Astronomy

The astronomical society introduced us to a cool website for astronomy. It is http://www.stellarium.org/. It is a free open source planetarium on your computer showing you a realistic sky in 3D. My ds like to click on their favorite planet and then they can zoom in for a telescopic view and see the ...

RTR: Lots of pudding

What was I thinking? I bought pudding cups rather than boxes. We will be eating pudding for awhile!

I've actually found the supplies to be more manageable than this year. We left out several of the ECC art projects because of supply requirements. My husband has also been helpful at finding things around the house to illustrate the same principle for the science projects this year. We did not have ...

Encouragement for reluctant writers

In the past, I posted my frustration with my ds who was a reluctant writer from K-5 through 2nd grade. In 3rd grade he complained a little less. Today, I am happy to say that he is now in 4th grade and I can not get him to stop writing for his notebook page today! He keeps asking me to add more line...

I've enjoyed SOC

I've actually enjoyed SOC so far this year as well as my 4th and 2nd grade ds. We are on Week 8 now. I sometimes summarize it when appropriate if the text is long and involved.

Tower of Babel - Real life example

What a coincidence! This week we were studying about the Tower of Babel and that the reason the people dispersed was because God mixed up their languages, making it difficult for them to work together. Also this week we just happened to host some kids from a Tanzanian choir that knew only a few word...

I'm always on his team when we play the geography game and it is surprising how many countries and capitals he remembers. If I understand the rotation process, he can also learn it again 5 years from...

Adventure's presentations

Posted: Sun Oct 29, 2006 9:13 am I am so thankful for the Adventure's projects this year. We attend a "Share and Care" group each month where the children make a presentation to the group. Thanks to Adventures we have not been without any ideas. The first month my boys did a presentation on Indian ...

Birds website

Posted: Fri Nov 17, 2006 3:06 pm Here is a great website for Adventures' study on birds: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/VideoGallery.html#fig1 We had a lot of fun making our bird nests this week and watching the birds eat out of our soda pop bird feeder. My ds said the best pa...

There are some great books on this subject, "How and When to Tell Your Children about ...," for the parents and 4 age appropriate books to read to your children. I agree with the author that it is best to introduce them to the subject early when they are comfortable talking to you about it and befor...

I have to honestly say we don't have a written schedule either. I pretty much follow the sequence of the lesson plan each day and somehow we end about the same time every day, around 1 p.m.

ECC - Meeting people from all over the world!

We are doing ECC and this weekend we met people from 4 different countries. How? Last Spring my Bible Study friend asked that our group pray to help her place 2 foreign exchange students. My husband and I prayed about it and decided to host a German 16 year old girl named Julia. She has been here 3 ...

I checked with Kinkos and it is $36 to laminate the wall map!

I called Office Max and they could laminate my wall map for ECC and it was free since it was a free teacher Thursday. I dropped it off yesterday and I am picking it up today.

They also had the same map already laminated for around $12.

Yes, I did 7 and 5 year old boys together on Adventures. For the 5 year old's phonics, I used what I already had before finding MFW. On the history pages, I did the writing for the 5 year old and he drew the pictures. I also didn't push something if he was not interested in it but for the most part,...

Posted: Fri Sep 15, 2006 11:03 pm This is my first year with MFW and I love Adventures for all the same top 10 reasons. It can feel a bit overwhelming when your house is in the middle of renovation! What I have found that works is a chore chart.
