Re: I need playing outside/exercise suggestions for my 5yo D

We do push-ups, jumping jacks, etc., but that only goes so far. We've started them running on a treadmill (age 5), and that is a good energy releaser (we live in the midwest, so we don't go out for MONTHS during the winter)! Would a small trampoline be fun? Those are inexpensive! We live in the city...

Hands-on - Homemade and inexpensive

If you could have only one.... Re: If you could have only one.... Math Manipulative, what would it be. I am using Singapore math. I friend told me that I have to have Base 10 blocks. I never used anything other than my fingers, and I wanted opinions. Also, what is the best place to get whatever you...

Got the K & 1st Kits!!! SO happy!

I just wanted to share my enthusiasm. We have been trying different curriculum & activities for OVER two years. We've gotten so many things that just die out, aren't fun, and feel so stale. Until now. My 5 y.o. son and 7 y.o. daughter have been waiting excitedly for their K and 1st MFW kits to come...

Re: MFW K accelerated pace... am I doing the right thing?

My experience...for what it is worth... My son (yes, a boy) taught himself to read at 4. He also has an incredible auditory memory (they've "run out" of verses to do with him at Awana). We started out speeding through K, but I decided midway through to slow down! Again, when we began 1st (he was sti...

Re: Should we switch back?

I was noticing the same thing! I was just telling DH today that I think I prefer the Book Basket better, since we tend to go through our Read-Alouds quickly. I don't like telling the kids, "No more today." But, then I hate being "off schedule". We've already read quite a few of the ones for the next...

Re: Should we switch back?

:-) I saw the pages on your blog! Thanks! I am loving reading with the kids (with SL), but I like to check things off lists, and there's no way we could keep up! I would also love to stick with 1st for my 5-year-old to complete her phonics, and then do it over again in the future with the others! Th...

Re: Workboxes...anyone implementing them with ADV?

We use a modified system (I do own the book). Last year we used Sterilite drawers (3 in a set from WalMart), but I just used 6 drawers for each kid. We were doing K, so that was part of the reason, and 12 just seemed like overkill when you aren't using text-books or work-texts. Also, we did Bible an...

Tips for First Grade?

Hello! I'll be using 1st grade in the fall and just have a few ?s for you who have done this already - (I did check the 1st grade section of the board, there are a lot of great ideas there too!) - what extra things did you find helpful to have? I'm not talking about the deluxe package, but other th...

Re: Need help! K or 1st Grade

I won't add much since you've gotten so much good advice! My son turned 5 in October, and we did K with him. He is not your usual boy...well, he does like mud and bugs, but he taught himself to read at 3, and has a very good auditory and visual memory. Still, I am glad we did K first. He now wants t...

MFW Kindergarten Reading ?

I am really interested in using MFW for my daughter for Kindergarten next year, but my dd is already reading and we have already started a phonics program that we love. Does this mean that MFW K would not be a good fit for her? We just finished MFW K with my son who was reading (not fluently, but w...

Re: Saxon vs Teaching Textbooks?

Just my two cents (as a homeschooled kid who went through Saxon)... Do what works for you child! I HATED Saxon (sorry, I just did; I was sooooo bored!), but I did well on my SATs (760 if anyone cares, and I did better on the Verbal section). It is thorough. I could complete a problem and find answer...

I ordered the K worksheets and MFW 1 this week! We are excited to start! My son keeps asking when he gets "new school with the Bible reading"! Thanks for the help!

Re: About to buy MFW K - math and other questions

Hi! And welcome! We are doing MFW K this year, and we love it! We've tweaked it a bit to work for us, but it is great on its own! In the Deluxe version, the rods and book are included. We do them once a week. (It helps me to think of school in 2 sections: the unit-study and the phonics.) We have cho...

Re: I want to go to school! Discouraged, please help

I can totally understand and relate to the mommy guilt! My son is very social and loves people. Plus, the big yellow school bus is something he has been dying to ride! We are also one of 2 homeschooling families at church, so he hears from all the other kids about school. We try to make school fun. ...

Re: pick up the pace with MFW K??

We've "picked up the pace" with our son. We only do school 3-4 days a week (other commitments take up time on other days, so we didn't feel we needed to do more). Today he did all his worksheets in 10 minutes (days 1 and 2 of Lesson 9). We supplement with some things, but I do all the phonics exerci...

Re: Anyone switched from HOD to MFW????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi! I see the days we took off for the holiday make this a late response, but here goes: We switched after doing LHTH and LHFHG. The program was a bit "silly" for me. I don't like finger plays and dramatic stuff every day. It also seemed too "choppy" for me. I appreciate that everything is included ...

Re: Kindergarten schedule

Our schedule is: Bible Reading (our own personal book) Reading activity (reading, activities, etc. since the girls (3 and 18 months join us) Table time (youngest on a blanket to play; 3 year old at table, too) Calendar 100's chart Independent Work (my 3-yr. old loves workbooks, so she does some whil...
