Re: wondering if 1st is right fit

Hi Cheryl! I am in a similar situation to you. We journeyed through Adventures last year during 2nd and K for my children. My K'er did everything in Adv. that my older child did and enjoyed it! She is reading and writing at a higher level now than her dyslexic, dysgraphic older brother, but he is ma...

Re: Weeks 3-4 United States

Thanks Crystal for sharing how you simplified Global Art projects! We had fun making our quilts out of cardstock and scrapbook paper. I let the kids use my scrapbook shape punches to "cut" out each block and they got creative and used other shapes and glued them onto a 16 square template of 2x2 squa...

Re: ECC, sooo excited

Wow! Cool! Our homeschool association went on a field trip to see the King Tut exhibit at the Children's Museum in Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago and then someone had a friend of theirs come speak to us yesterday and show us her slide show of a trip she took to Egypt! Now my kids are figuring ou...

Re: HELP!!! My son is bored!!

Hi Leah! I'm thinking here...hmmm... Let's see. First, my son always says he is bored or doesn't want to do things or doesn't like school, etc. His attitude is negative, partly because he has some learning disabilities that make some of it hard for him, but mostly because he would rather play all da...

Re: Handwriting question?

Hi! We have been working on my son's pencil grip for the last few years and last year in 2nd grade, we finally got him into occupational therapy. What actually worked for him was a pencil weight. It's something that is placed around the pencil about 3/4 of the way toward the eraser and it helps it t...

Re: Record keeping with Adventures

Hello! We really enjoyed Adventures last year and are into ECC now. I wrote all over our TM last year, checking off boxes, adding things at the bottom or on blank spaces in the grids for my children, etc. It worked great because I had all the planning in one place and could even grab my TM and go to...

Re: ECC week 2 Worms-Ewwww!!

Ok, it looks like our poor worms didn't make it over the weekend either. We followed the instructions and screwed the lid back onto the peanut butter jar that we had everything in. Maybe they needed a little air?? I'm not sure if I should try it again?

Re: Teaching two kids at once....

Hi Leah! You can do it, yes you can! (Trying to cheer you on!) I remember teaching 1st and K a couple of years ago. It was overwhelming at first because instead of having one great program (like the year before when we just did K) there were two and I felt like I needed to do as much of everything a...

My ds has never really liked school. I try to do fun things and he still complains and I told him that there is no complaining allowed this year!! But we are still working on that. Anyway, my dd is completely different. She was disappointed last week when we decided to wait one more day because my d...

Re: ECC Student Sheets Question

Hi! I got a simple file box with a handle that I can carry around and put together just a few files in it, including one for each set of student sheets for ECC (we have 2 sets, too). There is room in it for my TM's and map and a couple of other files. I don't know why I didn't do this before! Last y...

Re: ECC week 2 Worms-Ewwww!!

Do you have any kind of a mulch bed? We have certain spots in our mulch beds that are more shaded and stay more moist where we can almost always dig a few inches under the mulch, into the topsoil, and find earthworms. I tried a couple of other places in the mulchbeds yesterday and couldn't find any ...

You gals are funny! ;) I don't plan on selling my TM either, that is why I wondered how to use it twice! I used planners before last year in Adv. but writing in the TM saved time! I liked having the grid pre-made for me. Edie, I like your idea of whiting out the things that you won't need to do the ...

Re: Thinking of coming back to MFW

Hi Kathy! We just completed Adventures in May and really enjoyed that year. It awakened an appreciation and excitement about history in my children. We have also used MFW K and 1st gr. My ds is going to be a third grader this year, too. We used most of the recommendations from MFW, including PLL for...

Hi! You have already received so much great advice! I wanted to say that calling the MFW office would be very helpful! I called them a week or 2 ago when I panicked and went away from my conversation feeling encouraged! My situation is different (I don't have a baby and I only have 2 children) but I...

Re: dyslexia at what age?

Jessica, Hi! MFW Kindergarten will be fun for your eager student! I would not be alarmed at this point about reversals. I am not a dyslexia expert, but since my ds (8 yr old) was diagnosed a few months ago and I also have a 6 yr old, I can tell you that they have learned very differently. My dd, the...

Thanks Crystal for the encouragement! Why do I do this about my firstborn, because I am a firstborn?! Aaagh! Re: ADHD, possibly HF autistic son and ECC

Sounds like some good ideas! I also tried to do almost all of our schoolwork in one room early on and then last year I created a schedule that had us doing different subjects in different parts of the house. This helped both me and my ds a lot. We also use a pillow from the couch on his chair when h...

Hi Annie! You are ahead of me because I don't have my ECC TM, yet. However, I panicked last week about ECC and actually called MFW for the first time! Re: Pronunciation in K

I think that is a great idea! I didn't think of that when doing K, but I just try to enunciate /a/ very clearly and very much the same in "cat" and "man", which is a little different than how I would speak the work "man" or other words with an "an"!

Re: Kindergarten questions

When we did Kindergarten I used a plastic accordian file with almost enough dividers in it for each unit (I doubled a few). I put the loose pages in it organized by unit and then had a place to file any other ideas, coloring sheets, or other info. about each unit. I waited until the end of the year ...
