The books we used for A-a-Apple were:

Johnny Appleseed (Early Biographies) - Gini Holland *This was the best of the Johnny Appleseed books we read. It really addresses his Christian faith and tries to find the truth amidst the tall tales. Excellent.
The Story of Johnny Appleseed - Aliki
Jonny Appleseed, My Story - David Lee Harrison *Cute illustrations, DD enjoyed it a lot
Mr. Peabody's Apples - Madonna *I got a little skittish when I read the note inside that this had some Kabbalah ties but it's really a nice story that talks about the power of words.
What is Fruit? - Chris Arvetis *Just Ask is always an excellent series
How to make an Apple Pie and See the World - Marjorie Priceman
One Red Apple - Harriet Zeifert
Little Apple Goat - Carlone Church
Out and About at the Apple Orchard - Diane Mayr
Apples - Ken Robbins
Apples - Gail Gibbons
Apple Farmer Annie - Wellington
10 Apples Up on Top - Theo LeSieg
Albert's Field Trip - Leslie Tryon
Grasshopper on the Road - Arnold Lobel
Up, Up, Up, It's Apple Picking Time - Jody Fickes Shapiro

Mister Roger's Neighborhood on amazon on demand (free with amazon prime or $1.99 per episode)

Season 1997, Ep. 3 "#1713 - Sharing - How People Make Apple Juice"
"Mister Rogers shows an apple and video of how people make apple juice in a factory. He helps children know that it's not just "things" that people share, we can also share something we know with someone else. Teachers do that all the time."

Season 1984, Ep. 6 "#1536 - Food - How People Make Apple Sauce"
"Mister Rogers visits a factory to show how people make apple sauce and shows a video of how animals and babies drink milk from their mothers. In Make-Believe, X the Owl receives some "speedy seeds" and expects them to grow right away."
***My own personal note ***FYI - A baby is shown nursing & latching on. Twice the mother's nipple is clearly visible.

I'm happy to say that we are going to be visiting an apple orchard with our Co-Op the very week we are scheduled to to Aa Apple! how is THAT for timing! I think visiting an orchard is a great way to really sink in the process of growing apples and bearing fruit.

Here's a cute variation on the hand tree: http://craftproverbs31life.blogspot.com ... eaves.html

You could probably shape the TP tubes into apple shapes, or use a small apple even, to stamp apples onto the tree :)Image

Here's a link to Disney's 1948 cartoon about Johnny Appleseed. It contains the song from Day 1 of this unit.
This is Part 1 of 2. You'll see Part 2 of 2 on the page where this is viewed. I'm sure the historical details aren't exactly accurate, but it's innocent and fun to watch. :0)

For short vowel sound A, we read Cat in the Hat by Dr.Suess, and I wrote all the words with short a vowel sound in them on chalkboard, as we read. Then, we sang short vowel a song using all of the words. "I hear a in cat and hat, Sally and sat, have and that..."

The Go Fish Guys have a great song called "Fruit of the Spirit" that goes well with this theme. You can find it on YouTube and iTunes.
