Re: How much of K would you use for a younger child?
I'd say even the Basic Package is more than necessary. (I've taught MFW K 6 times, on my 7th now) You need the Teacher's manual, student sheets, the alphabet flashcards and some sort of movable alphabet around 1-3" in height--lower case. I had been given a Melissa & Doug letter magnet set the right ...

Re: Why not continue with Rod and Staff Spelling?
Thanks I had this same question. My impression was that Spelling Power is MFW's choice for a spelling program, but they went looking for something else for the 2nd grade because SP is for 3rd and up. In other words the R&S is the "change" but it happens to come first.

Re: ECC Book Basket List - author's name variation
Yeah I wish the library database would pop up stuff that is of similar spelling. Make one tiny typo and they come up with zero hits. Kind of a pain sometimes, but still faster than card catalogue, and ordering ahead from home is so valuable with lots of littles!

Re: Health Cirriculum
Our state requires health, and since I wanted to just be able to write down a book for reporting I got the Rod and Staff one...2nd grade I believe. It's not one I would recommend for content, but we read through it and there are some things I wouldn't have thought to teach before encountering.

Re: Prek and Kindy
Let the 4 yo sit at the table and participate. He would be able to do lots of the verbal parts and the tactile activities. Then let him do playdough, look at books, color, etc. during the parts he's not ready for. We've done it like that when my boys were 2 and 3/4 and again now when they are 3 and ...

Re: When kids teach themselves to read...??
Thanks for all the ideas. So the memorizing and guessing now won't lead to trouble later on? I'm fine with doing MFW K as written and Noah Webster now and then. The writing is a concern. I could see him getting sick of it if he had to do too much writing at this point, and it wouldn't hurt to spend ...

Re: How do you run your home?
For the laundry, I've given up on putting it away. Since it was constantly in a clean pile on the "laundry counter" I figured it wouldn't make a difference if we just put it in baskets, so that's what we do. Clean loads go directly from the dryer into the appropriate person's basket. The baskets are...

Re: Start MFW 1 now???
Zoe2ski, If you look at a spelling rules list and a phonics book or two, you will have the idea and easily be able to answer your sons questions without doing the books with him. I didn't realize til just now, that this is what I am really looking for--something for ME to learn the rules. I guess I...

Re: Start MFW 1 now???
I do appreciate your insight and ideas. I'm not looking for ways to entertain this child and keep him busy and learning, he WANTS to learn to read his Bible on his own. I gave examples of other things he's taught himself to paint a picture for you of what he does without a curriculum, with me answer...

Re: Start MFW 1 now???
Thank you Carin, thank you thank you! Phew. Yours sounds so much like mine (I'll tell you, my almost 3 y.o. is not like that). There's so much I could do with him during these next couple years, and like you said I want to catch the windows, but mostly want him to play. That's why I'm so conflicted ...
