Re: newbe how to combine 4 and 5 yr old??

Welcome. I had a 4 and 5 yo last year. Same thing in a couple years when my 2 and 3yo are ready. I plan on doing the samething with my 2 and 3yo b/c it worked out so well. My 4yr joined in for everything except phonics. Math was a strong interest for him so I didn't tell him no. This year he is join...

Re: need help with blend ladder, tearful child (K)

Hugs, It will be okay! Deep breath, it is your first day. It is completely new to her. I’ve never seen reading taught like this, nor you, or her. Panic attack! (At least that was my thoughts :~ .) The first week we “used” the ladder, the ladder was nowhere to be seen. I had to hide it because of a s...

Re: When to start K?

I started my ds in May, a few months before his 6th b-day. He was more than ready. I could have started him at 4 but I thought we were sending him to ps at the time. We are speeding through K and hope to start 1st in Jan/Feb. He isn't bored with K by any means but it is easy for him. My 4yr is liste...

Re: MFW-K--short vowels only?

I highly recommend the slower pace of MFW over the ps. As a reading teacher we did cover all the vowels (short, long, and some "fancy vowels") in K, and all in 1st, and again in 2nd, and continued to review in 3rd. Yes they cover them sooner and faster but it doesn't stick. PS teachers don't expect ...

Re: Math for Kindergarten

I haven't really pulled anything out of my teacher stash. It's all in storage. We use a lot of everyday things like Crystal said. My boys like the "real stuff." As far as clocks, I just use a broken one we had...well one the boys broke but it "works" for what we need. ;) Place value is also introduc...

Re: MFW-K what to laminate

If you are using the c. rods book, I also laminated mine with all that other stuff. I tore out all the pages b/c the rods slid on the open book. I've got 4 boys and knew the pages would get torn up if I didn't. If you don't laminate them, I would at least put them in page protectors ;) I also lamina...

Re: Creation... dinosaurs...YE/OE... MFWK

To the OP, my best advice would be to stay in the scripture every day and pray and ask God to reveal the truth to you. The other books and information are ok as well but first and foremost follow the scriptures. :) Sometimes we need child like faith. ;) Prayers for your journey. As for reading, It ...

Re: New Badges in Kindergarden

We are hanging ours around our bulletin board each time ds learns one. He can easily see how much he has learned. He gets really excited about that! We don’t wear them because our nearest neighbor is a cow…moo. That also keeps them handy if I want to review something later. I did laminate them first!

Re: lesson plan book

I use some from Donna Young and http://new-bintexas.webs.com/freecurriculumplanner.htm. Just print off what I need or use those pages to give me ideas to create my own using word or excell. I have found that I need to be able to change formats mid-year sometimes So I print what I need, modify, print...

Re: Anyone do MFWK by the guide (no extras)?

Right now, summer, I am adding a few extras off the the boards. But we are also stretching each unit out over two weeks, three/four days each week. When school starts, we will be picking up the pace. The only thing "extra" I will be strongly encouraging is a full book basket. Even if he is just look...

Re: Handwriting--How far to push??

When I was teaching, I aimed for neatness. I wanted their letters to sit on the bottom line. I wanted to see capitals taller than the lower case. I knew my kids would be using notebook paper the following year. If it sat on the bottom line, it was proportional, and I could read it easily, I was happ...

Exploration to 1850 your own State History

Where I can I find good and concise information on Texas State History? There is just so much I don't how to pick and choose. Where did you find the information for your particular state? I'm in Ohio so... My library has a "local history" section that has some pretty good stuff to sort through. Dow...

I thought I would share a specific experience that happened last week. I know that MFW-K is working for us and we are only on unit 2! As a teacher, I have very high expectations for curriculum. This is above and beyond what I had hoped for! Everything is so simple and yet there is so much being lear...

Haven't had time to read through all the responses yet. Youngest wants attention now. But I wanted to give you a quick resource I used a lot while teaching reading. fcrr.org has a lot of free reading activities you put together yourself. Fair warning, the books are large pdf, not recommended for dia...

Re: MFW-K and state requirements for social studies, days,

Welcome along! We just started K a month ago. My plan is to move on to MFW-1 when we finish. Still consider my ds a Ker. He will just happen to be doing 1st grade work. That gives us time to slow down later if need be or take some extra fieldtrips without feeling rushed or guilty. Keep in mind that ...

If it helps, you may find that your son will like to join in the activities so that you can do some school during the morning. I have a 4y and nearly 3y tag-a-longs. They love the science/history/bible actities!!! If you keep it simple, that can be their "preschool". That will also give you more tim...
