Re: 2 income homeschoolers using Adventures?

Thanks to everyone who replied. Rest assured this has been taken to prayer and my husband and I have extensively studied the letters of Paul, and their historical context. Not everyone's situation is the same. I recall even the Hazell's had mom working and dad teaching. I should add that while my hu...

2 income homeschoolers using Adventures?

I was wondering if anyone could offer advice on how they make homeschooling with MFW work for them when both parents work. With a lot of prayer I applied to seminary and was accepted. It is a 2 year program with mostly online courses, 4 week-long trips out of state, and average 20-hour a week local ...

Re: Singapore Math lesson plans

Both books contain answers for the textbooks and workbooks for the levels they're written for. The home instructor's guide also contains in-depth, step-by-step lesson plans. For the younger grades, I feel it is unneccessary, because the textbooks themselves teach very simply and clearly with words a...

Yes, that's exactly right. And each child continues doing your choice of Language Arts and Math at his or her level.

Re: First and second grade

Adventures does not include language arts and math. You could use Adventures for both children (each child needs his own set of student sheets), add 2nd grade language arts and math for your older child, and use just the phonics and math from LGS for the 1st grader since you already have it (but buy...

I think many families have done exactly that. You can adapt the lessons in Adventures as needed for your 1st grader. Congratulations on the new baby :)

Re: Which curriculum should I simultaneously teach a 3 & 4 yo?

Hi! I think it would be best to do the Pre K with your two children, and simply follow with K for both whenever you are done with it. The repetition will be good for both of them, and MFW PreK is so much fun! You don't really need to follow the same schedule as public school, feel free to make it wo...

Re: Adventures for 2nd & 4th Grade?

I would go with ECC, as I think you'd need to add more history and science to Adventures to make it enough for a 4th grader. Your children will not have to do any of the advanced assignments for ECC, and your 2nd graders can use the Complete Book of Animals as a fun science supplement. You can also ...

Re: Have you heard about My Father’s World Vision Weekend?

Oh yes! I did have the two things confused. Going to Rolla would be a nice trip one day :) In the meantime we will just remain prayerful about God's next steps for our family. Thank you for your prayers. Our daughter had a better night last night, though she still woke up once or twice. I let a Chri...

Re: Have you heard about My Father’s World Vision Weekend?

We've been wanting to do this since last year, but our daughter has a lot of sleep issues. Thankfully she seems to be on the verge of a breakthrough. When she is sleeping consistently through the night for a few months, we would be willing to leave her with family while we went away for this weekend...

Re: How do you work toward independence before high school?

Thank you for the words of wisdom, and a few years ago I would have agreed with you about not looking too far ahead. In my case, I am almost 48 with an almost 6 year old daughter, and wife to a husband of 51 who has a pacemaker yet still works to support us. My husband and I both feel it is God's wi...

How do you work toward independence before high school?

Hi! So far, my youngest has done great with the new Preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten, and is chugging away with First Grade. What I'm wondering is, I know that the high school guides are intended to be done independently. How do you prepare your child for that, when the family learning cycle is so...

Re: Cooking with Young Children

We have truly enjoyed making all the recipes in AAAT, VOD, and GCA :) It has added a lot of fun and togetherness to our days. I love having that reminder in my teacher manual to include my child in the kitchen. My now first grader enjoys cooking and baking with me. Last week, we made some cinnamon m...

Maybe get the Home Instructor's guides for Singapore Math? Those definitely have a lot of teacher guidance. Unless you've already tried that. Otherwise I second the Math Lessons for a Living Education. It seems to have an engaging and straight-forward format.

Perhaps consider Teaching Textbooks? It has an online subscription that teaches for you and grades the material, and an e-book workbook. Or you can get it in CDrom and printed workbook format. There There are placement tests on their official website so you can see which levels are appropriate for y...

Re: Handwriting in 1st

You're welcome :) Boys can tend to take longer developing those fine motor skills. My oldest child, also my only boy, really hated writing at that same age. On top of everything else, he is left-handed :~ It took him time to grow into it. In hindsight I wish I had done more of those activities with ...

Re: Handwriting in 1st

How old is he? He may just need time to grow into fine motor skills. Have you done the tactile activities like the ones suggested in K, such as using his finger to write in salt, a stick to write in dirt or sand, making letters out of clay? Writing on a white board with dry erase markers, on the gro...

Re: What to do next?

This will be the last year your children do the same guide. You do ECC with both children for the upcoming year. The 8th grader uses 7th/8th grade supplement plus will need to do 7th grade science as recommended by MFW. Each student continues using their own level language arts and math. The followi...

Re: Finishing “on time”

Think of it this way. If you started a child in MFW at grade 7, for example, they would only do ECC and CTG before high school. In other words, it is perfectly okay if your children do not complete the whole history cycle in elementary and middle school, because they will get in-depth coverage of all...

Re: Skipping kindergarten

It's possible for a 5 year old to be ready for 1st, especially with a sibling so close in age, and having sat in on K with the older sibling. I'd say go ahead and do 1st with both children. There may yet come a point in the future where you have to slow things down for the younger child while contin...

Re: Loving MFW K but concerned about MFW 1st

I haven't yet, but how about taking it at a slower pace? Like taking a year and a half to two years to finish 1st, so that he will be 7 or 7.5 by the time he gets to 2nd grade. The slower pace may give him the time he needs to grow into it, and be less stressful.
