Re: Having trouble with motivation

Julie - thanks for the idea of doing school prep during school hours. I was trying to do it at night, but I realized yesterday that night is my official 'relax' time, and since that has been robbed for weeks and I sometimes have almost no time to myself in those hours, I've been ditching almost ever...

Re: Staying on task/balancing act

I start out our day with family activities - smaller ones - like songs, music, and weather chart. We eat breakfast together and sometimes I will cuddle with them in my bed for a morning story. Our youngest is doing MFW-K so I have him do his school lessons after that, saving the hands-on activities ...

Re: Preschooler's "big school" comments

Our children did the same thing. We have other children at our apartment complex here, and they would leave for what our kids used to call 'real school'. Our kids also wanted to ride on the bus they saw coming and going on our street every day. What I did was explain to them that homeschool *is* 're...

Re: Taking days off? Shorter school week?

Thank you so much for re-affirming this for me. As I said, I burn out too. When I get on a new exciting adventure with homeschooling it usually goes about a month and then I want to quit. Not really, but it just get overwhelming. I think we're going to take a day off today. I think I do like the ide...

Re: A typical day in MFW-K

I like the idea of doing the 'activities' after lunch. I often try to fit all of our MFW K and 1st in between breakfast and lunch, and it feels really rushed sometimes...especially when our DD has her heavier copywork days. She is slower with longer writing work, and I don't like rushing her through...

Re: Keeping Records

Thank you all so much for the ideas! I keep forgetting about donnayoung, that is SUCH a great resource. :-) I'll need to go check out her Homeschool and housekeeping schedules, things can get really crazy for us since I am not a 'born organizer', and I also work from home as an artist on top of home...

Re: Workboxes

I don't have a super organized system yet, but we have only been using MFW for a couple weeks. :-) We're rounding up on our first month! Yay! I have a notebook I use to keep notes of what we do, that is still a work in progress. But as for a workbox, right now we have one medium-sized flip-top box t...

Re: Flipped schedule - opinions?

Thanks for the advice, and pointing things out. I saw the exact same thing today. It did get their wiggles out, but then it made them so squirmy and drained that my DD (7) could hardly sit still, it took her an hour to do her bible copywork and workbook page for MFW 1st. That is WAY too long. And, s...

MFW 1st

I've sort of hit the ground running with this curriculum (we started only a week after it got here, lol). Yeah, we're having a blast! Some days are hard, and the writing is a BIG push for our daughter, as is the math (she has a hard time with comprehension sometimes, she's a daydreamer like me :-) )...

Re: Library books - frustration

WOW! So many replies! And so many fun discussions going on here. :-) I hope you all don't think I'm lame or whiny, it just blew me away that EVERY single book on her math & science list was checked out! Almost all of them are available at our branch, and all are gone. Craziness! But I searched by su...

Re: Schooling schedule (weekly)

There's a sticky thread in here that tells how to teach K and 1st together. [ http://board.mfwbooks.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=191 ] Each does their own math/reading, and then they can do the activities together. I guess we're just slow, we start at about 8/8:30 in the morning and are done by about 11,...

Re: Anyone do afternoon school? (Or any other modified sched

Oh thank you so much for opening this topic. We just started MFW K and 1st last Thurs. and I am trying to get into my groove with scheduling. I think our son has a really serious problem with having things be a certain way and schedules, or else he freaks out. So this will help I think. :-) Also, I ...

Re: Starting in the middle of the year?

Thank you for your replies! I do think I'll go ahead and start our daughter when the kits arrive (1st grade) and our son when he is ready, though I have a feeling that will be soon. He has been watching us since Sept. '10 with the AmblesideOnline curriculum. He will be EXCITED when he sees all of th...
