MFW 1st...phonics progressing too quickly...

My 6-yr-old daughter completed the MFW-K very well; could read all the words in that. Now at Day 36, I guess I'm the one getting a little overwhelmed. Every day is a new sound, with only a short review of the previous lesson before continuing. Although she is getting the sounds, it just seems that ...

Re: Quick & Easy Lunch Ideas

We're always in a lunch rut too! I tend to gravitate towards sandwiches, either lunch meat or pb & j. I like tuna and egg salad, but my kids don't so much. Sometimes I use a tortilla instead of bread for my son and I. We have fish sticks and chicken nuggets occasionally too. One thing no ones mentio...

Excited for Drawing with Children

I was looking at the Drawing with Children book, and I am so excited to use this for myself! In school, I was always in band, so I never got to do an art class past middle school. I can't wait to learn along with my kids! I'm so thankful that homeschooling will allow my children to pursue their inte...

Re: #23 - Fox

I put all the kitchen chairs in the living room in a circle and covered them with a big blanket. We pretended it was a fox den, we were the foxes of course!

I also cut their sandwiches into 4 triangles which made an X.

Re: #26 - Yellow

For day 3, the TM recommends going on a color search, and then making a poster with magazine clippings. Instead of this, I let my kids use my camera and take pictures of yellow things they could find around the house. We tried to go in every room. Then I printed the pictures off on regular paper and...

Re: Good readers and read-alouds for 1st grade

We just read My Side of the Mountain by Jean George, there are three in the series, and he's written several other books. They are about a boy that leaves home and lives off the land. My son loved it, and my husband even listened! (he's just finishing K)

Re: #26 - Yellow

I colored frosting, blue, red, and yellow, and then had the kids mix them to figure out what the secondary colors were. Then they decorated graham crackers as a snack. (This is the end of the year and I was out of red paint!)

Re: So Excited!

I just had to comment and say welcome to mfw! I love it. We're just finishing up MFWK with my 5 year old son (soon to be 6), and my 3 year old daughter (soon to be 4). And I also have a new baby born at the end of January! We'll be doing MFW1 this year, and rod and staff preschool with my 4 year old...

Re: # 8 - Dinosaur

I found a book at the library called A Dinosaur Cookbook, by Sarah L. Schuette. My kids loved the Fossil Tracks, which was peanut butter spread on a round cracker, and then put 3 chow mein noodles on top to look like a 3 toed foot print. We're also going to try the T. Rex Teeth Pops, which are choco...

Re: Need help picking curriculum for a younger child

Thank you. I did read your post and looked up Rod and Staff Preschool, now I really like that program. I think she will like that better, especially since she will have her own bible story book and color pages. Re: Need help picking curriculum for a younger child

After doing a lot of reading on past posts, I'm leaning towards finding another K curriculum for her and then redoing MFWK when she's actually in K. I'm not sure what I can do to keep everything fresh for 3 years in a row. I was thinking about the Primer Explode the Code workbooks, and letting her d...

Re: Couple more questions about Kindergarten from a newbie m

We started at the beginning of August, and we live in Wisconsin. We are mostly done with lesson 15. The insect lesson didn't line up too good, as we weren't able to go outside and observe insects, but we did order our ants, they came the day after Thanksgiving. We just finished all the farm animals,...

Re: How to stretch K curriculum when child knows letters/sou

I am also doing K right now, we are going to start Ww Water tomorrow. Have you tried looking at the ideas forum on here? Under the Kindergarten Ideas, there is a section for every unit. There are usually a lot of ideas, extra books, and links to websites with craft projects. I usually find extra cra...

Re: need help with blend ladder, tearful child (K)

I had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago without the dramatic letter sounds. Instead, my son only wanted to play with the letters, bang his pencil on the table... basically anything but focus on the ladder. I think that this was the first thing we came to in MFW that was actually difficult for...

Re: When to start K?

Hello, I am in this situation right now. My son just turned 5 in mid October of this year. I started K with him in August, before he turned 5, and it has been going great! He loves it and usually wants to do more school than I have planned, so I have had to print off extra color sheets to keep him b...
