Babies - Teaching while expecting, taking time off

Need encouragement for teaching while expecting a baby! Well I am expecting baby number 3 now in 10 days and I am homeschooling my daughter Morgan who is 7 and we are doing 1st grade and I have another daughter that will be 3 in December. I feel so guilty about it but i just feel like i don't have ...

I learned so much from reading this thread! I never thought about First and Adv being a "preview cycle" of history, but that makes so much sense. (I just figured we were doing a year of Bible and a year of US history, silly me.) And what a blessing that MFW protects my sensitive dd from all the wars...

Good Books - Seasons

Good books we used are: About the Seasons, by Sindy McKay (a "We Both Read" book, w/ a parent's page & child page) The Seasons, by Shannon Cannon (a phonics reader, too!) Babar's Busy Year, by Laurent de Brunhoff (just fun) Four Puppies, a Little Golden Book ( excellent if you can find it) Our Seaso...

I was raised on workbooks myself, and while I loved learning, I hated "school." I wanted the hands-on stuff, the interaction, the labs, etc. As a result, I am not an "activity type" now - I shudder over almost every project, but when we do them, I end up enjoying them immensely. I'm trying to let lo...

Weeks 31 & 32 (with Plants; Adding 3 Numbers)

Gluten-Free Clay Pot Because of my gluten intolerance, and never knowing how rice/bean flour is going to act for something like that, I purchased terra cotta air-dry modeling clay at the craft store. O.K., to be honest, I sent dh out for it at 9:00 last night. But it worked great! It was so much fu...

Week 2: Make a Jewish Calendar

Because of starting MFW1 on Sept 6th this year, our Day 6 falls on Sept 13th, which is Rosh Hashanah - or the Jewish New Year. Since this is the day that we are to make and post our Jewish Calendar, we're going to celebrate the holiday a bit. There was lots of ideas from google. We'll dip apples in ...

Hi, Christy! Welcome to the library-lovers club! :-) I never imagined that we would use the public library as much as we do. It truly is a God send!

There was a recent fun thread started by kugio, where we all shared what our typical trip to the library looks like!

WELCOME TO MY WORLD! :-) Homeschooling can be a roller-coaster for me, but I love it. Some days are rough as sandpaper, but other days are smooth as silk. I actually love reading the posts by the "power posters" out there when they admit that they've had a flop of a day, and realize that it happens ...

Ya'll will think I'm just braggin' --- but we have a 14 X 20 extra bedroom with a built-in desk, bookcases, a closet with shelves, and three big windows for natural light. One corner of it is "mommy's office" with my computer set-up and filing cabinet. The rest of it is school posters, calendar, bul...

Irmi -- What I plan on doing is following MFW1 recommendations with hands-on games, flash cards, etc., and the CBoM through at least the first half of the year. Then, MFW1 repeats all the subjects a second time to master the concepts and increase skill level and speed. I've got the schedule mapped o...

Explain "Information Books"

I just wanted to confirm my thoughts here. Are the books listed in the K booklist (pg. 118 of TM) under "Information books" just good books for general info about the topic, like instead of the encyclopedia or in addition to an encyclopedia type book? Can anyone offer some thoughts about having the...

Isn't that awesome?! I also love the fact that I am going to be teaching Bible history in MFW1 before we go into any kind of US or world history. Biblical history is the baseline. Here's what happened first -- God created. It's just genius the way this curriculum is laid out for us. Thanks so much f...

Jen, Thanks for your advice! Those are great ideas. Crystal, That's the feeling I kept getting -- she's only 5! Far too young to "push" IMO, but I didn't want to be holding her back, either. I will keep praying! She LOVES to bake/cook and would watch cooking shows while playing with her dishes all d...

A major heart-toucher happened to me this afternoon. I laid down after lunch "to rest my eyes for a minute" on the couch. I woke up 15 minutes later with my daughter sitting beside me silently reading Charlotte's Web and holding her stuffed pig - which is her current favorite stuffed animal. She loo...

Hi Christy! I applaud you for being willing to share that much in your first post! It's going to be great having you on this board. I would be SHOCKED if you feel like you're "cheating" your children by using light material after you've started MFW. I believe that you're going to love it as much as ...
