Waltzing Matilda

"Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda, you'll come a waltzing matilda with me..." We found a great rendition of this song on YouTube sung by Slim Dusty. Many Australians consider it their national anthem. We had a lot of fun learning the words, and figuring out what things were... such as a billibong,...

Teppanyaki

We took our oldest 2 sons (9,7) out for lunch at a Japanese restaurant in town. They were offering a lunch special serving teppanyaki style. What a fun experience! We sat around a large skillet (large dining room table size) and watched a Japanese chef skillfully cook our food. He threw knives in th...

Movie/Video ideas

My kids and I enjoyed watching the movie, "The gods Must Be Crazy". It's an old movie with a lot of slapstick comedy in it. You meet the Bush people of the Kalahari Desert. As for all media, I advise previewing it first. There are some shooting scenes with machine guns and bazookas, to name a bit of...

Re: Cheese!

At our local Trader Joes (grocery store in CA) we found a lot of authentic cheeses from France (and from many other parts of the world). I bought 3 different kinds and we had a cheese tasting experiment with our family. It was fun to experiment with new flavors and to know that they were made in Fra...

Amazon River Adventure Story

I found an excellent book in the adult shelves at the library called "Paddle to the Amazon" by Don Starkell. It a 2 year journal of a dad who paddled with his son down the Mississippi River from Canada, along the Gulf of Mexico, down to South America, up the Orinoco River and then down the Amazon Ri...

"Oh Canada"

We found the National Anthem of Canada on YouTube and learned all the words. It's a great song and it's one of the few National Anthems with English words. We sung it all year long, and especially enjoyed singing along during the Winter Olympics.

Re: Week 12

A fun state bird book: " United Tweets of America " by Hudson Talbott (50 state birds, their stories, their glories) A public school friend of mine saw this book on her Scholastic book list and got it for me as a gift because she knew we were studying states and birds. The "Big Bird" (a bald eagle) ...

Abe Lincoln

When we read that Abraham Lincoln was 6 ft 4 inches tall, we decided to "measure" him on our doorpost. We taped a line at 6 ft. 4 in. for Abe, placed his name there, and then measured each other and added our own mark. It really brought "Abe to life" as my kids realized how tall he was. Next week, I...

"More Than Moccasins"

Thanks for recommending this book: "More Than Moccasins".
My 2 boys loved making pueblos and indian clothes this last week! The ideas and supplies were simple and fun. We could have spent days doing all the projects... but we'll save that for future years of learning.
