Re: Adventures for an Advanced 1st grader?
Sylvia was in first grade when we used Adventures. She was already an excellent reader, and although I also had my oldest daughter in the program (third grade), Sylvia kept up perfectly and I didn't have to modify anything for her.

Re: The ... Topic
I've used the first two God's Design books with my oldest (10) and the first one with my youngest (8). I highly recommend them. It kept things fairly simple and appropriate. I need to check out the third book to see if I need to go there yet with DD10.

I would skip Gladys Aylward. There are a lot of warnings for the book. My 2 aren't sensitive, but several things had them recoiling.

Re: Is this giving my little daughter a complex?
It sounds very familiar to me, and I'd just do what's best for your DD. Rebecca can be a little critical of Sylvia and I constantly have to point out that she's 2 years older.

Re: Is ECC too much for a 3rd grader?
My second grader is in ECC this year. She does nothing labeled "advanced" except she will sit in on the extra atlas readings. She's made beautiful coloring pages and cute Living World pages too. POE goes over her head some, but she can usually help answer a question or two. She has loved all the cra...

Re: Trying to decide on MFW?
I've used both. I used SL for Rebecca's 2nd grade year. I really didn't like it. The LA was horrible and I ditched it halfway in for more concrete teaching (R&S, WWE). The books really were all over. We hated the history spine, Child's History of the World. It was painfully boring. Rebecca still has...

Re: Is Adventures too much for a 6.5 year old?
I did Adventures last year with both of my girls, 1st and 3rd grades. Sylvia did very well in it, and I don't think it was too much for her in the slightest. We all had a wonderful year.

Re: How do your kids "do" school?
Rebecca often does gymnastics stretches while we're doing oral review for her grammar. Lately, the girls have been playing with LPS or knotting their fleece blankets while I read Cameron Townsend. I look at it as a benefit of homeschooling.

ECC - books on Everest and Antarctica
On the suggestion of someone from the FB group, I read Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World and found it fascinating. I don't think the girls are quite ready for it though.[2nd and 4th grades] I'm also almost done with Into Thin Air, again, riveting.

Re: I can do all things art (with Adventures)
I don't love ICDAT, it's probably my least favorite part of Adv. We've stuck with it though. I haven't found it to be parent intensive at all, which I do love. I don't have to do anything more than squeeze out some paint and help wash brushes some weeks. The girls have become pretty independent with...

Other ladies have said more than I can, but I'm using Adv. this year with a very bright 3rd and 1st grader. We've done extra science (but dropped it because Apologia Anatomy really is too much info for them right now!), way more read-alouds, and both girls do a foreign language and logic. I also tas...

My girls will be using ECC next year in grades 2 and 4 as well. Like others have said, I wouldn't try ECC and Adventures together. We're doing Adventures this year (including my first grader) and it's pretty full!

It usually takes us 2 days to get through a list. I've done a whole list in one day if Rebecca isn't missing any words.
