Re: 1st grade math

My dd has struggled in math this year as well (she is also in MFW1). Honestly, I haven't pushed it at all until this past month or so. I realized that everything else in school is really easy for her so it seems reasonable to get the Math out and really start putting some effort into it. It's really...

Re: MFW K ? DD4 is ready, should I start in the fall?

My youngest will be 5 in July. She followed along with her big sister doing K this year and did quite well. Big sister was 5 1/2 and youngest was barely 4 at the beginning. I didn't push anything with youngest, but just offered her work when she asked for it and was interested. Midway through the ye...

Re: Schooling schedule (weekly)

I combine my K and 1st grader similar to how AnnieMarie does. I posted about it on my blog here: http://www.westhavenkids.com/node/2815 One thing we do not do is most of the science/Bible activities from K. My DS was part of everything last year when DD and I did them. This year he joins her in all...

Re: What to do during a 5 month gap?

One of my dreams is to learn more about the old testament holidays, I know we do that in CTG, but it would be fun to do a little of that during your hiatus. Also, perhaps spending more time on some of the "extras" like art, music, nature walks, diving into a project or an area of interest that your ...

Re: I think I have a problem.....

Oh my word I am so right there with you! Today, I opened up our MFW K package for my littlest dd who is "Officially" doing K now instead of just tagging along. Thursday we will start MFW1 for my middle dd, and I have been reading a little bit about Adventures already and getting excited about that! ...

Re: Assignment board? Good, bad or neutral??

I did something similar with my oldest when we pulled her out of public school for 5th grade to homeschool. I used a white board and wrote her schedule up there for her to be responsible for. At first we only did a few subjects that way, but by the end of the year, most subjects were up there. It wa...

Re: Self-control and temper issues, any suggestions?

Julie, Thank you so much for your reply. That makes perfect sense! I guess I just needed to hear that and be reminded to take it slow with her and that her behavior is normal for her age. Thank you so much Claire. It looks like our kids are close in age. We are resuming a more normal schedule tomorr...

Kindergarten Graduation today:-)

I just wanted to share what a sweet day today was for us. It was our first ever Kindergarten Graduation Day! (We get to do it again next year with our youngest). I decided to do this for several reasons: 1. I needed some incentive to organized the school work the girls did all year long. 2. I wanted...

Re: Bible in Kindergarten

We just finished the K program last week. My girls got a lot out of the bible verses we read on day 2, the "Words To Remember" that we reviewed every day and the character traits that those Words to remember emphasized. Every activity that we did during the week reinforced the bible concept that the...

Re: At what age do you start teaching cursive?

Thank you all so much. Our local Christian school teaches the children cursive before printing (Abeka) and my oldest dd really struggled with that. I like waiting at this point. My K-er has neat printing, but works hard at it. I'm in no rush to start her, but just was curious what others do. That wa...

Re: Newbie ?: physical space & organisation??

My goal has been to use items we already have around the house more efficiently. Our budget is tight and I didn't want to clutter the house up with a ton of extra things. So far the only "school" purchase I have made is a desk for dd6. This year I set us up to do school in our formal dining room and...

Re: PreK activites?

I just thought I would officially say "hi." What a fun year this will be for you:-) Like Crystal, I have read of families taking 2 years to complete the K program doing it 3 days a week, and it seems to work out quite well. You can fill in with other activities and just let the kiddos play. With my ...

MFW 1st grade ordered!

@spaldingclan - congrats! I just ordered my preschool package so we are in the waiting game together! Yay! @ Melissa - how old was your child when he/she started the K program? @maritime momma - I just wanted to let you know that my soon to be first grader (Ava) was 5 1/2 when she started the K pro...

Re: Do you combine activities?

I would say pick and choose. We have not done all of the arts and crafts for K this year because,,(clearing throat) I am not so much the crafty type and that kind of stuff usually totally stresses me out! (I'm a little bit too type A for crafts sometimes. I'm working on it :~ ) Plus, I knew that my ...

Re: choosing between kindergarten and 1st

I just thought I would chime in with my 2 cents and our experience. I am just about done with K with my 6 year old (turned 6 in January). I must say it has not been academically difficult for her. However, I would do it all again. Here's why: 1. I love love love the gentle approach to teaching phoni...

MFW 1st-Getting excited:-)

I got my hands on a copy of an MFW 1st TM. My dd saw it on the kitchen counter and casually asked, "Mom, what's this?" I said, "Oh just something I'm looking at." She looked at it and said, "It says, 'My Father's World First Grade". " ;) Hm, guess she's ready! She was grinning the whole time and eag...

Re: #17 - Kangaroo

We really loved this unit! Some of the things we did: 1. We made the pencil cups using small glass jars covered in brown paper as the pouch. One of my dd's wanted her Kanga to have a joey, so we cut out a small kangaroo and attached him to the from of the pouch. It was really cute. 2. We went outsid...

Re: Another Kindergarten question ~

Hi there Cindie, I thought I'd just put in my two cents since I recently went through this. My youngest dd will be 5 in July too. Re: K daughter tiring after writing

Julie, I hadn't thought about getting two different sized desks. Good point! The ones that I have found on craigslist aren't terribly expensive and I like that they have built in storage for all of the girls books and art supplies so that they could get to it easily and then put it away out of sight...

Re: K daughter tiring after writing

I had thought of the booster seat idea, but I'm concerned that it would put her up too high with the table, and her legs would get stuck under this table. However, I might take a look at those anyway. We have the room for the desks (We are borrowing the dining set from my mom so it would go back to ...

Re: Question about doing K again next year with youngest

That was kind of my thought as well. I just finished reading all of the links posted above and found them all to be very helpful. I definitely do not want to rush dd4. She will be 5 in July, but still, too young to officially be in first grade. Right now I am leaning toward purchasing the K student ...

I wanted to ease us all into homeschooling

My dd turned 6 last week (Jan. 3) but at the beginning of the school year she already new most of the K stuff. However, I went ahead with K because I wanted to ease us all into homeschooling together and decided it would be better if it was too easy and do more (go wider not faster) than if it was t...
