Read-Alouds - The Children's Homer pronunciation help !
Now that we are finally getting into this book I just can't stand not knowing how to say some of these names!
I mean, Achilles, Odysseus, Priam, and any other names in The Trojan Horse (or names I recognize) I can handle (there is a pronunciation guide to THAT little book--but not this one!).
Please, tell me that someone somewhere has a pronunciation guide for this book!
Thank you!

Children's Homer
Hi! I had the same issue this year while reading that book, so I asked our library if they had it on CD... and they did! We listened to it and it was much more enjoyable and easier to understand as it was beautifully read instead of being read by me stumbling all over the words! Just an idea...
God bless!

Hi Winni,
I looked up some words in the dictionary and some on line to find out how to pronounce them. The ones I couldn't find I just did my best with. The children didn't realize any different.

Hey, I can't even pronounce the author's first name: Padraic! It's not phonetic at all. I heard it once and said, "no way, that can't be right."
A neat appendix to future MFW TMs would be a pronunciation key. Of course, that's if time allows. I know the staff is busy with high school curricula and also in revisions here and there.
Anyway, if someone knows of a good online resource, let us know!
I must admit I created a few pronunciations. But, they were on minor characters. I'm pretty sure I got the major characters right.
We actually liked the book! I know not everyone likes it. I let the kids doodle on paper, fiddle with geo-mags, etc. while I read.

I always thought that if the names were not that well known that I didn't already know how to say them, or find it in a dictionary then whatever I came up with would be good enough. Sometimes I might ask a friend who might have a clue if they knew any of it. And I've been impressed that the librarians in my town seem to know some of this stuff.
You'll be fine Tracey :)

Excellent resource links!! Where were you a month ago when I was blundering through Homer? ^_^ But did you notice that even those 2 sources pronounce some of the names differently?? In one, Aias is "eye-us" and in the other it's "Ay-us". So I don't think we should feel too badly if we aren't sure about our pronunciations. Even the experts don't seem to agree! :)
