Re: ECC advanced?

Thanks, Ladies! Yes, that seems to be my plan so far. We're just finishing up week 2 but I haven't really done any of the advanced items so I guess I'll stick with that plan. Thanks for your thoughts!

Re: Adventure state sheets, disappointing and our fix

One way that we have added to the state sheets is to draw a picture and add it to the front of the state sheet based on the material we read on the back side. I love the "Draw Write Now" drawing books and as we have the whole set, I have my dd go through the books and located one or two additional p...

Re: love/hate feelings for science

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you! I love all the suggestions! I do need to start handing over more responsibility to the oldest in setting things up, I do need to start RELAXING about science instead of getting the "perfect" photo-op moment, I do need to start thinking outside the box and doing s...

Re: state cards

Thank you!! I think I'll take some of those suggestions. I'm thinking about putting a single hole punch on the left side and putting them all on a ring for easy flipping. I like the sorting idea with birds/flowers and keeping it handy for a trip to the zoo, etc.

We LOVE all of the book basket suggestions in Adventures, but one that we are currently enjoying is, "Skippack School." We highly recommend it!

Read Alouds for MFW 1

Hi there, I see that there are loads of books in the book basket for Science and Maths, are there any recommendations for other literature read aloud books for snuggle time on the couch? What do you all suggest adding in? Thanks heaps Sherid The Veritas Press catalog has a nice sampling of OT and N...

Oh, thank you! I hate to show things that are incorrect, especially at a young age. Later on it would make for good comparisons, I guess. LOL! Thanks again!

We just picked up "Old Mother West Wind" from the library this week and have begun reading it. The children keep asking for more..."one more chapter, please, Mommy!" Thanks again!! :)

Any suggestions for a Bible curriculum for pre-k/K

We want to be doing Bible reading and a family devotional type thing daily, but all my kids are 5 and under. So, I've had a tough time finding something that is on their level and incorporates the great stories of the Bible. (TRUE stories. ;) ) I remember someone recommending something on here, but...

Re: Preschooler's "big school" comments

When the topic comes up in our family we say, "God tells some mommies and daddies to send their children to 'building school' and tells other mommies and daddies to send their children to 'home school'--just like you! Isn't that exciting?!"

Re: Staying on task/balancing act

Yes, we often have the same challenges in our household at times. Great advice from the other ladies. Another MFW suggestion that we have recently begun is the white board list. I put each child's name on the board and list the items to complete--sometimes I give them two choices on the board and ot...

Re: 1st grade narration question

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions! I think I'm going to continue to be the scribe for her narrations so that she feels her summaries are valid, but then tell her we need to narrow it down to 4-5 sentences for her notebook. Then, if she wants to add more further she can do that during her "f...

Re: Making sure I am on the right track and teacher question

Hi Martie! I also have four kids at about the same ages and I, too, am a former public school teacher. I cannot say enough wonderful things about MFW. Each spring I begin to sweat and question if I should be doing one of the other 5,001 curriculum series that are out there. But I ALWAYS come full ci...

Re: Come Look With Me

Thanks, Ladies! We also just went through several storybook art books listed in the Veritas Press catalog under (K) for some other wonderful reads! Re: 1st Grade Timeline?

We just set up our timeline this week as well. I have very limited wall space and lots of little fingers, so we used the hallway going down the stairs into our basement/family room. I actually used blue painters tape and it is working out perfectly. Can't wait to start adding pieces!

Re: MFW Kinder Math Question

Dear Mary Lou, Please be ENcouraged and not DIScouraged today! Learning is a process, just like anything else in life, and is often not mastered with the first lesson. Instead of thinking in terms of mastery after each lesson, think in terms of mastery after a quarter, or semester, or year. I taught...

Art idea

1. go on a nature walk to collect colorful leaves and small twigs
2. using a piece of construction paper, trace your child's hand and arm to look like a bare tree
3. glue leaves on the top
4. hot glue the twigs in the trunk portion

Act out the water cycle

We used paper plates and cut out a big cloud and a big rain drop for each kid and then used a construction paper strip to make a band around their head and attached the cloud/rain drop to separate strips. We put a blue table cloth on the floor to symbolize a body of water (lake, etc). I read the box...

FREE scroll dowels!

When it came time to assembling the scroll, I was out of a car so we walked to our local art supply store. Unfortunately they didn't have any dowels to purchase...SOOO we got creative! On our walk back home we kept our eyes on the look out for large sticks that were about the right length, fairly st...
