Re: Son not getting place value-MFW 1st

Thanks for the additional ideas! Crystal, I will try that and will try to work with him more on our own too without little sister there...that may be causing some distraction! My son is 6 and struggles concentrating, especially if he can't get something right away! I also think we need to play some ...

Re: Son not getting place value-MFW 1st

Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement! I was thinking that it was one of the harder concepts. We did go through MFW-K and so I do think a review of our popsicle sticks would be good! And we are using the number chart/100 chart as well. I'll be more patient :) and spend a little more time ...

Son not getting place value-MFW 1st

Hi everyone! We are into about 20+ days of MFW-1st and really like it! I was excited when my son began doing the long vowel activities in the workbook using the red pencil and he announced, "This is fun!" It became a game for him and has really been going well! However, he's really not grasping the ...

Re: Good readers and read-alouds for 1st grade

During K, I read aloud Winne the Pooh and A House at Pooh Corner to my son and daughter (then 5 and 2) mostly because I never read those books and wanted to but can't seem to find lots of time to read for leisure on my own ;) They are really cute stories although some of the humor my kids didn't get...

Re: Mom struggling with 1st grade math

Thanks for your help! I didn't realize that counting by 2's, 5's and 10's was to be done once the 100 chart had been completely filled out - that makes more sense now. I'll go back and look at the pages in the CBoM to see how you've lined things out here and see if I can figure out a plan too. Thanks!

Re: Read alouds in 1st

My son is 6 and we'll be starting MFW-1st in September. But this summer we've been doing read alouds with the picture books we have and there are favorites my children like. I do some reading in the morning, some in the afternoon and maybe in the evening before bed if I'm not too tired so I don't re...

Re: MFW K minimal order and a few ?

Hi! We just finished MFW-K at the end of May and my son was 5 when we started last September and turned 6 in January so he was 6 when we finished. He was already reading short words when we started in September and knew all of his letter sounds. He can do very simple addition if given objects to wor...

Re: All done with K!

We just finished MFW-K today and have loved this year!! We're also going to celebrate at Chuck E. Cheese since my son has a ball there! There were several things we didn't get to do though due to time and other life circumstances so we'll revisit those over the summer. Looking forward to MFW-1st! :)

Great site for Bible stories/studies and Character Training

Hi everyone! I found this great site from Focus on the Family that provides lessons on character training and heart issues for kids - it includes the lessons already prepared that can be downloaded as a PDF and then printed. http://kidsofintegrity.com/ For anyone doing MFW-K, this site has some less...

Re: What we've been up to! (MFWK)

We are also doing MFW-K and are having loads of fun! I really feel like the student more than the teacher on most days :) Here's my latest blog post from our Creation weeks and will be updating more on our sun and moon weeks that we've just completed: http://kimita.wordpress.com/2011/10/02/creation-...

Re: MFWK Flash Cards--did you do anything special?

I have considered purchasing a 2nd set, but right now we have only one set of flashcards. I have considered hanging up on the wall/window but we just started MFW-K this week (light week with just an introduction to the phonics games and some of the themes). My son loves the flashcards and laying the...

Re: Struggling to get it all done and we are just doing MFWK

Hi there! We are starting MFW-K this year also with my oldest, my 5yo son! My plan was to start this week after Labor Day and it's still possible but my son has been sick this past week and is just now recovering. We may need an extra week! But much much grace to you!! You have your hands full of go...

Re: Preschool box ideas

WOW! These are all such great ideas and all that my daughter will love! Since she has an older brother, she loves playing cars with him so really her school box could go either way :) But she loves organizing and sorting so the pompom idea is good too. And she'll be right with us in the kitchen as w...

Re: MFW-K phonics: need help with blend ladder vs. word fami

Thank you Carin for your gracious and wise response! I truly appreciate it! After much prayer and consideration, God is leading me to wait for MFW-K until my son turns 6 in January. This feels a bit scary to me since most kids his age will be in kinder this August. But after doing online research ab...

Re: MFW-K phonics: need help with blend ladder vs. word fami

I appreciate hearing all sides and angles :) thank you again! And thanks for posting the questions from MFW re: kinder readiness. In our state, Texas, there is an option to send a kindergartner to school at 6 rather than 5 due to maturity. This happens often in our district, I've been told, especial...

Re: MFW-K phonics: need help with blend ladder vs. word fami

Thank you all so much! That really does help to clear it up and give me a good starting point. We haven't been following any kind of curriculum for reading since I wanted to just see how he would do putting letters together to make words and he's done pretty well with the letter sounds that he's the...
