Re: What to do with 2nd grader next year?

Thank you so much!! I am encouraged. I'll keep going!! :-) I have to be reminded that her interest will come. It is true that I need to make sure I read with her by herself. She just told me this week that she really likes when I read to her by herself. I probably need to find more that interests he...

Re: Tips for First Grade?

I'm on my second round with 1st. On the first time, I had a dd who was reading above grade level. This time my dd is about average in her reading level, with some struggling days. I've tried to make sure that my dd watch Between the Lions or Super Why!! They both have helped her see words be built i...

Re: Overwhelemed:(

I'm in that situation right now. I have a 4th grader, 1st grader, a 4 yo and baby that was born in June. I too was overwhelmed at the thought and still am at times. I have considered switching too so that less of my time will be required. I always come back to the fact that if I switch, there will b...

Re: need ideas for a reluctant student

I was so in your shoes about 4 years ago, with children about the same ages too. I just want to chime in on what Lucy and Crystal said. I too had a very advanced reader, yet I was blessed to take the advice from this board about K. The phonics was really not needed, although I wish I would have done...

Re: MFW 1st day 36 and having problems

I'm wondering, do you feel it's going too fast or does your 6 year old say its going too fast? I also have a 1st grader. This is my second time with 1st grade, and my 2nd dd that I am teaching now is not as good at reading as my first. I have also had that feeling like the phonics is flying. I've al...

Re: Discpline during School Hours

Karla, I just want to encourage you. Right now you are establishing expectations for school behavior, which is probably expected the rest of the day also -- to OBEY mommy. This is new for everyone in your home, so it will take a little time. I think it is normal for them all to be trying you a littl...

Re: MFW K or MFW 1st and handwriting

With the Proverb, I break it up over three days. This does two things. It makes the handwriting more manageable and it helps me to remember to review the verse,
"reading" the verse together each day.

Good CD for CTG

Just wanted to pass along a good find at the library: Jewish Holiday Songs for Children by Rachel Buchman (with dances and games for all seasons) My children have really enjoyed this CD. Re: Two time lines?

Thanks for all of the ideas. I've decided for now to use the idea of using CTG's timeline figures for our main timeline. I will color them and put contact paper on them. These will be used where we school each day. For my dd in first, I am going to let her post her timeline by her bed. I gave my old...

I live in South Texas. I moved from the Southeast. We have not successfully made a nature journal yet. It's taken me a few years to mourn the beauty of the SE and begin to appreciate the beauty that God has made in this part of the country. I have finally begun to see the beautiful flowers that we h...

Re: End of year finale

The past couple of years we put together a "program" for dad. If I had family near by I think I would include them too -- especially grandparents. This year we finished ECC and K and have a tag along 3 year old. The kids get a "diploma" from the dollar store. The kids sang songs related to what we l...

We are in our first year of homeschooling using MFW K (LOVE IT!!) with our 5 year old son. We also have a 3 year old daughter (4 in August) who will not be left out :) , she "does" school with us and knows the character verses as well as her brother. My kids aren't the biggest science kids naturally but they have enjoyed the science. It's been just enough and if they are really interested in a topic, we spend a little more time or read more books. Just to add a little encouragement. In my psychology classes in college I remember learning a littl...

We also have used the math sense blocks in the same way.

Re: Am I going too fast?

You know I was just thinking about this the other day. My oldest dd learned to read very early so we did K kind of like you are doing now. I skipped all of the worksheets and only did the activities and we read on the side. Now that I am going through with my second dd, who needed all of the reading...

I have a perfectionist too. My dd6 gets really upset if she doesn't know something or can'...

Re: Weeks 23-24 India

I found the game Parchisi at my grocery store on sale. It is an Indian game, very similar to Sorry, but with many more interesting rules. The one I bought had Indian animals as the pawns. My kids really liked that part. We also enjoyed watching the Jungle Book . I never realized it was based in Indi...
