Re: new with questions about the next few years

Or if you aren't against tv watching for educational purposes ( :) ) you could let them watch Liberty's Kids. (I think it's still on instant streaming on Netflix and you can find it at most libraries as well.) My children love Liberty Kids and it does a great job giving historical information at a c...

Re: Conflicted on when to start MFWK

I love FIAR (all of them) and MFWK. I could offer a different approach to consider. :) Maybe do both? But over the next 2 years for a Pre-K and K year. Maybe one week do a week of MFWK, the next week pick a FIAR book that possibly corresponds to the science topic/letter/whatever you learned in K. (O...

OT: Helping Parents while Homeschooling

Hi, All - Has anyone helped care for an elderly parent while homeschooling young children? If so, could you share a few pointers? Thanks, Melissa B. Hi, I helped care for my grandmother for "short" spells last year. The first go around, we tried to school in the mornings and then go to her house to...

Re: When to teach sight words?

I definitely am going to check out that first link, Crystal. The thought of sight words contributing to dyslexia at first sounds sort of "conspiracy theory"-ish but you know...my daughter had no signs of dyslexia til after public school PreK and K where they didn't teach any phonics--just sight word...

We tried doing it. Kids were all excited. The first person we gave it to never brought it back. Not sure he understood the concept. :) Oh well.

Re: Thinking ahead through the multi-age family cycle...

Oh, I misunderstood the question. ;) Your 3 year old will remember bits and pieces of the years your other child is doing if he is around during school time. (Sometimes I tried to do school while little ones napped so they might not be there.) You could try to include him in some of the read alouds,...

Re: If you added a country to ECC...

We "added" Latvia. We didn't really do school with it though, other than looking at it on a map and globe. We went there on a family mission trip for 2 weeks and considered that learning about it enough to consider it school. :)

Re: Need ideas for activities during school when curr. is do

Well, today went pretty terribly, to be honest. Not the schedule's fault. Just lots of bad moods all around. I gave my oldest a list of things she could choose to do independently while I worked with my other two and my son had such a bad attitude that school took until lunch time with him. (he is o...

Thank you! I appreciate all the information. Lots to think about. :)

Need ideas for activities during school when curr. is done

Thanks so much! Reading through that has been extremely helpful! Even though I don't want to, I think I am going to have to implement school hours. I am finding that my children mainly argue about doing school work because it interferes with "their" time. And the ones who begrudgingly comply, are on...

I just try to keep in mind topics we will study ever, lol, and pick up books at thrift stores when I see them. I have banned myself from the library. Re: Need some encouragement. My child is not enjoying school

Maybe you could just do fun things from the K program for awhile and not worry about letters, numbers, phonics for a few months. Maybe by waiting, she will have matured in fine motor skills and will begin to enjoy those other things? You could just focus on the Bible and science fun stuff and read b...

Re: ECC before Adventures

We did ECC in 2nd and Adventures in 3rd. Our reasons were because we wanted a missional/cultural focus for our DD as we were preparing to go overseas to do missions. Re: How do you run your home?

This is a great thread! To the OP, i tried emealz. I really enjoyed it. My husband, who is more picky, did not. One thing that worked well for us when we did it, was 5 minute pick ups. After each meal, the kids did a 5 minute pick up in a room of my choice. This way, things stayed relatively clean. ...

Thanks, Julie. That may help. When my husband isn't working, I know I'm going to have him help me with it. He knows all the Level 1 stuff already so maybe he can help me with that. I have no idea if my mouth is making the right shape or not. ;)
