Re: AHL: New Answers book

Hi Rachel, We did! The main thing I remember is that they were very short - not at all a replacement for the New Answers book. But my son really loved seeing the authors speak, kind of like the video summaries you will have when you get to Thinking Like a Christian . And being the last one at home, ...

Re: Struggling reader 2nd grade

Similar to ruthamelia, I don't have direct experience with dyslexia but I do have experience with some kids just taking more time to get through learning to read. My grandson struggled to read until he was 9, plodding slowly through sounding out words and often repeating, but finally he was comforta...

Re: Starting AHL in middle of year?

Hi Missy, My first question would be about reading the Old Testament in its entirety. Is your student already doing that? Is that one of your goals in using AHL? If so, I might just do all of AHL, for half of this year and half of next. But about your essay question, if you open the AHL sample ( htt...

Re: Too Late?

Welcome back! I remember you :) ECC is a great idea for the coming year. Then you can jump in with whatever years your son has spent the least time on. As far as going from independence to a family-style program, I suspect it may be a transition for him. However, it would be valuable to me to spend ...

Re: Dealing with Fear and fighting with truth?

Good morning Grace, Ooooh, big questions, I like those! Your post brought back a lot of memories. I tend to have wandering thoughts, so I went back and underlined the main points &) One thing those fears made me appreciate was the position I was in, having spent many years interacting with the publi...

WHL Letter to the Editor assignments - Weeks 12, 15

My son is using the World History & Lit. program for his sophomore year of high school. I'm looking ahead at the editorial writing assignment about Martin Luther in Week15. We did not do the editorial assignment in Week 12 because we had some other things going on that week, but I have looked over ...

Re: Dip painting? GATHOA

By that point in GATHOA, we weren't doing the art, just the history portion. However, I'll take a stab while you wait for more experienced answers. I'm seeing it as: 1. squirt some of each color on a palette so you don't mess up your paint jars 2. dip your brush in the first color (the darkest color...

Re: US 1 - Worldview exam questions

It sounds like you have a great balance of his strengths and needs, as well as how to guide a young man who sounds a bit like my younger son - definitely not an oldest who had to do all things correctly LOL. Maybe someone else will chime in, but meanwhile it's great you're finding peace with a plan ...

US 1 - Worldview exam questions

I am wondering how other students have done with the Thinking Like A Christian tests/exams. Ds did okay on the quizzes but horrible on the first exam. Also 6 essays sounds crazy for this. I had him do three. It seemed like many of the multiple choice questions were hard to figure out also. This is ...

Re: Which level for phonics?

I agree with Lourdes that Learning God's Story sounds like a good fit. she doesn't have good word recognition yet (example, she might read a word on one page, and then come to it again a few sentences later and have to sound it out all over again). I just wanted to comment about this part of your qu...

I did not purchase the activity card set because I thought it was for 4th grade & up. But after watching the instructional dvd, it says about using the cards for the daily activities starting at 3rd grade. ...should I have purchased the activity card box? Just to answer this part of your question.....

I have been enjoying this thread and the thinking process that it sets in motion. (I even have my eye on it as a good Archived thread for encouragement :) ) Since there's a lull in the conversation, I thought I'd chime in, too. So far, I've seen so many comments that just stuck out to me and had me ...

Re: Has anyone had to send their dc to public school for a season?

Cindy, <hugs> and commiseration. Raising kids can be tough. I always hung on to the fact that I could only do the very best thing I knew and then pray over the imperfections. We did send our dd to public school for a class or 2 during a couple of years of high school, because she was so distraught o...

Geography packets?

I have noticed several mentions of geography packets being part of ECC as I read the archives on the subject of ECC. Have the packets been replaced with something else in recent years? I haven't found any packets in the ECC deluxe package. Or are the packets made by the teacher later in the year? W...

Re: Struggling with Applications of Grammar and praise for Mfw

Hi Amy, Fun to hear how your family has been blessed, as ours has. I opened up our copy of Applications and thought I'd throw out a few thoughts. 1. In my family, the parts of speech ( All-In-One Grammar ) were an important foundation and I pushed for mastery. However, Applications adds all the deta...

Re: ROAD TRIP- need suggestions

Hi Rhonda, RuthAmelia's post sparked the thought for me to look at a CTG audio thread, since that's kinda similar to AHL. http://board.mfwbooks.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=14643&p=97931#p97931 Although of course as you said, car audios don't have to be related at all. But some ideas came to mind from t...

Hello! It is time for my son to begin his research paper in WHL, but we have jumped back into MFW after using some other materials for a few years. Physcial Science count as a lab science?

Will most colleges accept Apologia Physical as a lab science? Thanks! It's up to you, in your homeschool, how you do this, so a few different experiences may help you decide what you will do. My son did Physical in 9th. It is very common in my area to do "physics first" in high school, and since a ...

Re: 9th grade math - Alg2 or Geometry?

One opinion I read recently suggested that jumping from geometry to precalculus could be harder than from algebra 2 to precalculus. That might be another reason to do geometry before algebra 2. This was kind of my thinking. I feel that algebra dexterity is important in upper maths, so doing it in 8...

Me too :) I used a transcript I found on the HSLDA site, filling in the courses as described in the MFW high school lesson plans. I did talk to an HSLDA consultant about a couple of nontraditional credits I gave my son. Then I bought the HSLDA diploma for his graduation party. That was just a gift f...

11th grade Optional Reading/DVD List
