Early AHL success and going to buy CTG

So after a less than stellar start yesterday with ODD's attitude, AHL seems to be going very well. ODD was the one who asked to start, and yet when we did just that she had crossed arms and a pouty look on her face and a refusal to see anything good about the program......until we figured out the sc...

Re: Could y'all help me organize my day?

What wonderful ideas, Ruby, especially the one with the boxes. The kids would love to decorate a couple together and the babies would enjoy playing in them. My oldest daughter is.....not a fan of helping out with her younger siblings. But my second oldest loves to and is so good at it. I just worry ...

Re: Could y'all help me organize my day?

Hi there! I too have always been driven crazy by deadlines and schedules. I've never felt like we needed more than a routine. But I think this year with having a high schooler and other struggling leathers, I am going to have to have a stop time for each subject. Otherwise I could belly crawl throug...

Re: Could y'all help me organize my day?

Thank you ladies for making me feel so at ease and for being so encouraging. I am just getting. Ack to this after yet another crazy week (last of our household goods from military storage came, as did family and trying to finish up this last week of my algebra class). Crystal--yeah, I have actually ...

Re: MFW talks on YouTube

I am loving these! Thanks so much for posting. They are making me laugh and nod in agreement. I have been SO discouraged for so long in our homeschool. I deeply feel that God would have us homeschool, but I also feel completely run over by all the "issues" in our home (dyslexia, Asperger's, toddlers...

Re: Could y'all help me organize my day?

Thanks for your replies, I realize I may have made it sound like my life is SO much harder than everyone else's. "oh, woe is me, what shall I do?". But be assured I don't feel that way. In some ways I feel like my life is easier because my kids have each other, so it's not all about the big family. ...

Re: Getting Ready to Start and Already Discouraged lol

Julie, I think I might tell my DD much of what you've said here about her learning and real knowledge. You've aid it much better than I do in the heat of the moment and it might help her to see it frm someone else. Thanks so much!

Re: Abeka/MFW comparison

Having done both A Beka and MFW! I'm going to add my 2 cents..... ;) I was raised on A Beka. Went to Christian school all my life and, except a year in ACE and one in Alpha and Omega, it was all A Beka all the time. I even went to their college for a year. So it was a given that when I started to ho...

Re: Getting Ready to Start and Already Discouraged lol

You guys have made me smile and feel so much less alone today. Thank you so much. Lol! Oh Sandra, your post abut screaming had my laughing and crying. I am generally a non-cryer, but lately I have been so weepy. YES alone. Very, very alone. My husband is awesome, and my very best friend. But he is g...

Re: Getting Ready to Start and Already Discouraged lol

Thanks for your encouragement. I guess I should have made it clear in my post that I was not planning on her doing the curriculum herself from the get go. I had planned on getting together with her to show her the ropes. It was my irritation with her that threw her the books and said "go for it". We...

Re: Boy, do I want to do CTG!

Thanks, Idahogrown! One book that I know a lot of ancients programs use is Archimedes and the Door to Science, so, not knowing whether or not we would have the money for CtG, I got DD11 that book. All she can talk about is how long the chapters are. She did chapter 4 today and said "it's from pages ...

Re: Is anyone else's day like this?

Thanks very much for commiserating with me ladies. It does help to know I'm not alone.
Trish, I have been contemplating letting them do something while I read. Honestly, though? It distracts ME. Lol. I think I need to get over myself. ;)

Re: Is anyone else's day like this?

Thnk you, Crystal. You're right, not everyday is like this. I just feels like other are lately. I think it's mostly when I want to start a new program. And those days are so extraordinarily bad that they stick in my head to be immortalized forever, while the mundane, successful days sort of fade int...

Is anyone else's day like this?

Actual day: Me: Ok, Amber, we're going to do a kindergarten! Amber: yay! Me: ok, let's sing This is my Father's World. "this is my Father's World..." No Libby, no climbing on the table. (pull baby off table). "and to my listening ears..." No Juliet, no scissors. Swat baby's butt for crawling on tabl...

Re: Boy, do I want to do CTG!

Thanks so much to you all, especially for outlining the challenges you face with your children and how CtG works anyway, and for the enthusiasm and just plain encouragement. I have frankly been so knocked back off my feet by my second and third childrens' issues that it has kinda paralyzed us in jus...

Re: Boy, do I want to do CTG!

Thanks for your replies! I might just try it and see. I have a child whom I believe is dyslexic and am trying to remediate, and one son who has Asperger's and fine motor control that goes along with it. So writing is just one of those humps we just can't seem to get over. Attention and comprehension...

Our first day with K

I am so excited that we get to use K this year. It's my first time ever with K, even though we used 1st and ECC (didn't et through them though). Both my 5 yo and I loved our first day. I'm really getting it when it comes to MFW's constant pointing to Jesus. That's what we strive to do in all things ...

Re: Am even allowed to ask this?

Hi Cyndi--yes, I am sure that's the case--reading, reading, reading can be boring for those who don't like to. Just like crafts, crafts, crafts would make me want to do bad things to perfectly innocent books. I liked Sonlight for that very reason. There were no crafts and there was a lot of reading....

Re: Apologia: I don't wanna

Thank you SO much, Crystal! Ok, maybe we CAN do this. In one of your links I found another valuable resource: virtualhomeschoolmgroup.com. They have lectures on there! So no, it doesn't have to be online or DVD or anything, I just know I can't do it. I want to give her the greatest chance at success...

There is some GREAT advice in this thread! I love what Crystal and Melissa and all of you said! Because we live in my parents' house right now, our backstage footage has *become* our highlight reel, and it is so easy to forget that no one is perfect. All of our mistakes and ugly moments are so very ...

Re: How to become a hands on teacher

Joyce--thank you! We did not do Global Art at all when we did ECC either--not that we did it long. My idea of fun extra curriculars is....map work. Lol. We find it on the map and maybe put a pin in it. Ta-da! Extras. Lol. Oh! My kids DID like the geography songs in ECC. We still sing them sometimes,...
