James and Ex1850

Expl-1850's Bible for the year is memorizing the book of James... the entire book. We're at Week 24, and, so far, our daughter can recite James chapters 1-3 almost perfectly from memory, and is focused as we begin chapter 4. There are many moments when we're so glad the Lord led us to MFW. Today, we...

Re: Roman Feast

The Roman Feast is one of our family's favorite memories. Like Julie noted, a blanket on the floor works really well. Also, the area doesn't have to be perfectly round. A long, narrow space of floor would work perfectly, also. I got the impression from our RTR reading that resting during eating is t...

Re: Kindergarten altered for special needs

Hi, Lori, Your story made me smile, too. We faced those same obstacles with our youngest amazing dd (speech and OT delay). I didn't "see" her progress through the year b/c our sweet girl, like your son, couldn't give feedback, neither by writing nor verbally very well. I didn't know how much she was...

How to Combine

I am thinking of using MFW this fall so that I combine my two DSs. One will be in third grade and the other will be in first. My youngest is at the same level academically as his big brother except for phonics/reading. He just doesn't seem to get those yet, at all. Hopefully by the fall he will mak...

For You They Signed

Each chapter in the book For You They Signed by Marilyn Boyer is a brief biography of each of the Declaration of Independence signers, the battles they faced and sacrifices they made, followed by a brief character study.

We found it at our library, and will have to purchase a copy for home.

If you begin in K, what about 8th?

I'm currently using K for my youngest and planning on bringing my other children into MFW in the fall. Question...if he continues each year with MFW, what would he use for 8th grade? He would have finished all of the programs in the Investigate section but would be too young for the high school pro...

Re: Possibly changing to MFW for 2014-15

Hi, Kristi, We used CTG two years ago. Yes, we did like it. And it is both challenging and fun. CTG intertwines the Biblical record and history books as it teaches about Ancient Egypt, the Babylonians and Medeo-Persian empires. The study on Greek civilization, Alexander the Great, etc. is rich and i...

Re: ECC Weeks 14-15 France - Question

Agreeing... They'll get a lot more focus on the classification system in the future. The key for ECC, I think also, is the different ecosystems and how they affect the people groups' history, cultures and habits in each country / continent. Don't forget the missionary biographies. They add such inde...

CTG four days a week, instead of five?

Does anyone school 4 days a week instead of 5 days a week with CTG? We don't do a light day on a fifth day, we only do school 4 days a week. :) I'd love to hear how you work the grid to accommodate 4 days. Thank you! Yes, we did. We did Friday's work (it's usually very short) on Th. If needed, we c...

GHA - Which art to choose?

In January I'll be starting CTG with my two oldest and 1st with my little Ethiopian who is 8 but very delayed. I talked with the MFW office and they suggested doing the reading/la and math from 1st and bringing my son into CTG with my other kids. My question, then, is about art. Would you do Drawin...

We were able to get on these ships two years ago when they came to Arkansas. (*If they haven't come to your area yet, hang in there! They're going all over the main area of the U.S. :) ) The children weren't tired or bored at the end, and didn't want to get off of the ships. It's a wonderful tour. B...

When we have this issue, we go through 3 Questions: 1.) Is this a character issue? If so, that is top priority over the next few months. If it isn't character, we move to #2/3. 2.) Is this child bored b/c he/she isn't being challenged? If so, we come up with a more advanced version. 3.) Is the child...

Yes, the initial set-up takes a little time. But we love SP because 1.) it doesn't waste time, and 2.) we can implement misspelled words from other classes easily into each day's lesson. You're very wise to wait until you feel you've gotten the hang of the other classes before you start SP. Next yea...
