Medieval Times Dinner

Hello. We are in RTR and studying the Middle Ages. Loving it! Wondering if anyone has gone to the Medieval Times Dinner/Tournament. I see that the Chicago location has an Educational Matinee as well as their regular programs. The educational matinee includes some teaching about life during Middle A...

Using MFW year round

I'm just curious if anyone uses MFW year round and how. I had originally planned on starting first grade as soon as I receive it in April, but I probably won't finish by Sept. When looking through the old first grade manual that I came across, it looks like the science projects are scheduled around...

Re: Grading question

I agree with Trish, though I haven't been through all MFW yet. I don't plan on testing, really. I feel like I can know when my kids understand and know something. I will probably start testing them in math at some point, but I'm not sure when, later elementary. Science probably the same. I might do ...

Re: Help With Placement Please

My son has an Oct birthday. I tried to start him in the K program just after he turned 5 even though technically by public school standards he wouldn't have been in K till the following fall. He wasn't ready. It wasn't that he wasn't ready for the material. It was that he needed to mature more befor...

Re: 1st grader doing Adventures?

I'm planning for my K'ers and preschoolers to join in when we start Adv next summer/fall. I'll have a 2nd grader, 2 K'ers and 2 preschoolers (and one under a year still). Right now, my oldest does 1st and the youngers tag along. They tagged along when he did K too. It will all work out! Have fun!! :-)

Re: Question about Bible notebook in 1st

Our children have so much in common. ;) I didn't respond on your reading thread simply because of time, but my son is the same way. We are about to hit this as well and I am not inclined to not correct his spelling. I really struggle with spelling and always have. If I write it wrong, it's in my hea...

thinking ahead to next year

I've been pondering this lately and thought I'd ask you all. I'm 8 weeks pregnant with our 4th blessing and due end of july! We started a year round schedule this year and I love it. SO much nicer for all of us.I really want to keep that up. Next year my ds will start the MFW k and my oldest will b...

When to start grade 1?

Well it happened.... my teacher's manual arrived today and after reading through it, realized that I don't want to wait until next September to start!!! I want to start right after Christmas (DS will be 5.5, definitely capable, is already reading, already on grade 1 math etc...). Would it be a prob...

Re: He stronly dislikes reading. Advice and questions

Thanks everyone! I think I just needed some encouragement that he will get it and to keep working at it. As for the games, he actually doesn't like the games because he has to read to play them. :~ Going back and rereading the same story only sort of works. He is able to memorize what it says very e...

1st grade - Prep for beginning MFW & Singapore next year

I have a first grader. I am not doing MFW First Grade. My question is...is it important that he have his basic addition and subtraction facts mastered before starting Singapore next year? I am wondering if we just touch on the basics with broad concepts this year or is mastery necessary? I want him...

Re: Anyone teach K, 1st and Adv. at the same time?

1. Do adventures (Bible, History & Science) with all. 2. Do only MFW grade-level math, phonics, and writing. So, do 2nd grade English & Spelling & Math with the 7 year old. Do 1st grade Phonics, Writing and Math with the 6 year old. Do K Phonics, Writing & Math with the 5 year old. 3. Drop the RS. ...

Just reading along as I'm in VA and will eventually need this info. Our oldest is only in 1st. I have hardly any idea what you guys are even talking about. LOL! (I sort of do, but haven't looked into any of that yet. ;) ) But, I didn't see in the VA laws that there are any different requirements for...

Re: Why not do calendar/100 day chart on Exploration Day?

We don't do the 100 chart on Exploration Day. We will celebrate getting to 100, not the 100th day of school, just like we did in K. I don't get confused on the days in the TM v. days on the chart. I actually use it to help me keep on target with the math pages because it has the number of the day in...

Re: Reassure me that the extras are really extras

Personally, I think if he is reading by the end of the year ANYTHING else is gravy. He doesn't NEED art or music or science or history at this point. All you "have" to do is teach him phonics, math, and writing. I put the "have" in quotes because even there you could go slow. He's only 6 and in man...

Re: Getting bored with the routine stuff

Let's see....we stopped the songs probably 1/2 way through K. We would just sing them occasionally. I stopped making mine color the pictures for the first page, I just had him cut them out quickly and be done with it. We varied the 100 chart by counting by 2's, 5's, 10's. We stopped the patterns on ...

We don't have requirements for our state. For K, I just kept the worksheets he did in a folder along with some of the crafts or photos of things we couldn't keep (like the volcano). Eventually, I'll end up going through and only keeping a handful of that stuff to show progress. For now, he is my onl...

Re: Mom struggling with 1st grade math

We are on day 29 of 1st. I'm not having an issue getting the math in as far as the amount of time it takes. The daily activities go really fast after just a couple of weeks and I can definitely tell he is learning from them even though we go through them very quickly. In fact, he usually does his ca...

If my oldest was "breezing through," I guarantee you I wouldn't be looking at the phonics games. ;) Life is different with 5 kids 6 and under. Re: Is it time to slow down/review?

I wrote a list of words to read on a big white board. She could erase them after reading each. She loves this! I have done this exact thing. He loves it too. What is it about a white board that makes kids giddy? LOL! We reviewed everything except the cold type words also. I didn't have those in my ...

Re: Is it time to slow down/review?

Yes, I totally agree that the games are built in review. The manual says that if they are grasping the concept well, you can skip them, that they are optional. I haven't forgotten them, just haven't made them a priority because our time is so limited. Until the last couple of days, he has been doing...
