Re: after cycle then what?

Thanks guys. ECC was my favorite year anyway! I wouldn't mind doing it again. With only 2 kids, I don't have anymore to join the cycle so I wasn't sure. But she was only in 2nd grade when we did it last time. I don't remember anything about 2nd grade. Well, I remember a few things: I won a coloring ...

Re: 2nd grader tag-along with Exploring Countries and Cultur

We did this last year! I had a 4th and 2nd. There was one geography workbook that said 5th grade and up (or was it 6th?) But I didn't do it with either of my kids. My 2nd grader loved the Book of Animals. In fact, we still are using pages out of it for THIS year in 3rd grade. Properties of Ecosystem...

Route of the Exodus

Ok...I am supposed to have my kids draw the route of the exodus. However, Victor p. 79 doesn't show them crossing the Red Sea. I know that no one is 100% sure and all that really matters is that they did it...right? LOL But, I just wanted to show the kids that they did go across it. I googled and fo...

Ok...here are the sites I love. www.bigiqkids.com (just do the free math part) You set the parameters of their drill. Then they get "coins" to play a game afterwards. www.uptoten.com (this haseducational games for kids up to ten years old) www.dancemattyping.com (free keyboarding program for kids 7-...

Great Website!!

I found the coolest website today. You may already know all about it. It is http://www.bigiqkids.com They have free programs and then an upgrade for $10 a year. You can use the free without having to give any info at all. If you are in Adventures...they have a cool US MAP drill. They also have a spe...

Re: Children, allowance & chores, oh my!

I think it is one of Lisa Whelchel's books that you can pay your kid for dilegence. They had to do the chores regardless but if they were done by 10am (you pick time), then they got paid for their dilegence. So in other words, you can go them now and get paid or do them later and not. I know mfw is ...

Re: spelling power - talk me through it please!

I got mine in the mail yesterday. Sat in front of the TV with a pop tart this morning watching this so called quick start DVD. I only figured out how to do the placement tests. : ) I did do that successfully. I was going to have to watch and read more to find out the rest. Thanks for this post!!!!!!...

Re: Herding cats.... Thats my life!

Girl I sympathize! I went to put the towels from the washer to the dryer and turned around and they were up! "I'm finished" they would say. So I decided to put a book beside them and said "If you get done and Mama is not here....read this book until I get back." Sometimes a little busy work wouldn't...

Re: Traditions!

We always have a breakfast out with "daddy" at McDonalds. He gives them the 'Please be good this year and listen to Mama" speech. Oh, and your triplets will love this.....put on their backpacks and send them out the back door, kissing them and telling them to have a good day. They then walk around t...

Re: Need some encouragement. My child is not enjoying school

My dd is a late summer baby so I didn't start her in kindergarten (public school gasp!) until she was 6 but it made all the difference in the world. Also, is your dd very small? My cousin was a very small child and his doctor told my aunt that his fingers didn't even have the stength/abilty to hold ...

Re: Library Routine

My girls (8 and 11) have their own library bags. I have my own. I get a few book basket things and let them pick out some on the same topic plus one that they just want to read. It is easier for us to keep up with 5 each than me to keep up with 15. I have paid a few overdue fines but not many. Pick ...

Re: How do you keep up on school and house work??

Love reading this thread! I did learn a few things from purchasing chore packs. 1) You can't expect what you don't INSPECT. Take 2 seconds to make sure they did their room correctly. When they know you are coming...the do so much better. 2) Outline on paper (cliped to them in case of chore packs) wh...

I guess I use it more like a buffet and pick and choose.

Re: Not convinced ECC is the right choice for 2011

I haven't read any of the responses since I am supposed to be leaving for church right now. But...I just did it with a 7 year old and a 10 year old. POE went over her (7 yr) head so we basically just used the Usborne book for her. (She got some of POE but not a lot of the terms) I didn't do any of t...

Re: Teaching an only child?

God had an only child, too! God didn't need more because one fulfilled HIS purpose. Maybe your dd will need more quality time, one on one, to fulfill His purpose, too. You never know what is in store for you or your DD down the road. I am married to an only child who is quite happy he is the only ch...

Re: Extras for Adventures?

We made the most awesome notebooking pages using www.homeschoolshare.com It is free! I would search whatever we were doing at the time and find great lapbooks that someone has done for you! I wouldn't do the whole lapbook but would pull a page or two out of it. We found a wagon that had all the part...

Re: Changing from HOD to MFW??? Anybody???

I loved ECC more than even Adventures. It is so easy to tailor to each kid. For the geography game, just have the younger ones learn 5-10 countries per continent. Properties of Ecosystems was tough for my 2nd grader so we just basically stuck to the Usborne book that comes with it and I bought the o...

Re: Thoughts on Mr. Hazell's Workshops

You should really have her take an aptitude test. I think all kids in highschool should be made to take one. 80% of people end up doing something other than in their field. My DH for example majored in wildlife biology but has sold insurance since one year after his college graduation because of lac...

4 days here too! But we have a Wednesday co-op that runs from 8:30-1:45. So I can't do that and school too. So technically, they are in "school" somewhere for 5 days but I only do MFW for 4. LOVE IT. I also like the break in the middle. Most would like a 3 day weekend but I like the Wed off.

We have enjoyed ECC a lot more than we did Adventures! And if it helps any....we all have the burn-out here too. I may just be done! I have only 2 weeks left in ECC. I may save it for July when it is so hot we can't do anything! I think I need a break.

This is just a thought to help with testing. www.spellingcity.com is a free site. You enter in your spelling words and then they play games like hangman. Mine always liked to use it. They really didn't even understand they were learning! My DD 1st grade PS teacher recommended it for the whole class....

I would do Adventures and stretch it out for 2 years. Add in field trips...join a co-op....take your time. I used www.homeschoolshare.com for extras with Adventures. They have lots of free lapbooks. I would just type in the subject and then see if something came up. I wouldn't read the recommended b...

My 7 year old is just finishing up ECC. She will be 8 the end of this month when we finally finish. She did just fine. I did tweak it a bit like some others say. After Writing Strands 4?

My 11 yo son is just about ready to finish up Writing Strands 4. I feel like we've been diligent with it this year, but I'm hoping that we're where we need to be with the actual writing. Writing isn't a huge love of mine, but I know that it is so important... Any ideas out there on how to encourage...
