Re: Adventures Book Basket question

I almost bought my own "book pack" by buying many of the book basket books. I was going to buy one or two books from every unit, minus any state specific books. (I can get those from the library.) I did get a Children's state atlas or whatever it's called with info on every state and I am still plan...

Is 1st similar to k?

Hi all, Is the layout of kindergarten similar to the layout of 1st grade? Thanks! I would say that depends on if you mean the manual or the program itself. ;) The manual, yes, it is similar. There is a grid with specific day to day notes behind it. The notes for teaching throughout the year are in ...

Re: The ... Topic

I have wondered though if we need to start easing in at some point over the next couple of years with our 10 year old. As his body changes it seems important. I'm thinking if by God's grace we make it to 10 without my oldest asking that it will be time to start thinking about easing into it. Their ...

Questions about Drawing With Children

How are your kids responding to the lessons? My child loved the first lesson, copying patterns. It inspired him to make all kinds of drawings afterwards. But, the Relaxation Exercises were a disaster. He's a perfectionist first child and got really upset trying to follow the instructions for relaxi...

Newbie question

I am considering switching to MFW next year for my oldest two who will be in 2nd and 1st. I wanted to do American history so am considering adventures. In the event that we love it (fingers crossed!), my oldest will have 8th grade left and my next oldest will finish the 5 year cycle in 7th. What wo...

Re: The ... Topic

We aren't going to make it that much longer either, Shawna. I fee like I'm going to have to discuss it very soon. OP - At this point, I would probably go ahead and open the discussion...gently. Maybe just say, "if you ever have questions of how it actually happens, please let me or dad know and we'l...

Drawing with Children

Hi - I am using Drawing with Children for the first time this year. It came with Learning God's Story, for my 1st grader, however I am planning on using it with my older kids that I know it will benefit (and will probably buy the book for teens too, for my 12yo). After buying a lot of art supplies ...

First Grade Reading Chart, and other confusions...

Can someone tell me what purpose the First Grade Reading Chart serves? I'm suppose to show it to my son tomorrow. I know he's going to ask me, "what is this for?" It looks almost like the periodic table from chemistry class. I can see how it might be a good guide for me as the parent/teacher to col...

Re: Sarah Whitcher's story

Oh, we also read Caddie Woodlawn during ADV; the kids loved it. We just read excerpts of this in [our English program] a couple weeks ago. LOL!! Zack was intrigued. We are slowing reading through the entire Little House series. I'm funny about doing things in order though. And, funny about doing th...

Love it! We are set to start that in a week...I think...but we are done with...oh, I can't think of the name. I'm tired... The Courage of Sarah Noble . My kids want to start the next book. But it isn't scheduled yet and I know we will finish it before it's even scheduled. LOL!! I need to find someth...

Well, if you want me to talk you into K, I can definitely do that. ;) Personally, I have hesitated to get MFW, but done it anyway. I am SO happy I decided to go with it. I don't know why but I came really close to changing after K...I have grass is greener syndrome, what can I say? &) It wasn't unti...

Re: testing/review

I don't necessarily want to "test" them, but I would like some way of reviewing and assuring they are retaining. If that is because they can explain it in paragraph form verbally, that is okay with me too! :) Still, I wanted to have some way of remembering (for myself) what they learned so I could ...

Re: Spelling by Sound and Structure "drills"

I'm doing Adv right now. Marie says to do Part A on Monday and then either break up part B into 2 days and then test on Thursday or do part B in one day and test on Wed leaving Thursday for a retest. Sometimes we do part B over 1 day, sometimes 2. Just depends on what else is going on. She does not ...

Help! Homeschooling with a toddler

We are in our our 2nd week of HS for this year, im HSing a 1st grader and a K and i also have a 3 yr old. I was hoping to be able to do the 1st and K together at the same time, but split my time between the 2. It seemed tho very early on that that was not going to work as my K is very active and ve...

Re: Adventures with a Baby?

I have a 10 month old. So, I did this last year. :-) Honestly, we do homeschool year round so we can be more relaxed. Our year is July 1 - June 30. Other than that though, having a baby hasn't really bothered our homeschooling much. It's not that difficult with him. I did have learn to school on the...

Kindergarten question

How much time do I allow to order the ants and caterpillars? I see the units that I use them in (Insects and Butterflies) but I don't see any ordering info. At the end of unit 8, very bottom of page 69 in the manual, it suggests you order the ants. At the end of unit 18, bottom of page 121, it sugg...

Compass rose on the placemat map....

am I missing it? We are working on week 1 of Adventures and the TM mentions using the placemat map to talk about directions with the compass rose, but I don't see one on either side of the map. Thankfully, the US map from the student pages had one, so no problem. But, it would be handy to have one ...

Yay!!! That's great news! My daughter loves it too and she is reading already also. Both my twins are loving it and I was a bit worried they would be beyond it, especially my daughter. But, it's going great. This is my second time through. Last time I did it with my oldest, he was barely recognizing...

Bible with 1st and 2nd grader

Has anyone figured out what is best to do with Bible when you are doing MFW1st and Adventures? The Bible curriculum for 1st seems so interwoven into the language arts, maybe less so with 2nd grader's Adventures? Do I need to do two separate Bible times with each kid or is there a good way to do Bib...

Thanks for encouraging me. I'm feeling better about it now...and slightly less stressed since we are trying to do less.

"But, it doesn't say to do that in your book..."

Yesterday, I was having my son copy his verse in Adventures for the first time this year. (He's done it tons in 1st.) As I was telling him, he says, "But Mom, it doesn't say to do that in your book. You are just making me do it because you want me to." While that could be true ;), in this case, I wa...

We cut ours short also. We just had fun learning about creation and coloring the numbers and making the creation book. Re: Do you break for a baby?

I have a 9 month old. We were doing 1st when I had him and added K for my twins when the baby was about 4 months old. Personally, I found that I needed more time off before the baby was born. I had stuff I needed to prep, but the bigger problem was my nesting. :~ It was on overdrive and I just could...
