7th grade science
I'm seriously considering going against MFWs recommendations and not using Apologia General for dd's 7th grade science. I'd then use the MFW science as written. That would leave: General in 8th Physical in 9th Biology in 10th Chemistry in 11th Advanced Biology or Physics in 12th. Has anyone done thi...

Re: Excited, yet nervous!
I would just like to encourage you that you made a wonderful choice! MFWK was such a beautiful year for us. It gave my dd a very strong foundation in her math and reading readiness. She's now a voracious reader and really likes school. MFWK math gave her such a strong base that she breezes through S...

Re: Homeschool Lonelies
God bless you, ladies. Thank you so much for your words and experiences and advice. It's so hard to see our little ones hurting. We are very much the same. DD very limited in TV and has no video games, we dress modestly and don't allow "boy crazy" into her life, no secular music, etc. It sets her ap...

Re: 2nd grade math, currently in Singapore 2A
Thank you SO much for your replies! I think we're going to slow a little wee bit, do Friday as a drill day and a game of Dino Math Facts (super cute game that we found at a library used book sale - what a great resource for 1st and 2nd grade) and maybe some flash cards. Then, we'll only be a wee bit...

Using a scale in Singapore 2a - days 42, 43, 46
I am looking at day 42 and 43 and day 46. Is there one scale that covers everything we need? I've looked online and find a scale that I think would work for heavier items but not the smaller stuff in day 43. I'm also assuming its important to use an analog scale. The only scale I currently have is ...

My daughter just finished a Beverly Lewis book from the Cul De Sac Kids series. She loved it. DD is 7 and she laid the book down and pleaded with me to run to the library for more. Just tossing another one out there

Re: Nutcracker question for Adventures
I'd go to the live performance if I could! My dd has loved the whole Nutcracker unit and we've read several book versions. There's a ballet troupe doing the performance in a nearby city but's being done just a couple nights before Christmas and we'd have to drive into the city at night.... I think I...

If I remember right, your little man is just about 7, right? I was thinking about your situation and the real fears and concerns I read in your posts. Thanks very much. I don't want to miss anything! Re: Books w/ character issues... what to do?
Hi Shawna, We're very much where you are. Call me overprotective, but the character issues bother me. I don't want my daughter thinking that bad behavior is acceptable because a book heroine does it and all is well. And I especially don't like the portrayals where Mom and Dad need little Susie to sh...

Re: Adventures: line spacing for notebook pages
Yep, just like gratitude said, I used a ruler and just made the dotted line a solid line. Then were twice as many lines, half the size, and dd does a nicer job.

Looking for easy-to-read books for new reader
I am looking for ideas for easy to read books for my 6-year-old. She is at the stage of beginning to read three-sound words, such as fat, cat, pop, bug, etc. Most, if not all, of the easy readers I found in our local library are too advanced for her. I'm looking for something with mainly short vowe...

There's one called 100 Bible Stories, 100 Bible Songs and it's really cute. The lessons are perfectly age appropriate and my dd has loved it. The CDs are nice extras.

Need Bible story for Fox Unit
The Fox Unit for MFW K seems to be lacking a good Bible story to illustrate how "God makes me wiser than my enemies". Kids don't really have enemies, and while Satan is our enemy, that's a little hard for them to understand just yet. The curriculum gives the example of the children of Israel winnin...

Yours is such an honest, transparent post. Thank you for sharing from your heart to help all of us who are in the trenches alongside you. You were so wise to re-focus and let God speak. Placement help
I don't know which to use...MFW 1 or adventures. We started K this year and dd was bored. We just started doing the basics...reading, writing and math. Not much fun but it works. Next year I don't want to be bored again, but I also don't want to push too hard. She reads pretty well, doesn't really ...

Wanting to start next year-lots of questions!
I pulled my children out of public school in November of this school year. I have a 5th grader, 2nd grader, and a preschooler (he is 5, but he has a late birthday). We are currently using an eclectic approach using Story of the World Vol. 1 for history. I have been led repeatedly by God to MFW and ...

I thought I'd toss out these books right off the top of my head: the Carl Sommer books are lovely for character building and my little one has enjoyed all of them. Also, the Janette Oke animal friends series is very nice. There are some really exceptional ones by Max Lucado too - the Wemmick books, ...

Re: Pencil grip
Thank you so much for all your advice and experiences. :) We have used the training grips which helped at first. Re: Question about K level
Oh I agree with Dawn! MFW K is such a great program. My dd has used only this program and she is a very strong reader at 6 years old, 1/2 way through MFW 1st. It may be a slower pace, and there'll certainly be some review, but his foundation will be so strong that he'll rapidly progress. I don't thi...
