Re: I need to settle down - advice?

Deb, Housework? On a school day? NO WAY... Besides laundry, meals, and dishes, it doesn't happen (unless someone dumps shoes full of sand on the floor, or spills milk over the kitchen floor that must be cleaned up immediately) in my house. Saturday is the day we clean house (really, it's mostly me, ...

End-of-year finale, parties, celebrations

We will joyfully finish our first year of homeschooling on Friday. I can hardly believe it. We have done Adventures and a little bit of Kindergarten (to be continued next year). I would love to hear some of the ways that you celebrate the end of the year - activities, special events, surprises, wha...

Kind of neat...

Now, one of my grandfathers was married 4 times (due to deaths and one annulment). His last wife was into decorating eggs - she would get ostrich eggs, and carve out one side, and do some kind of scene inside, and decorate and paint the outside. They were just beautiful creations. Somehow, one of my...

ECC Preparation

For those of you that have experienced ECC, what do you wish you would have known / considered before you jumped into the ECC year? Do you have any suggestions of "mental mindsets" that might be helpful or anything you wish you would have known earlier in the ECC year? I am grateful for the ECC pos...

Re: Biblical Earth Day resources?

Answers in Genesis has a Global Warming video up this week (it's a little over 45 minutes), but you get the same idea - being a good steward of the earth, and caring for people.

I think they also had an article up on their front page yesterday about "Earth Day."

Re: dyslexia

Trisha: Do you think the therapies you mentioned ... I know nothing about them... would be good activities even if dyslexia is not a problem? There is a book called "Smart Moves: Why Learning is Not All in Your Head" (or something to that effect). It is very technical, but she recommends doing many...

Tricia, How long have you been using the therapies? I am also curious how long you typically spent on them daily/weekly? Thanks again for all the info. :) We've been doing them since the beginning of our school year, last August, pretty consistently. I was spreading the "therapies" or "exercises" t...

Re: dyslexia

Angie, My dd did the on/no, was/saw, felt/left, from/form evil/live stuff while reading a lot. The only letters she really reversed while reading were b/d, but several she wrote backwards (and still occasionally slips up) including s, c, f (makes the arch the wrong way), and numbers 3, 5, 6, and 7, ...

from what i can tell, the first grade abeka phonics is only one workbook page per day. that doesn't seem rigorous to me...i can't figure out why all the reviews say it is so challenging and so incredibly rigorous? am i missing something? i love the history/bible of mfw, btw...just thinking through ...

dyslexia

This week we found out that the academic difficulties our 2nd born has always experienced are actually dyslexia. I am feeling a little dazed right now. I have always known he was different than my other kids. But to have put a name on the problem, and have it be something that he may struggle with ...

Re: For those who have struggled with ECC

We don't struggle, as long as I don't push my 3rd grade dd to do "advanced" assignments. I'll save those for 8th grade. And, only do one vocabulary word a week for a 3rd grader.

My little 4 year old boys join in on the science experiments, and "passport day."

Re: Weeks 25-26 China

If you do the "Printing Press" activity from the art book, you can use foam shapes (you know, from the craft section of your favorite big box or craft store). instead of cutting out an old rubber insole. It worked well, and was easier than cutting stuff out.

Wow, it's unanimous! That makes it easy! :-) Okay, so we'll use MFW science. But since I am "scientifically challenged" and everything, I have a couple more questions for you... (1) At some point in the TM or even in the science books that come with the curriculum, is vocabulary given and are names...

What's your opinion of MFW science?

DD (5) and I have been working our way through MFW K this year and loving every minute of it!! As I look through the science that comes with MFW 1, I'm wondering if (1) they don't have a chance to get into one subject long enough before moving on, (2) this might result in lots of "gaps" in what the...

Re: If you're struggling with ECC

For us, ECC has been a blessing. Maybe it is where we came from (workbook/textbook). The first 2 weeks were a struggle - quite intense. And Saudi Arabia, well, we were glad to be out of Saudi... But, otherwise, Geography is now my dd's new favorite subject. Oh, she doesn't really like doing the voca...

Re: Flash card help . . . Trish? . . . anyone? please?

Your frustration is she changed activities every 10 cards... But, she gave you some great ideas with what to do next time ;) With my dd, I tried to limit it to one activity - but perhaps reduce the cards to a set of 10 or 20 - ones she tends to have trouble with. Say, "Today when we do flashcards, y...

Just to throw something completely different out... Have you considered a food sensitivity? When my dd gets milk (in any form), she acts like you describe. Re: HELP! Ideas for forming glue into "jewels" for crown

I wonder if mixing a little cornstarch into the glue or something like that would "thicken" it up? There is a white craft glue called Modge Podge that you can get at Walmart that works really well for glue crafts. (It's at Michaels, too.) It is in a bottle with a screw on lid. I use this for any "gl...

You know, I have a little bit different perspective on D. Livingstone... I think of men in the military (my dad served 20 years in the Air Force). We have the same issue with dictation. I'm at PLL lessons 122/123 (The Tortoise and the Hare). My dd's brain just fights writing.
