Re: Substitute Books

Based on your concerns I would use them as read alouds with her. This can be a real sweet time between the two of you over a cup of tea. Then have her read them again later on her own.

Re: MFW with an "only" child?

I do MFW with an only. Works great. Keep going all the way through! Have her repeat ECC. She will get different things out of it each time she goes through the program! The second time it will be harder than the first time as a country report is required.

Son not getting place value-MFW 1st

We are into about 20+ days of MFW-1st and really like it! I was excited when my son began doing the long vowel activities in the workbook using the red pencil and he announced, "This is fun!" It became a game for him and has really been going well! However, he's really not grasping the concept of p...

Re: 8yo "bored" with curriculum

My daughter is not gifted but there were some great ideas in there that we can do to go along with the curriculum. LOVE those ideas. Another idea that I have is to include lapbooks for the read alouds. These are more indepth studies of the read alouds that are scheduled for ADV. Look on homeschoolsh...

Re: Adventure state sheets, disappointing and our fix

We are big foodies in our family! I found a wonderful way to "study" the states and incorporate the fun foodie side of our family. We are going to use the book American Grub: Eats For Kids From All Fifty States by Lynn Kuntz and Jan Fleming. Each recipe has a few fun facts about the state and then a...

Re: Good readers and read-alouds for 1st grade

Just so ya'll know, there is a series in the picture books that are the Little House books for younger readers. The series is called: My First Little House. My daughter loved them when she was in kindergarten and 1st grade. The series includes: A Little House Birthday, A Little House Prairie, Summer...

Re: Reading (as a subject)

The best way to learn reading comprehension is by narrating back to you what has been read. This takes much practice on your part to teach narration and to remember to do it. Sometime I forget to include narration in the day but usually always Dad will ask "what did you learn today?" at the dinner t...

nervous and excited with questions about 1st

I received MFW 1st in the mail yesterday. I'm excited because it looks interesting and fun. I'm looking forward to the strong Biblical component. My son is also excited and today was trying to hurry me up to get started doing school. When I asked him why he was so anxious he said because school is ...

Re: My Father's World-First Grade -- Share Your Experience

I cannot thank MFW and Marie and David Hazel enough for the wonderful 1st grade curriculum that grounds our children in the knowledge of the Word. Even though my daughter and I are both sicker than sick with a nasty spring cold, I went ahead and started Bible with her today. (She loves structure eve...

Re: Finger grip?

It is developmental. Keep using the finger grip until at least 1st grade or may be second. His grip will get better with time as the muscles in his hand and the parts of his brain that control this mature.

Re: How to stretch K curriculum when child knows letters/sou

Sorry, no time to read all the responses. I had my daughter do a unit study with each of the science units. We made "lapbooks" or "folders" for each of the themes. For the S unit we studied things about the sun and some of the other planets. We "studied" Van Gogh a little and colored a "Sunflowers" ...

Re: Bible notebook sub for 1st gr timeline?

Our home has almost 0 wall space as well. I knew that my daughter would need to have a timeline to help her put people and events in the right order. Re: First Day Tips?

I found a list of "God's Standards" that we have as our homeschooling "rules". Every morning we start our day by reviewing them. Most all problems fall under them. (1) Fear God and keep His commandments (Ecc 12:13) (2) Honor others above yourself (Rom. 12:10) (3) Do your work unto the Lord (Col 3:23...

Re: Pochohantos

For us the bigger issue with the movie is the blatant spirit worship and shamanism that is everywhere in the movie. The incorrect history is bad enough and then they added a ton of horrid pagan spirit worship.

Re: question about kindergarten calenders and 100 chart

We did MFWK last year. When we would miss the days on the calendar, my daughter would fill in the days. She likes to have everything in order and complete. It helped her a ton understand calendars, months, weeks, etc. I think it is pretty important to the learning process. As far as the bundles of s...

Re: Creation... dinosaurs...YE/OE... MFWK

I think that in part is because of how MFW works on so many things. They schedule Bible reading, but don't tell us how to interpret it. I also like how the FAQ on mfw's website says it "As a company we hold to a literal 6-day creation and this belief is reflected in our programs. We also understand...
