Re: Kindergarten or first grade?

Whatever you decide, I highly recommend you say she is in Kindergarten. (Cover up the words "first grade" on the books, and say she's in kindy.) I messed that one up here when I started my ds young - he actually did fine academically through kindy, 1st, ADV, and most of ECC (we're behind, haven't fi...

Re: Taking days off? Shorter school week?

I like schooling year-round for that reason. If I am feeling burnt out, we take a break. If the kids get too long of a break, we have trouble getting back. We don't have any set schedule here, just we do school every day that we can. I was having a hard time with 6mo baby in December....so we took a...

Re: What to do during a 5 month gap?

When we had a gap (before ADV), we did Apologia Zoology 1, and the Pearables book on Responsibility for Boys (you would obviously do the girl version), along with our math and LA. We also worked on typing, art, and music. We also did some extra cleaning lessons, so chores would go smoother when we w...

One more POV re: student sheets for ECC

I bought my Ker a passport, student sheets, and flag stickers. She participated with some of the ADV and really loved it (hands-on part), but she couldn't yet write, so we ended up with a lot of wasted paper. We were also using the MFW preschool program for her, and she wasn't doing any other workb...

Bible in Kindergarten

After looking over the sample pages for kindergarten, the only place I saw bible mentioned was on day to were you read and discuss 3 separate verses on day 2 and 1 additional verse on day 4. Is this the typical ways bible is handled? Does anyone do anything differently or having any tips or suggest...

How to teach K with ECC?

My older children (grades 2nd and 4th) will be doing ECC this year. My third child will be using K this year. We used ADV this year and she loved participating in some of the work. She didn't enjoy story time though and she was unable to complete many of the worksheets, as she couldn't yet write, b...

I can do all things...

I saw that there are videos that go along with this book. Has anyone used them?? Are they worth the money?? Thanks!! My ds and I LOVE the DVDs! I bought mine off of ebay, don't remember how much for, but they were definitely worth it here! He is maybe about 1/3 done with the book, and it's been so ...

Re: I Can do All Things Questions

My 8yo loves/loved ICDAT, too. We are on week 8 of ECC and continue to do ICDAT on days when we have time to spend. The only way we get it done, though, is with the DVD's. There is no way he'd be doing any good at it w/out the DVDs. I believe we ordered our DVDs on ebay. We did order the set of supp...

Re: Never just one?????

Same here, Misty, and my dc are more spaced than yours. I DID plan it out so I have to only teach 2 programs at a time - I don't want to do K, 1st, AND a 2-8. There will be 1 year that I have the 4 olders in the cycle together...but I figured that out before Simon was born, so he will most likely be...

Re: New and need hand holding

Quite possible! I have to confess, though, I don't remember much of what is was like, but I know it's possible, as I've done it twice. I currently have 8yo (as of today), 5yo, 3.5yo, 2yo, and 1mo. We've done MFWK, 1st, and ADV, the first 2 of which were done with an infant right along-side. It must ...

Re: What does your day look like in ECC?

Thank you. That will help me alot in planning, if I know they are accurate-ish. I just don't want to always be needing MORE time than is allowed. We are finishing ADV tomorrow, having a baby next week, and while we are in recovery/find-new-normal mode I am hoping to make a MOTH schedule for when we ...

Re: Kindergarten

With my 2 "younger" beginners, we started while they were still 4, and took it slow - mostly just as they wanted to - and K was great! We went so slow with the first that I did scrunch it up at the end to get done, when he turned 6. At my house, slow and not steady has been great for K. ;) (stresses...

Re: magazine subscription

We like the Early Edition of God's World News, too [now called God's Big World]. We also like Your Big Backyard - the young kid's version of Ranger Rick. Ranger Rick we don't like - too much evolution/movies/Halloween/save the earth/etc. But we've been getting Your Big Backyard for several years and...

We are loving Adventures this year, too. But if you really want, you COULD do ECC. I just kept telling myself we'd be there next year. :)

Great 1st day of Adv!

We jumped in and started Adv today. I think I'm going to like studying our country - listening to the track of the Pledge of Allegiance nearly made me cry. 8| For math, we've been working on our math facts, so I gave him the math-window addition chart from 1st grade and had him do it - he did it qui...

Re: I need to settle down - advice?

Thank you. It is mostly my expectations, but I also know that dh loves it when I am on top of things. He doesn't want me to ask him to help on the weekends, nor does he really want me to spend all Saturday cleaning (and neither do I). All we do is: load and unload the dishwasher, sweep under the tab...

Re: Some book suggestions?

That is a GREAT idea of how to choose picture books. I have ALWAYS felt so lost going into the picture book section of the library. Like I said, he does like picture books a lot - he just reads them too fast. I never intended for him to start reading these "older" books. I actually started with Stua...

Re: Some book suggestions?

Thanks so far! Yes, I know he can/should read books below his reading level. He does. I could use good suggestions on those, too. He just reads so MUCH, that I can't possibly have enough books on-hand for him if they're all picture books. :) We get all of the math suggestions from the 1st grade TM. ...
