Ideas for 2yo? Back-to-school items

I was listening to David Hazell's "Occupying Preschoolers..." talk and I agree that the little ones should get a little something new too when the older siblings get their new school items. I was going to get my toddler an educational sticker book but then everyone wanted one! So, I still need some...

Re: NT portion of LGS 1st grade

I haven't started 1st yet, but I do have an extremely active, impulsive, distractible little boy (ADHD, sensory processing disorder) :-) I am agreeing with the others to stay near him until work is completed, which you are already doing. Also, writing for him is a good idea. I even do that sometimes...

Re: Exploring Creation with General Science

This is interesting. Well, my rising 7th grader will have a challenging year I suppose :-) I don't think it will be a problem for her though as she is a sciency kid.

Re: Tell me about ECC...

I am currently using ECC with a 3rd grader and an advanced 6th grader. It works well for both of them. What I like about ECC is the exposure to different cultures and the heart of the program...its mission focus. My dc have developed a heart for other people. They realize just how big this world is ...

Health Curriculum

I was wondering if anyone does a health curriculum? and one that works well at the elementary level . Thanks We don't use a health curriculum per se, but we talk about health daily. We discuss proper eating habits, hygiene, exercise, etc. We sometimes read library books about health and my oldest d...

Re: Children's book of presidents?

We have The Complete Book of Presidents and States. I can't address whether it is biased or not as we haven't used it yet but it is a nice overview of each president and state. It also has information on government.

Where to start with a 5th grader (and younger siblings)?

Should I start with Exploring Countries and Cultures or Creation to Greeks? He will be an old fifth grader, turning 11 in the fall. Is he your only child? I think that might make a difference in what you choose. If you have youngers I would definitely choose ECC. I think the standard recommendation...

Re: Is this too much?

Disneymommy, You sound like me at times. :-) It is tempting to want to do too much. We want to provide our children with the best and everything you have listed looks wonderful. But, I am afraid you and/or your children might burn out. I say this with gentleness because I completely understand. I ha...

So I opened the ant hill to start setting it up before they get here and the top lid doesn't close all the way. Is that how it's supposed to be? It is probably a millimeter or two open. I am worried they will escape! :~

Re: math struggles

My son did a lot of fractions math facts in 7th grade. I was tutoring at Kumon at the time, so that's what I used, but in any case I really encourage keeping up math drill up through fractions. She is pretty good at basic math facts but more practice certainly wouldn't hurt and she could be a littl...

Re: math struggles

Guess who is liking Life of Fred Fractions now? :-)

If you started late with Singapore and attempted to finish before 7th/saxon, how did you handle bumps in the road and still manage to get through it? Would it be detrimental if she doesn't finish 5B before Saxon?

Re: math struggles

These are some good thoughts and ideas. She seems to "kinda" get it but not completely so maybe a break will help rest the brain a bit. She has covered a lot of material in the last year. I know they will be covered again. She doesn't have trouble with her multiplication facts. She knows them well, ...

Another fan of the phonics in MFW K here :-) I am using it with my 6year old and it is a great phonics program. It works! And, it is hands on and multisensory not just reading from a reader. We love it and I am pleased with how simple yet effective Marie has written this curriculum. Not sure how old...

Re: National Geographic, God's World, Nature's Friend

I was able to purchase a bunch of old National Geographic magazines at a thrift store for a nickel each. We used them to make our John 3:16 collage in ECC. I second God's World. I purchased it for both my girls and they enjoy it as do I. Another good nature magazine is Nature's Friend. It is creatio...

I was going to mention the same thing Melissa did. You could purchase the asterisked books so you have them on hand. Placement - Grades 2-6 don't automatically include math

On the fence due to Singapore I am new here having just started MFW K with my 5 year old son. But, I have to say, my son LOVES it! We have used and tried countless different curriculums with him and my 9 year old daughter that were less than engaging and just didn't make for a fun first year of hom...
