Re: Questions on writing curriculum

So, my oldest started MFW in 3rd grade. We did Writing Strands starting in 4th. We took a detour in 7th and 8th and did Essentials in Writing (she is dyslexic, and needed more step-by-step explanation). Then we did MFW for 9-11th. This summer she passed her College Composition CLEP - which included ...

Re: Try a New Schedule for 2017-2018

This would be fine, if we didn't have co-op that has deadlines. I find that I'd rather add in "catch-up" weeks when we need them. We know we take 1 week at Thanksgiving, and 2 weeks at Christmas. We generally don't take a Spring break, but we try to take an early family summer trip in early May. The...

Re: Combine Truthquest and MFW?

In Creation to the Greeks, the Bible is your History spine, so I feel like you're already making those connections between what God is doing and mankind's response. And even in Rome to the Reformation. Actually, all the resources used seem to really help you make those connections without needing an...

Re: Help with Rosetta Stone

In the settings look for something to specify that a child under 12 is using it. Sometime that helps. My daughter, who is dyslexic, had to start keeping a notebook and write down words. Also, if you look on the CD, there are worksheets, and those may have some spellings. Some kind of vocabulary list...

Re: Exp to 1850 daily time?

Well, it might depend on if you have your 7th grader doing Apologia General Science as recommended, which is supposed to be done a little more independently. I think it was 2 hours for us when I did this first time around with a 6th grader and twin 2nd graders. Now, my 2nd graders are 7th graders an...

Re: Need help with Progeny Press and more for 7th grader

We don't do the research projects and essays. With my oldest, who loves to read, she would read the entire book (usually in a week), and then we broke out the PP guide into a section (vocabulary, questions, deeper thought, whatever) a day. Sometimes she would need to reread the chapters the PP guide...

Re: Help me understand handwriting in 1st grade

Dysgraphia comes under the heading of "dyslexia." Symptoms are: can not write on a line, forms letters the wrong way, and generally handwriting is illegible. My dyslexic kids had trouble remembering how to form the letters - where to start, which direction to circle around, etc. HWT (Handwriting Wit...

Re: How to simplify the curriculum?

I would really see what is taking most of your time. Is it making notebooking pages? Can you scribe for him for that? Is it math or language arts? Are you using efficient curricula?

You may need to use a timer for a couple of days to see where your hang-ups are.

Re: MLK Day on Monday

Thanks for the link to the speech and audio. We listened and followed along. One of my boys said, "It's a very inspiring speech!" The other said, "I like how poetic Martin Luther King was." My husband doesn't get this day off so we usually just do our regular school day, and I've never really done a...

Re: Struggling reader 2nd grade

I suspect two of my kids are dyslexic. My oldest was a big talker, but exhibited many of the other symptoms. (Like yours, she could narrate easily, comprehension was high, etc.) She loves to read. Doing All About Spelling with her really improved her reading. My other child (a boy) that I suspect is...

He will only do the Apologia Genera Science. I would call the office. I think there is a "package" to swap out the science if the only one doing that year is in 7th/8th grade.

The high school years cover the entire Bible, Worldviews, Religions, etc. In the younger years, you memorize parts of the Bible, or in Explorers to 1850, the entire book of James. World Religions are covered in Exploring Countries and Cultures. But, the Bible is beautifully intertwined with the hist...

My junior is a little behind... Maybe a week or two. But, that is because of *required* instructor driving (2 hour slots) and doctors appointments. Re: Placement help

The idea with MFW is that you have the kids at grade level in math and language arts. You combine for Bible, history and science. MFW uses notebooking pages for Bible, history and science, so your 3rd grader can create pages at his level, while your 2nd grader creates pages at his level. MFW also ha...

The first time we did CTG, we did do the feasts. The second time, I had a high schooler and twin 5th graders. We did a Sabbath feast, and maybe one other. It was fine. They remembered a bunch from the first time. We got good books from the library to read about them. Some modifications: find a cloth...

I have used the audio CD (mp3) with my 7th graders, or I have read it aloud to them and helped them as needed. So that could help. Finish 5B by the end of 6th grade. That may mean your 5th grader needs to work closer to an hour a day, and through the summers. I started my boys (twins) in 1A at the beginning of 2nd grade, and they finished 5B by the beginning of 7th grade. We do work through the summers in math, spelling, and re...

I just asked my daughter open ended questions like: 1) What was most inspiring? 2) Was there anything that caused you concern? 3) How did this book affect your faith? 4) How did this book help you see the need for God's word for other people? and we discussed. I had read several of them before, so I...

You don't have to find the *exact* books in the list. You can search by subject and topic and see if you can find others, if they don't have them.
