Re: Anyone teach two kindergarten students together?

Do any Bible, science, history, crafts, games, songs, etc. together. Even the number of the day worksheets and counting can be done together. (I had a "circle time," and we would do days of the week, months of the year, calendar, counting, etc. all together.) Do any phonics individually. I also did...

Re: sort of OT: math games using polyhedral dice

Yay for being creative!!! I was creative with our math game a few days ago....a little creative anyway. ;) I took the cards I'd made for number war and gave my son a greater-than/less-than symbol (just a card with it drawn on). He had to use that card symbol to tell me which number was higher, his o...

Re: Art....again.

My oldest is 6.5. I use washable stuff for the most part. Every now and again I might use something else if someone gives him a art type thing as a gift and the paint that comes with it is not washable. But, everything I buy is washable. :)

Re: The magic of 1st has worn off and I'm ready to quit!

I'm so sorry I haven't been back and posted. I've read all your responses and I truly appreciate them and the encouragement you provided. I really appreciate all the advice. I've already used some of it today. :-) As it turned out, last night after dinner, my son asked me if we could do some school ...

Re: Read alouds in 1st

Crystal - Thank you very much! I am definitely open to opinions that I *should* be reading chapter books to him/them. If that's what I need to do, then I will. But, honestly, I was really hoping to hear what you said. When we have read chapter books, I just don't feel he gets as much out of it as he...

Re: White Board or Chalk Board or None at all?

White board markers work on windows too....that's what we do right now. We have huge windows right behind our dining table, so it works for us. Reeaaallllly.........We have a huge sliding glass door right behind the table we do school on. I had no idea I might be missing a big opportunity. LOL! I'l...

Re: White Board or Chalk Board or None at all?

Mine is still young and our wall space is very limited. I have a small whiteboard, like one you would put on a fridge. It works well for the occasional things I need to demonstrate. I got it at Wal-Mart. I suspect that someday I will need a full-sized one on the wall. But, that will have to be when ...

Re: MFW K question

I have the old edition still and that is what I used for K. I had no problem finding books that I could use for info on the topic in the non-fiction children's section. I usually reserved 3-4. Often one or two might be above age level and I couldn't read the whole thing to him, but I would still use...

Re: Butterfly Garden Question

Unfortunately, none of them actually made it to frogs even though we did everything we were told by on-line sources and our pastor who used to be a biology teacher. But, they made it to having back legs and front buds. That happened to us when my oldest was young. I wonder if that's the norm. Our p...

Re: MFW K question

I did a couple of things. What I did most frequently was used non-fiction picture books from the library. We went every 2-4wks. I would always get at least 2 units worth of books, usually 3, at a time. We would have planned every week or at least every other, but I have 5 small children and it's a h...

Re: Butterfly Garden Question

Looking foreword to those units, but thinking ahead, to doing it again on 2-3 years, has anyone done frogs from tadpoles? Seems fun for a boy imparticular, and a way to make it unique for him? Or baby salmon? We once did this in 5th grade and then released them in a local river where salmon lived. ...

I'll try not to repeat anything anyone else said, but I might. I agree MFW K would be perfect and I don't think you need the deluxe package. :) I just wanted to encourage you by letting you know that I started my 5 year old in MFW K when he was about to turn 6. Re: How do you store student pages before use?

I have only completed K and haven't decided on a system for my 1st stuff yet since it is quite different and has a lot less loose pages. However, for K, I 3-hole punched all the workbook pages and put them in a binder. Then, I had a 1 in notebook for my student. Each unit, I would take the pages out...

Teaching a 3 yo and 5yo with K curriculum?

I'm very glad to find this forum! We've just started MFW K curriculum in May. I have a 5 1/2 yo boy, and an eager, tag-along 3 yo girl. Everything was running smoothly along, until my 5 yo began to get bored with the worksheets, rushing through them, and my 3 yo began to get frustrated with the par...

Re: So much for "I'm done..."

Thanks! He does write other than during actual lessons. He wrote a lot of our camping list for us because he was so excited. ;) He also draws a lot and then names his pictures and asks how to spell it. So, I am surprised, but he's been playing outside more and drawing/writing less. He has never been...

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all the input. You all reminded me exactly why I chose a PHONICS program and not a sight word program. I admit, I didn't do a ton of research on the styles of teaching reading. I didn't feel like i needed to. I don't remember, but I don't think I was taught to re...

Great job by your daughter!

Re: Handwriting question, MFW K

This is really a great question! My 6 year old who is finishing up K does the same. He doesn't have great handwriting, but it isn't bad either. But, he doesn't form them correctly a lot of the time. Some he does, but definitely not all. Starting at the bottom instead of the top is a very common thin...

Yes, I think finding something else for her for next year and then doing MFW K is a good way to go. That is what I am doing. ;) Mine are 4, turning 5 in Dec. So, slightly different in age. My older son did MFW K this year. The 4 year olds tagged along. I didn't get them their own worksheets. So, the...

MFW without the book basket?

We've enjoyed MFWK and MFW1 thoroughly, and we're now in ADV. I am an avid lover of the book basket and ours is typically full of Marie's suggestions. This is really the crux of MFW in many way for us, aside from the Bible integration. We have been blessed to live near an exceptional library system...
