Re: What are your plans for 2018-2019?

We took Memorial Day through mud-July off and just began to get back into our routine. Dedicated school will begin Aug 6. We're still on week 29 of CTG, so we'll probably begin RTR mid-late Aug. Slowly collecting my books! Excited!

Re: "Gospel" is an unusual word - Minutes with Marie

Thank you so much, Marie! This is what we've been doing for years, and it feels very Spirit led. Yet I sometimes question myself if I should be gently challenging some of those beliefs. I don't want to, honestly. I think they have the heart of the gospel and that's the best part. I feel that we caus...

Re: "Gospel" is an unusual word - Minutes with Marie

Marie, for some reason, in our homeschooling circle, God has brought me friends of varying denominational backgrounds. I have a Greek Orthodox friend, a couple of Catholic friends, and just recently met a new friend who is Messianic. If all of these people love Jesus and believe in the Gospel as I d...

Re: Finishing “on time”

I just spoke to a friend who gave me a really great third option that I think is the right choice! I think we'll continue with Bible, History, and math whenever we are home this summer, then take a break when we reach the end of CTG. That gives us a break from most academics while simultaneously fin...

Re: Finishing “on time”

Well, that makes sense. But I think I'd be sad not to complete the cycle with them. We enjoy it so much. We usually school year-round. But I might finish differently this time. Tell me what you think of these options: We are in week 26 of CtG. We just got back from the beach and my kids have VBS nex...

Finishing “on time”

I get really stressed sometimes about completing the MFW history cycle before high school. We used a different curriculum one year, so my oldest won’t repeat ECC. We should be able to complete the history cycle “on time”, but things always take longer than I expect and life ends up stretching out ou...

Re: Looking for a Synergy Group!!

Btw, as Julie suggested in the Synergy sticky above, I have posted on every local homeschooling message board (2 of them) and every national MFW FB page I’m a member of (3 of them) , and spread the word in my community about what I’m looking for. No one at all found yet.

Looking for a Synergy Group!!

I’m looking to join or start a Synergy Group near Athens, GA for RtR this fall! Please contact me if interested! I have an 11yo boy and a 9 yo girl. My kids play well with boys and girls of all ages, and we especially have a shortage of boys in our friendship pool! So families with boys aged 9-12 ar...

Thank you!!!

I recently got a call from Julie at MFW just to check on my family and see how things are going. Although I never got a chance to call back, we are having an excellent year! MFW has taught ME so much and I'm so thankful for it. We love CTG!

Singapore

My 5th grader is at Ex 21 of Singapore 3B. I don’t follow the MFW lesson plan schedule exactly because, although he’s very good at math, he’s a slow worker. I was the same way and I ended up hating math. Rather than push him to work more quickly and get super frustrated, making our days long and mis...

New Year

So, what are you all doing differently, if anything, for school this new year? My kids can't handle much change because they depend on our routine. But I've started listing their independent work on clipboards so they can check things off as they go. That way they know what to do when I'm working wi...

Re: Math drill

It is really just beginning. Really picks up in 2B. Don't worry if you haven't noticed it yet. The instructions on the MFW flash cards also recommend at what level you should be doing the cards, and in what order.

Re: Math drill

They're horizontal because it encourages using mental math and many different ways to solve the same problem. When they're vertical, we tend to try to use carrying and borrowing. I'm sure you probably could use any horizontal math flashcarrds. The benefit to using MFW flash cards is that they print ...

Re: Need some help with math, English, and pre-adolescence!

Thank you both so much! This is helping me think it all through. We are in week 10, about a week and a half behind schedule. But I'm not worried about that since we enjoy some school in summer. I've been taking that week very slowly due to the holidays and a death in the family. It's our second week...

Need some help with math, English, and pre-adolescence!

My 11 year old son (just turned 11 a couple of months ago) recently expressed to me that math and English make him feel frustrated and sad. He doesn't like math drill because the concept of trying to get faster at it makes him nervous/anxious. I thought the point of drill was to get better at the ma...

Re: CTG - Weeks 8 & 9

I have made lentil soup many times, but my kids are not fans. At all. So, we skipped making it and instead emphasized how much more ridiculous it seemed to US that he traded his birthright for that, of all things! Lol!

Re: Math drill

MFW recommends that you drill only those concepts that have been fully taught and practiced if using Singapore. Specifically, "introduce x1, x2, and x3 after finishing 2A, x4 after finishing page 25 of 2B, and the rest of the cards after page 90 of 3A." This information is written on the math flashc...

Re: Adventures in US History plus other Timelines

Another thing to consider is that you will be studying lots of other countries when you get to ECC. It would be much easier, in my opinion, to fit in the other countries' histories then, rather than try to teach them along with Adventures in US History. It might just be a bit much for you and for th...

Re: Adventures in US History plus other Timelines

Wow, that's quite an undertaking! Since Charlotte Mason thought history is best learned chronologically, I'd definitely add the other countries' timeline pieces on the same timeline as the US events. Now, whether you choose to stop here and there to teach what was going on in the other countries whi...

Re: Need help fitting it all in!

I would encourage you to keep trying. Adjusting attitudes will always be a thing; I think that's just part of life-skills. How old are your kids? One thing that has helped me this year is alternating "fun" subjects with "work" subjects. We don't go in the order listed in the TM. Our day goes more li...

Also, I just wanted to say thank you to those of you who've replied so far. It gets lonely sometimes as a homeschool parent, so things like this are such an encouragement to read! Even though we have a pretty healthy, busy social life, I still feel like I go long stretches without talking to other h...

Re: New School Year Hopes and Dreams

Why did you begin homeschooling and is it the reason you continue? We began homeschooling because my husband worked far away and only had weekdays off, no weekends. I realized our child would rarely see him anymore when he started K. Private school was also very expensive and I'd probably need to g...
