on a Hill independently, and I discussed it with them later. I agree that there is some repetition between the books. I did start pre-reading a l...

Compare writing assignments
Posted: Mon Jul 07, 2008 5:06 pm I have taught with and still use a workbook here and there. However, at the first grade level, the primary focus of the language book we used is to write a sentence, starting it with a capital and ending it with the correct end mark--. ? or ! Seriously. You can easi...

Posted: Mon Apr 07, 2008 11:35 am Rosetta Stone wins hands down to anything we have tried at our house. We can actually put together Spanish sentences, and read quite a bit of it. We tried Power Glide and Speedy Spanish without success. The kids even enjoy it! The handbook does have some grammar in...

Posted: Mon Mar 31, 2008 10:26 pm We are memorizing the book of James this year. That is NOT a "light" undertaking. We have finished chapters 1-3 (2 more to go!). We have used K, 1st, CTG, RTR, Exp. to 1850, and have 1850-Mod. Times ordered for next year. Clearly, I think it is a great program. Whe...

Re: Latin & Greek Roots, plus Latin?
Posted: Tue Mar 11, 2008 9:30 pm Well, we started this year with a 4th, a 6th, and an 8th grader. We are having good luck with Latina Christiana. We use Rosetta Stone for Spanish. Since it is only my goal to complete Latina Christiana by 9th grade, in the future I think I will start them around fou...

Re: I truly want to do something just for them
Posted: Wed Mar 05, 2008 3:33 pm I think sometimes our children miss out more when we try to do too much. If you are only doing CTG, you will be rested enough to read another book to the youngers or wrap them up in toilet paper as mummies (not scheduled, but it was a big hit at our house!). One pro...
