Re: Subjects Covered
Well, at that level something like "Economics" looks very different than high school. It would be incorporated into something else, and not a stand alone subject at that level. Are you sure that isn't what is required for the 4 years of high school? But, as far as; reading, writing, literature, hist...

Re: How to simplify the curriculum?
I am hoping someone else chimes in, as it has been a LONG time since I had to consider this... but, aren't the advanced assignments for older students? I realize ECC is for 3-8th grade, so, it just seems to me like an advanced assignment would be more for the 6-8th grade level of that range?? I know...

Re: book basket in a small town?
I think it just depends on your library. Ours is a small town. Under 7000, but we have a GREAT children's library. Better than many in cities. AND, keep in mind, while book basket is great, and adds to the curriculum, you COULD do it without it at all. Many missionary families do! Also, our children...

Re: How do you keep up on school and house work??
How do you keep up on school AND house work? You mean I am supposed to? ;) Seriously, I also work, more than one job right now. One that came about when Mom went in the hospital last November, and has continued since her passing in January. It paid her a little, but so far I haven't done that. (She ...

Just thought I would mention, for the VHS ones, they allow you to trade up at a discounted rate. Might be something to look into...
And, sometimes as conventions they discount them even more. There used to be a few on Netflix, but I didn't look to see if that was still the case.

OT-Has anyone used 'Christian Missionaries to Know Lapbo
The topic on another thread about doing an ADV mini study got me wondering about what we will study this summer. On currclick.com I found the 'Christian Missionaries to Know Lapbook' by Hands of a Child. It includes a Missionaries Project Pack on Gladys Aylward, Amy Carmichael, David Livingstone, a...

Re: MFW and parts of speech - and mandatory testing
Mine have always done fine on standardized testing, above peers, and strong even without formal work in those areas. The weakest area was grammar, but it was still acceptable, and easily explained and understood by me, since I knew we would be working on that later.

Re: Considering MFW & Afraid, Plus Dad's sick
We are behind this year, partly because of time with my Mom who was going through cancer treatment (lots of doctor appts, lots of tests, etc, many of them over 2 hours away), then 7 weeks in the hospital, where I was with her most of the time. My girls learned a lot during that time. We learned more...

Re: Anyone do afternoon school? (Or any other modified sched
We do school in afternoon, and have for several years now. It works for us. I work as a programmer in the mornings from home, and they do chores and independent work. One reason we changed was that before, when I did school first, and then work, we would be doing some concept, and I felt like, oh, j...

Re: Scheduling Independent Work for 12yo EXP-1850
I agree that much of MFW is done together, reading for Bible, much of history (although not all when you have two that are several years apart), etc. However, I have them work on math, memory verses, English, writing, history notebook pages, science notebook pages, spelling (using Spelling power lis...

Re: Scheduling Independent Work for 12yo EXP-1850
I have started using wet erase markers to make a semi-permanent list, and then dry erase to fill in and checkoff. It is quick and easy to use. They also get a weekly assignment sheet though, that has all independent work, pages etc. listed. The white board includes chores and assignments in a more g...

Re: After week 13 in ADV ...
Can I just say, that to me Adventures is a "don't miss it" kind of year! It was our first with MFW, and right after a year of a different American History. However, it was different, it was pleasant, it was GREAT. And, yes, those State Sheets can be taken to Dr. appt., or on a trip, or any number of...

Singapore Math Books ?
I am currently using Singapore Math but I am wondering does anyone use the Intensive Practice books or Challenging Word Problems Book? Science - Supplies
I've really enjoyed having science kits that I had purchased for my older kids ages ago. The only purchases that I needed for science were consumable items such as fruit, etc. I would like to have the same set up for ECC! There are options for science kits for the apologia texts so I'm not too conc...

Re: structured art
I started college as an Art major (I am now a programmer, so you can see how far I have diversified), however, my experience there was that I had a sort of Thomas Kinkade style (this was before the days of his work being everywhere, and well known). My instructor didn't like it. Said art wasn't supp...

another thing to keep in mind, with Singapore they do continue to build, move to a slightly different skill set, then come back around to the original on a higher level, so you WILL see if they are retaining as you continue to go through.

Rachel Yoder books are fun chapter books that we have enjoyed. I think they could be age appropriate. Then there are animal stories by Bill Wallace. The BoxCar Children the originals tend to be pretty good (I think that is the first 20 in the series, after the originals the author is actually differ...

WS - Still recommended if we're not using Language Lessons?
Is Writing Strands complimentary to ILL or can it be used on it's own? We're using BJU English and started that this year. I'm not sure I like the writing projects in it yet. They go via chapter, so there's a chapter of grammar, then a chapter of writing with review of grammar during writing projec...

Yes, thanks much to all for the helpful info. I think I need to get real with dd about why she is behind. Saxon 8/7 How long each day???
How long does your dc using this math take each day to do a whole lesson? (This is assuming that your dc is doing the whole lesson and not following the MFW lesson plans. Just trying to get a gauge to see if my dd is taking too long. Thanks! I am curious about this. We are trying to follow MFW plan...

I think part of my panic with this year is that 7th is a step up! I think at first they might even suggest not doing math? Is that right?? I would have to track down my manual, and it is packed away in the attic....
But, it does get easier / shorter as you go, you will get there.
