Fun science book for Solids/Liquids/Gases for younger grades

We just checked this out of our library to use with Adventures week 26, and really enjoyed it. Change It! Solids, liquids, gases and you by Adrienne Mason. My DD really balks at TOO much information; this book had nice pics, not too much detail, and fun, easy experiments. We actually did 2 experiment...

Just received the new Language Lessons for Today

I just received the new Language Lessons for Today...Grade 2. I didn't order the original one as I didn't think it would work for us. I'm very glad I didn't! This new one seems just right. We may use it right through next year since we started it late. I don't want to push through as I know my daugh...

Re: Singapore 1A-1B...too much thinking?

I'd like to thank each of you ladies for helping me to think a little more clearly today :). It is always so helpful to hear different perspectives or even the same one, yet from someone who has already gone through it. Lori, thanks for letting me know I'm NOT alone & my daughter is not the only one...

Re: ADV Week 12, including Bird Study

I found a great book that fits in well with both NJ and PA. It's called "The First Air Voyage in the United States, the Story of Jean-Pierre Blanchard". He grew up in France, then came to America in 1793 and flew from Philadelphia to Woodbury, NJ in his hot air balloon. George Washington is mentione...

Thanksgiving "turkey handprint" another idea

In Adventures, one of the activities is to trace your child's handprint to make a turkey...since my daughter has done this countless times, I was actually going to skip it &) and try to find something else to do instead. I found a neat idea--still using the handprint. Trace the hand onto a thin card...

Re: Nutcracker question for Adventures

Thank you all...I have gone ahead and ordered the tickets for the performance which is Dec. 20. We are blessed in that the theater is only 5 minutes away at our local college so there is no travel involved. I am just hoping the "fight" scene is not too scary as it's a nighttime show & it will be bed...

Great colonial New England recipe for Adventures

I found this recipe for Indian Pudding in a little book we picked up from Target's dollar bin. I chose to make this in lieu of the Johnny Cakes since I knew no one in our house would touch them :). From what I've read, it was a variation of the hasty pudding that the English were used to. It uses co...

Re: MFW with an "only" child?

Welcome!! We have only used MFW-K, 1st, and now starting Adventures w/my 2nd grader. BUT, she too is an "only child" due to a big age gap--my older 2 are 21 and 23. I'm finding that she is my greatest challenge...not sure exactly why but I have my ideas. (It doesn't help that I'M older & really thou...

Excellent phonics game for K-2

My first grader has been kind of bored with the reading sessions...not because they're easy but because she likes everything to be "fun", lol. I found a new game to add to MFW's suggestions--it involved rolling dice to spell a word. The site allows you to customize your dice by entering your own "wo...

Re: How long to make 1st grade timeline?

Ok, thanks everyone; I feel better now! Since I don't have to add any more to it I'll just stick up a straight line of painter's tape. I do like the idea of the accordion style with the cardstock--that will definitely work out better in later years with more stuff to add to it!
