anyone use IEW with the high school programs?
My oldest will be starting AHL soon. He has been using IEW for writing, and it's really been helping a lot. I hate to switch since he's been doing so well with it, but I also don't want things to be totally crazy for him when he starts AHL, since it contains its own writing program. Does anyone use...

Re: Thoughts on US to 1877....
Lucy, thanks :) That's pretty much what we are doing, we just move the next Monday to Friday to make it work. We are really enjoying week 3 literature. The kids had a blast with the Eleanor Rigsby comparison. Not only did they read the lyrics, but listened to the song (which they liked the music of,...

Thoughts on US to 1877....
Just thought I'd pop in and update how it's going. We finally got going. We are on week 2 of US to 1877 with both of our children now. We opted to combine them so our DD 14 is doing US to 1877 first instead of AHL. Her older brother has done AHL and WHL. Well, on week two, we are so far, so good. Ha...

Re: Checking high school work
Because our schedule is nuts with cross country, football, boy scouts and american heritage girls, not to mention, National Home School Honor Society, and volunteering, we give them till Sunday evening to get the whole week done. If it isn't done by that time, the following week they don't get phone...

S/O Grammar question
My upcoming 8th grader did All in One English last year. Prior to that he did ILL for 2 years. We have done some formal grammar in elementary years, CM in the middle school years, and then formal grammar in 7th grade. He worked on All in One independently except when he needed my help which was not...

Re: Getting Ready to Start and Already Discouraged lol
Sniff, sniff... I'm crying with you! You have had a rough time for quite a while. Your family will be okay! God can fix anything. I promise. By the way, it is okay to scream. I find stuffing my face in a pillow with my door shut, giving a good scream into the pillow, followed by crying out to the Lo...

Getting Ready to Start and Already Discouraged lol
We'll be doing AHL and K this year. ODD is eager to start, so I handed her the box of AHL and told her to start, investigate, dive in. Okay, take my suggestions for what they are worth, which isn't much! I'm sharing my experience as it relates to a similar situation. Not saying you did the same thi...

Re: Reverse order for high school? (US1/2 THEN AHL, WHL)
I know you will be happy with AHL, it is an incredible year! My son got so much out of it, and to be honest, I wanted to do it with DD this year. She originally wanted to do it. But, she asked to do this with her brother. She has an amazing gift of compassion and love. She is willing to do and capab...

Reverse order for high school? (US1/2 THEN AHL, WHL)
My dd15 (sophomore) is just finishing WHL. LOVED it (well, I did...she probably just liked it ;) ). We have US1 for her for next year. I have an upcoming 9th grader who has yet to study American History in depth...little snippets here and there and some early american with HOD RtR). He REALLY wants...

Anyone here NOT use Apologia for 7th grader?
It just hit me a few weeks ago that it would be time soon to check out the 7th/8th grade recommendations and supplements for my DD. Of course, I've been checking into Apologia online and at fair and just can't see her (or I ;-) doing this. Has anyone else done something different when they get here...

Re: A little OT - Biology
Yes, just have them diagram and label all of the organs etc.... then write it up a lab report. Documentation is key! We've done rabbits, deer, opossum, raccoon, squirrel! We also do all of the apologia labs, but these are extra practice!

Re: Private School (Abeka) to Homeschool (ADV) & Phonics/Mat
Just my two cents, but I see no reason not to switch to the MFW suggested items. Singapore far surpasses abeka in fostering understanding, and the PLL is just more fun and less busywork. The biggest difference would be PLL vs Abeka; Abeka teaches the formal terminology, whereas PLL teaches the conce...

Re: Has MFW Successfully Prepared Students Who Went To Colle
Hello and welcome! When we began with MFW, I too was worried about college prep. In fact, I posted on many, many forums, took some flack from a dear friend who said from looking at the catalog, MFW was too "light". Well, we chose to go with it and 4 years later are very happy. Our son has thrived ac...

Don't need advice, no complaining, just a happy post and sharing! Due to an injury, I've had ample time to pour over the MFW US to 1877 materials. Talk about an exciting year! Re: US History to 1877 questions....
At my house, I guess each day is different, but in general I expect about an hour a day per class. Some usually take more and might be finished in the evening (math, English) and some usually take less (French, Biology, Bible), and History is probably right in the middle? I think this is it! Becaus...
