Extending MFW first grade into second grade

We have been using MFW 1 reading along with another curriculum for our older first grader. When my dd completed the other curriculum several weeks ago we rolled into all of MFW 1 completely. It is so delightful and a really great fit! I'm really enjoying every aspect of it - especially the hands on...

Re: Hi! Newbie here!

FWIW, I enjoyed the Great Animal search, lol. It is very interesting.

A 7th grader would likely think it was benath him, if made into a school assignment. But just leave it sitting out somewhere, and they will probably be all over it. :-)

Re: advanced reader and questions for second grade 2nd

I've done Adventures and based on what you said, it would work great for your daughter! Rmember that the guidelines that are mentioned are the MINiMUM that they need to be able to do. So, where lesser advanced students would only write 1-2 sentences about a topic, your dd could write 4-5(or whatever...

Re: singapore math question

My daughter may have been able to test into 1b, but I just decided to go with 1a. I am VERY glad we did. It gave her a chance to get started with Singapore in a non stressful way. Once we hit 1b, it was a lot harder. We are now in 2a. It is going much smoother than it would have if we started in 1b....

Some people like to expand on the topics covered. Crystal gave you lots of ideas for that. The sky is the limit for that! If you are like me, and like it spelled out for you.... I actually added in a seperate science book. Not to replace the other, my kids just LOVED science and the books included j...

Re: I Can Do All Things with 2 children?

I got a 2nd book and am very glad I did. That will allow each of them to have their own keepsake, rather than random papers, that will get thrown away.

I found the DVD's to be helpful.

No, it is not a lot to copy each week, but it does ends up being most of the whole book.

I Keep Coming Back Here So Why Can't I ...?

Have you always used MFW? Did you switch from a different curriculum to MFW? I think one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back here besides that it is Biblically based and because it is all planned out. But I think that is also what scares me about it too. With my current curriculum I have so m...

Finish Adv. or move on to ECC?

I am not sure if we will finish Adventures by the time our school year ends. I was wondering if I should try and finish it or just stop we are at the end of the year and move on to ECC. I saw a post not long ago about someone thinking of going two years with Adv., that is not what I want to do. Jus...

Re: 2nd grader tag-along with Exploring Countries and Cultur

I would definitely have a 2nd grader tag along ECC. My oldest is just in 3rd, and ECC is going great. #2 is only 11 months younger, so 2nd grade age. She tags along for everything except some of the writing aspects, and it is going very well. I go over everything with her verbally. She is learning n...

Re: Grade level rambling...

That is pretty much my way of thinking, Crystal. Just one difference that I didn't mention. My oldest would actually be in 2nd grade, based on her birthday. So, starting our school year on Jan, I techinically have her 1/2 a year ahead. I'm thinking with my 2nd, I would consider her what she actually...

Adventures Tag-Along What to Order? And other stuff

If you did/are doing Adventures with a kiddo the recommended age (2nd-ish) and have a Kindy (or youngster) tagging along, what did you buy for the kindy? How much do you push your K student?

I'm not sure how much I should push my 5 year old - part of me has heard enough to know that she is still young and let her be young for now. So I really haven't made her do too much. Yes, like Crystal said. To be a little more specific, the top column has an A and then a picture of a cat and a picture of a man. I never cut cut them into cards. I preferred to just use the whole page and let her point to the picture as we sang. Thank you! I did find them! I see it does say to cut ...

ECC Day 2 - Orange alternative

I just wanted to share what I did in place of drawing the continents on an orange and quartering that to show the distortions of going from a globe to a map. 5 students in 2nd -8th grade? That sounds PERFECT for doing ECC. You have to only use 1 program for all of them. I am expecting my 6th, but they are still on the young side, so I am not quite where you are at. I have calculated that I will always have to do at least 2 programs every single year. Som...

I love this idea!

Maybe I will just cover the cards and slip them into another page protector like a big envelope. THen the whole thing can be left in the notebook, and pulled out as needed.

Re: Question about independent reading...

My almost 8 year old does most of her reading to herself, too. I have her read to me sometimes, just to see how she is doing. If the material is important to learn, I quiz her and would have her read again if needed, but it usually isn't. I still read much of the school stuff outloud to them.
