Re: child getting totally distracted?

Hi! It sounds like you had a better day. I have been a Christian for a long time and I still messed up and yelled at my son today - and it wasn't because he was hormonal - that was ME! It's just hard some days when you are in the middle of it all! I am thankful for Ash Wednesday today to remind me t...

Re: Does anyone use any "extras?"

Hi! Yes, we have added in some things. We have used Visual Perceptual Skills and Mindbenders books from Critical Thinking Co. We do math games and drills and have a variety of those. We have also found success with using Handwriting Without Tears for handwriting instruction and practice. We also hav...

Re: CtG week 24 David & Bathsheba

Crystal, you always make me laugh!! We talked about it this morning and it went well. You can just say David was trying to cover up his own sin and hurt everyone that way. Yes, that is what I said and that made sense to them. I will definitely tell my husband about it all later so that he can talk a...

Re: CtG week 24 David & Bathsheba

Ah, yes, of course we have already talked about the 10 commandments and how God designed marriage for Adam and Eve to be one man and one woman. I think what makes it a little more complicated is that some of these great heroes of the past did have multiple wives. Thanks for the good suggestions on r...

Re: Struggling with mythology......

Hello! We are just wrapping up Week 21 of CtG today, so we are probably near the same point as you and Irmi! We finally just finished reading the Patricia St. John book, Treasures of the Snow . It was a beautiful book and out of the three we have read written by her, this has been our favorite! We g...

Re: How do you get your kids involved...

So do you think calling places and arranging for tours would be weird with only 2 kids one only being pre-s/K level? My 5 yr old is into firemen and firehouses and my sister has a friend who works for 911 in the city and she arranged a day back in Dec to tour the firehouse. Of course all my resourc...

Re: Looking ahead to CTG

I felt that ECC took more time than ADV, so I am thinking you might feel a "jump" in the amount of what is listed on the grid each day as you move from ADV to CtG. I have loved different parts of each year! ECC had a lot of variety about different cultures and people around the world, but I was taki...

Foreign Language plan?

It's time to spend the money on Rosetta Stone! I am so excited to finally start this. :-) But I'm torn on which to begin with and would love some planning help. My thoughts are Spanish or Latin to begin with. RS might not be the best option for Latin. FWIW - the reason I chose Latin and Spanish is ...

Re: When to know when MFW isnt for you?

I just have to jump in here and say that some other ladies have made some very good points. In the end, is the curriculum helping you meet the goals you have for your family? Is it helping you train and disciple your children? Does it help you meet your academic goals? These are the questions I woul...

Re: Not really liking Writing Strand

Hi! I am just checking on here on the board after being away for a little while. Another thing to think about is the use of typing in written work. We practice handwriting each day with copywork, but for most other work where we are working on spelling or the whole process of writing and editing we ...

Encouragement - Our first year and getting behind

Hello all, We are doing MFW K. I am new to HSing and my DS is my only child (for now). We are enjoying the program very much and overall it has been going well. I feel that the phonics are right on for my son and I love that the program is integrated, well rounded, and has helped me feel like I rea...

Hello! I just found this thread because I am thinking about what my 8 yo daughter could read after our holiday break. She received the AG doll Felicity for her December birthday, along with the movie and some other items. She has some other AG dolls and really enjoys them, but this is her first hist...

Re: 1st/2nd Spelling etc

Hello! I am replying about the spelling questions. I have a "natural" speller/reader currently in 2nd grade. After working with her older dyslexic brother, I pondered over how to handle spelling with her because I knew it would be totally different. When I looked through Spelling by Sound & Structur...

Re: CTG - Week 15 (including the Tabernacle)

I am thankful for MFW and how Marie plans our lessons to make large projects more "do-able" by spreading the work over several days. This Tabernacle seemed daunting to me when I looked at all of the written directions in the TM. However, the student sheets made it very easy and the step-by-step dire...

How does this work (placement) ?

My dd1 (she will be 7.5ish) beginning Adventures in Fall 2011. I would have my then 4 years and 5months old dd2 begin MFW K. She is 3.5ish now and is reading and spelling simple words at this time. I do not do anything formal with her, it is a result of DD1 playing school with her. I actually bough...

Hi "gratitude! I wanted to share my perspective. This is our 5th year using MFW and we have been working through CtG since August, so we are now ready to start Week 14. I think we have the same edition that Crystal was talking about and we use Streams of Civilization and Victor's Journey Through the...

Well, I'm just catching up here on the message board and coming in on this thread a little late, but I thought that I would agree with this idea from Trish. I think for this particular situation, getting a HWT book for her dd to do handwriting practice in until writing is more automatic and doing En...

We also made some cool clay pots and they are pictured as well. Here ...

I also have pictures on this post of our Books of the Old Testament on index cards and an art project. We have added Artisti...

Re: CTG - Weeks 8 & 9

Hi! We made a lentil stew and did some fun science experiments. We did not get the "Karate Kid" experiment to work well, but for the "egg cup" experiment we used a tea light candle and did not attach it to the pie plate. It rose with the water level and was so fun to watch that we did it a few times...

Re: A MFW Grade 1 Moment...

That is really sweet!!

My daughter used her own tiny Gideon's Bible the other day and highlighted Psalm 23 on her own! She said that she went to the index and found the word "lonely" and then found the Psalm. Then she decided to highlight it because she liked it!
