Re: Anyone in Monterey, CA?

Hi! We are not in Monterey but we (DH and I) are originally from Monterey County. We now live in South Santa Clara County. However last year we ended up in Marina 2 days a week. It’s about a 45 minute drive for us. We did the reading center at csumb two afternoons a week for my dyslexic son last yea...

CTG subbing MOH1 and Geology

Do you think it would be worth it to do CTG if we decided to substitute Mystery of History vol 1 for Streams if Civilizations for a 7th and 4th grader next year? I was also thinking of using a Geology course for my 7th grader. I could potentially do the science with my 4th grader included maybe? We ...

Re: Try a New Schedule for 2017-2018

I've been thinking about this lately. For the most part we have schooled round and taken a longer break in winter (thanksgiving through Christmas) and had wiggle room through the year, and lately it seems like an inevitable spring break because of having babies in March lol. This year we ended up ta...

Using MFW 1st into First Semester of Second Grade?

Hello! I'm using mfw 1st currently with my ds7. He is my second oldest so is using it for first this year for math and Lang only and tags along with my dd10's core for everything else. We are on week 21 and have had to slow down significantly as he has difficulty retaining the phonics rules, fluency...

Re: Praise for Animal Train

For those of you have used all aboard would you say it is appropriate for a 2 year old or is it better to hold off for a 3 year old. My toddler just turned 2. She'll be 2 1/2 at the start of next school year. Not sure if we should do it next fall or wait a year. I do feel like she'd enjoy having set...

Re: NEW! Voyage of Discovery – A Pre-K Adventure

So excited! I was hoping a preschool package for 3/4's would come out soon! I know we'll get some good use of it as in have a 2 year old and newborn twins! Looking forward to using it when my toddler is old enough!

Re: Preschool thoughts....

It could be tricky but I think it really depends on family dynamics and what other commitments you have. I have thought of getting the toy package next year so she could have some special "school toys" and then do All Aboard the following year. When my dd is 3 my older two will be in one program so ...

Singapore placement for 2nd grader

Have you used the Singapore math booklets yet? If so I was wondering if it goes more in depth in the teachings, because so far I purchased the 1B/2A booklet. We're on 1B right now, but it seems like it skims through the different teachings fairly quickly. I thought we would spend more time on subje...

Re: Need character building, afraid I messed up

If it's not a financial burden, then go for it; shelf ADV and start 1st. You could even just break now and just have her practice reading and do some math games until your curriculum arrives and your set up. Think of it as a "fall break". 1st is challenging and a lot of fun. I loved the Bible reader...

Re: Teaching multiple grades!!

I have a k'er and 3rd grader. Things are hectic because we have an 18 month old baby in the mix. My goal in the AM is to do like PoohBee and read a Bible Story to both kids and then do k time with my ds and have dd do her independent work. When baby goes down for nap, we do our Adv core and any math...

Re: 3.5 yr old and 18 month old curriculum - New to MFW

I have an 18 month old and have been eying All Aboard. I cannot imagine her using it now. I will likely wait until the fall she turns 3. Then at 4, the pre-k package. Who knows? Maybe they'll make a new program for 4's. I think your best bet is to do it with your 3 year old and let the 18 month old ...

Re: Combining K and 1st

First I would suggest giving mfw a call to see what they'd recommend. In general the advice is to teach to the oldest. They might be able to offer you a payment plan or advice you what you could get away with buying and save the most money. They also can help access were each kids at and that could ...

Re: Adventures + K students

I am doing k this year with my k & 2nd grader. We have gotten through weeks 1-9 in ADV and the Thanksgiving unit. My k'er had done the intro and units 1-4 plus tagged along for Thanksgiving. We're doing holiday school right now so that's been fun. I am doing most of the k program but we are doing k ...

I am going to offer a different perspective, primarily because you say he's capable of doing narration in other areas. I think maybe you are over helping him. Sometimes when I helped dd with math or writing I noticed she tended to have this glazed over look and checked out. Same thing with my stepso...

Re: enough hours?

If you divide 1,000 hours by 180 days (36x5), then you need about 5.5 hrs of school a day. I would also look at mfw as 170 days of school (34x5). Although Friday is scheduled as a light day, it would still count as school to me. That would leave you 10 extra days, which you can easily fill with fiel...

Kindy Help

Okay, so this is embarrassing, but we are just finishing Unit 6, Turtle for Kindy. &) Oct-Jan has been rough for us, how fitting "I don't quit, I persevere!" Re: Shorten mfw 1st

You could start in week 12 when the Bible reader starts as you completed half of 1st grade and that would cut it back to 22 weeks, which working through summer you could probably finish by the end of summer but you'd miss the first 1/3 so don't know if you want to spend the $ when you already have a...

Re: Kindergarten and Preschool with two year spacing in kids

My kids are 2 years apart. I did not get student sheets for my then 3 year old when we did k and I didn't this year for 1st. I plan to do the math and Lang portion, which mfw recommends, when he's in k & 1st and so didn't want it to be repetitive, but like others shared, he's done mfw k & 1st as his...

We had a wonderful time with these weeks the weeks prior to Thanksgiving! We went to a monarch preserve on the beach and had a lovely fall picnic with grilled cheese sandwiches and soup and walked on the beach. A fall beach trip is a very different experience. It's quieter and since no one was going...

Re: Which year of MFW to use?

Another vote for Adventures as a general over view of US History. It's specifically designed for grades 2/3, and it can be completed in a bit less te than the mfw 5-year cycles and with a new baby you might need that wiggle room. If you chose to stick with mfw you could complete the 5 year cycle if ...

We did k last year and I'll be teaching it again next year for the 2nd time :). We started mfw 1st this year and are on week 8. So far we are enjoying it. I added some stuff in but have since removed them since it was just dragging our day down. In my opinion, the tm offers a lot of suggestion for d...

Re: What to do with a 4yo who wants to learn to read?

I would teach him using the flashcards in MFWK and sing the song. A,a, Apple, b,b, butterfly and continue to work on the sounds of the letters. Make it a game. Don't push it but if he is asking have him take baby steps. Not a full program just the sounds. I think if you plan to do mfw k and can aff...

Re: Worried about doing "enough" for 2nd and 1st grader

I would strongly suggest that you read Honey for a Child's Heart and For the Sake of the Children to understand the reasoning behind why k and 1st is set up like it is. Childhood is short and so if your kids seem to fly through the curriculum I would use the opportunity to do more of the read alouds...
