Re: foreign language & catch up

We started RS last summer when my kids were entering 8th, 6th, 4th and 2nd grade. I was concerned about starting my daughter late, but she has made great progress and seems to have better retention than the youngers. I even think her accent sounds great, but what do I know--I don't speak Spanish. :-...

Re: Compare?

With your family size and the prospect of more little blessings running around, I would consider the long range planning and figure out how many different levels you would need to do. I would never give up the combining of 2nd-8th graders! !! It is a lifesaver and really helps with family bonds as w...

Re: Compare MFW?

Plenty of reading opportunities with MFW. The books just don't all come in your package, and you're not able to see a picture in the catalog of all of them. The book basket list will give you more then enough ideas, plus there is a general reading list in the back of the manuals-listed by grade leve...

... Just suggesting that you consider family size (and future family size) in your decision. I have accomplished so much more for all my kids with this curriculum than I ever thought possible, and I don't feel I've left anyone out.

Re: I need to settle down - advice?

I'm always feeling tense and stressed about getting things done. This is mostly because by about 2pm I crash and am DONE. By 2:00 I can easily fit in either school or housework, but not both. And this is with only 1 ds6 doing 1st gr. But I also have a newly 4yo who loves workbook stuff and likes to...

Re: chickening out on starting ECC this fall

We have done well with Adventures this year! I guess I'm raising my hand in cyberspace and saying, "I'm nervous, too, Fenni!" I also don't know how he will handle the stories about the missionaries that are tragic. The tragedies are downplayed for this age. My husband read the YWAM stories to the k...

Glad to know we're not the only ones struggling. I emailed about the tests too. They told me the tests should not be used in place of the ones in the book. They are for retesting. I thought it was to offer a different format, but I guess that is not the intended purpose. Not that they couldn't be us...

Carylee and Dawn, thank you so much for answering my post. Could you share with me what a day looks like at your house with the high school ancients? Do you feel like your kids will be well prepared for college? I will have two kids using this in the fall, do you have any suggestions about having t...

Re: feeling overwhelmed

I am not a high energy mom in the least, but I must say that I am glad we did the feasts. I would try to eliminate other extras if need be. If there are opportunities to do something outside the home with a Messianic Jewish organization, that would be great. We did ours at home and I had morning sic...

Re: kindergarten books

There are usually two alternate selections for your literature selection for the week. So you will have 2 or 3 choices. Your other reading time would come from any children's literature you prefer. Honey for a Child's Heart helps with those selections if you need ideas. I never had a problem securin...

Thanks Wendy for repeating your suggestions. Carylee, thanks for the heads up on the test. I emailed Apologia today to look into that. Also, it's good to hear first hand about the Biology course. Sounds like we should just follow the sequence. I guess that clears that point up. I'm assuming my daugh...

Re: God and the History of Art - for ages 10+?

We used the DVD's for use with I Can Do All Things and found they really enhanced the program. The kids enjoyed the instruction, and I could see a difference in their work. Plus, we were more likely to do it, if I didn't have to sit with them through the whole lesson. There aren't DVD's for GATHOA u...

Re: Help me choose!

If you decide to go with MFW 1st, you could add in an English book for your daughter for those early review lessons. You could do a few lessons in PLL, use something like Queen's Language Lessons,or just make up your own exercises. Since she is your oldest, you will have time because of her reading ...

math - finishing K

We are near the end of K and I am wanting to add some extra math work as suggested in the manual. I looked in the store, but couldn't find a workbook that looked like it was at their level. They know shapes, recognize patterns and differences, understand bigger/smaller, and can count to 100 by ones...

Re: 1st grade phonics

We used Sing Spell Read and Write with my 3 oldest. It was a very thorough program, but we were using MFW for the olders. So, it seemed natural to give MFW 1st a try. I would say that he reached the same level as he would have using SSRW without nearly as much busywork, a lot more bible content, and...

I'm wondering if it would help to get the dvd that goes with the program. She might think it's more exciting to watch someone teach the lesson and then try to copy it herself. When we need an encylopedia, I use the online Encarta that comes free with our MSN premium that is part of our Verizon internet service. But, we don't often use one. In MFWK we rarely used one, I used library books instead.

We did not do them as necklaces either. We hung them from our kitchen chandelier. When we do MFWK again, I might try to do them as a work ID badge as a clip instead of around the neck. We have 5 boys, and anything with a long rope or string just makes me nervous safety-wise. I think possibly the ori...

If you don't do K. I would recommend slowing down the pace and adding in some early phonics. My son did K, but still needed a little help, which we did on exploration days. You could also add in reading games. Marie has suggestions for those in the manual. We did 1st grade over 1 1/2 years. You coul...
