I try to schedule outside stuff in the afternoon. Would that work? I'm with Julie on this one... While it may be convenient to say, "Oh, schedule us anytime," I specifically say, "After 2:30pm, please." That frees up mornings to get the most of it done, and allows me to find a sitter if necessary. ...

Just agreeing with Kelly here. I go over the Review Sheets, and say, "Look it says 'Add or subtract,' so pay attention to the sign when you get to these problems." She still misses that on tests, but I forget to do that with her on tests. I like the highlighter idea - highlighting the sign before do...

Posted: Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:52 pm My thoughts: keep your supplies "in a place" so you can find them easily (in boxes, shelves, whatever, in your school room), but school where ever you want. Math, spelling, writing, and any "independent" work is done at the desk. Reading and read alouds are done eit...

Posted: Tue Jun 10, 2008 9:47 pm Just make sure she really doesn't have a learning issue. I had a friend whose son was/is like this. Finally, she had him evaluated at some place called "LearningRX". You know... You go to the library too much when

You know... You go to the library too much when the librarian says to you, as you walk in the door, "This isn't Thursday," or "Where are the kids?" We normally go to the library on Thursday, as that is the day we usually don't have other things going on. Well, I had some books on hold, and we start ...

Would you consider letting him type it up on the computer? Might be more willing that way, though you may need to have some keyboarding instruction first.

Do we review missed words on a daily basis

I know I saw the answer to this somewhere on the board, but I can't seem find it. My question is regarding reviewing missed words. Do we review missed words on a daily basis, or review once a week? The way it works for us each day: Start with the words they missed yesterday. If she misses all 3 aga...

Phonics with a regional accent?

We are on week 6 of MFW-K. Just for kicks, I showed my son how to read M-A-T yesterday. When I said, "you can read!" he was so excited, he jumped over the table at me. Now, in today's lesson, we started using the blend ladder and the cut-and-paste page with Sam and Ann. It may just be my southern p...

Reading - Phonics questions, sight words,

Does MFW teach K sight words?
1GirlTwinBoys wrote:Just curious if this will come up later in our cirriculum.
MFW is the same way as Abeka. They introduce the words "the" and "a" (so you can have sentences that make sense), and then everything else is CVC, and then on to CVCE and CVVC words.

Tips on the "soap carving" project in ECC

Hey, we did the soap carving project today - or rather I did, and dd watched. A couple of things: 1. Make sure you have a large bar of soap. I couldn't find any large single bars of soap at our local Target that I knew were more rectangular, not oval, and we don't use Ivory (and they only had an 8 p...

My dd and I butt heads like this, sometimes. She likes being creative. The directions would say, "Use a red crayon and circle the thing that doesn't belong." She would take a blue crayon and X out the things that did belong. I know dd understood the directions, because I would ask her what was going...

State coloring challenge help

If you start with the 4 corners states (CO, UT, NM, and AZ), and color each a different color, this does work. It gets tricky over around TN and KY, so they have to kind of think ahead. What dd and I did was just lightly pencil in our colors until we were sure we didn't make any mistakes, and then w...

Attitude chips...

Here's something I've been doing with my dd. We start the day with a cup of 20 "chips" (our chips are 20 pink paperclips, but you could use buttons, game chips or anything like that). Is she wrapping her wrist around? Have her write at a whiteboard or easel - it's too tiring to fight gravity.

Otherwise, use pencil grips.

Funny ECC Story...

So, today was Week 2, Day 5 for us. One of the geography activities was to hide a "treasure" in the backyard or neighborhood, and make a treasure hunter's map to go find it.
