Re: ADHD, Gifted but Anxious

Thanks for your insights, Julie! I like the idea of being in the middle of ECC when we add in the twins. I'm sure the routine would be helpful as we fold them into the mix. I appreciate you and Tammie taking the time to give me input and encouragement!!

Re: ADHD, Gifted but Anxious

Thanks for your thoughts, Tammie! For now, the school is sending home language arts work for the afternoon, but if we pull him, we'll use MFW ECC, and add LA and Math to be a full curriculum. We will make a final decision in the next three weeks. It is good to know that ECC is written to do two week...

Re: MFWK with an almost 6yo reader

My oldest was 5 when we started MFW-K, and he was already reading on a 2nd or 3rd grade level. Although we didn't use the phonics, or the math, we LOVED having MFW-K to guide us through our weeks, giving us structure to what we were studying. The kids learned SO much about the world around them, abo...

Library for K!

I decided to try out our neighboring town's library for our first unit of MFW K. A nice, big new building. Not a single ONE of the recommended children's books or non-fiction books were there, out of a dozen choices! Not even ONE! 8O Any suggestions? (aside from ordering the literature package) Aww...

Re: Need some encouragement. My child is not enjoying school

When my oldest was 5 and our twins were 3, I often needed to "buy some time" in the morning for me to get ready for our day. I was overwhelmed and sometimes sick, struggling with chronic pain, etc. so I'd let them watch some educational tv shows in the morning while I pulled myself together. Then I'...

Re: NEST videos for Adventures

Ooooh, I'm going to check and see if our school district has a subscription to that Discovery Channel's United Streaming library! Thanks for mentioning that, Cayce. We have a wonderful public library, and I'm thankful that they have most of the NEST history videos, however you never know if they'll ...

Readiness - Sorting disobedience from readiness issues

Not enjoying our 1st few days (also, ADD suspicions?) We tried to start of our first homeschool day last week and it went horribly. So we started "again" this week and just finished our 3rd day today (MFW day 2). My son is 5.5 and doing 1st grade. His focus is so much worse than it used to be. So e...

Re: lesson plan book

For K and 1st grades I used the free planner that Lakeshore Learning gave out with a $10 purchase. I loved it! It was about the size of a spiral notebook. Calendar pages were in the front (month-at-a-glance style, with lines for writing the day's appts on), followed by 40 week-at-a-glance two-page s...

Re: Handwriting--How far to push??

Wow, thanks everyone for the great suggestions. Now, to decide whether to encourage him to work on one area at a time (e.g., fitting letters between the lines, getting his hand below his writing, etc.) or whether to sit with him and work stroke by stroke. Hmmm....must pray for wisdom.

Re: Preschool or K for my son? HELP!

I agree that calling the MFW office would be good; they are so helpful, and they have excellent advice. Another option you might mention when you call is doing K slowly, over two years, taking a nice, leisurely pace. Just a thought. :-)

Senet Game - CTG

Ok, so I am super thankful that the game board in included in the Student Sheets. I have to admit that we are still LOST as to how to play it. Does anyone have more details on the instructions (or even pictures) to help? I haven't seen the game board from the CTG pages, but we made one from another...

Re: At what age do you start teaching cursive?

I purchased Peterson Handwriting's 2nd grade homeschool set for my son. I went ahead and got it because my son needed to stop some bad printing habits before they became more ingrained. Mr. Nelson recommended the transition to cursive happen before they start experimenting with it on their own . Thi...

Re: OT-Good breakfasts w/o eggs?

Thanks so much for these great ideas! The egg substitute ideas for recipes are great too. I haven't tried any of those before. I'm looking forward to mixing it up a bit with these new breakfasts over the next couple weeks to see if we can make it to lunch with only one snack. I was thinking, with th...

Re: Continued reading instruction?

Thank you ladies for your comments! Regarding phonics, we went all the way through a phonics program. There were, however, MANY lessons that we breezed through. I'd still read through the script, making sure to emphasize the phonics rule, but we didn't spend much time on the lessons he seemed to "ha...

Re: ADV in First Grade?

Hi, Kate, This year our twins are doing MFW-K, and our oldest is doing a mish-mash of things for 1st--I'm mostly trying to make it a strong Bible year, like MFW-1, so we can jump back into MFW with ADV next year. Assuming the twins continue to do well with learning to sound out the CVC words, I plan...

Re: Am I doing the right thing with my young boy K'er?

Heather, it sounds like you've already gotten some great advice. We had our boy/girl twins when our ds had just turned 2. I don't have two sets of twins, but having one set, I wanted to just chime in with a few thoughts. First, give yourself lots of grace!!! You don't want to have a pity party, but ...

Re: 6.5 yo struggling with math facts

Thanks for your speedy replies! Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of slow them down at this age just because of lack of rote memory skills and speed. I'm not sure I understand. Don't slow down just because he isn't memorizing the facts? I thought he needed to learn the math facts before going on. If he h...

Re: Good ways to collect/store materials for future years?

When I was organizing MFWK last year, I knew I'd be doing it again, so I wanted to remember the best resources I found for each week to minimize having to reinvent the wheel the second time around. I did three things to try to keep track of resources. First I made a manila folder for each week. I pu...
